Todd Rundgren: ‘Parallel Lines’

Music • Views: 6,630

A great performance of one of my favorite Todd Rundgren songs, “Parallel Lines,” recorded on David Sanborn’s short-lived TV show “Night Music” in 1989. Todd sings his heart out here.

This version is substantially different than the one on the excellent album Nearly Human, which is out of print but still available at Amazon’s MP3 store.

Kindred spirits moving along the spiral
I can see you up on another level
It’s too great a fall
And I can’t reach you to pull me higher
But I don’t seem to get much closer or any more far

What would you tell me, if I could hear you speaking?
If you could touch me, how would I know the feeling?
I just can’t imagine
But I try to do it anyway
I wish I was moving faster, I wish you’d drift back
But it just wasn’t meant to happen
Very soon I’ll have to

Face the fact
Some things never come together
Parallel lines running on forever
And you can’t turn back
There is never any starting over
Parallel lines never do cross over

It’s a challenge
Gotta make myself remember
Facing the truth, well, that doesn’t mean surrender
What is bravado and how much is a force of will?
I know that the world is full of opposites that attract
But unless we ignore the physics
Very soon we’ll have to

Face the fact
Some things never come together
Parallel lines running on forever
And you can’t turn back
There is never any starting over
Parallel lines never do cross over

So I send you the gift of empathy
If you’d once in your life acknowledge me
I have visualized so thoroughly
That when I think of me I think of we

Can’t face the truth
It means that we must surrender
Understanding won’t satisfy the hunger
It whittles away at the destiny we fulfill
And like an animal running wild
You can’t call it back
And it’s just gonna make it harder
When it’s finally time to

Face the fact
Some things never come together
Parallel lines running on forever
And you can’t turn back
There is never any starting over
Parallel lines never do cross over

I always thought Todd was just one of the smarter writer/performers out there. Always sharp and deep.

US releases ‘dangerous’ Iranian proxy behind the murder of US troops

The US has released the leader of an Iranian-backed Shia terror group behind the kidnapping and murder of five US soldiers in Karbala in January 2007.

Qais Qazali, the leader of the Asaib al Haq or the League of the Righteous, was set free by the US military and transferred to Iraqi custody in exchange for the release of British hostage Peter Moore, US military officers and intelligence officials told The Long War Journal. The US military directly implicated Qais in the kidnapping and murder of five US soldiers in Karbala in January 2007.

“We let a very dangerous man go, a man whose hands are stained with US and Iraqi blood,” a military officer said. “We are going to pay for this in the future.”

The US military has maintained that the release of members and leaders of the League of the Righteous is related to a reconciliation agreement between the terror group and the Iraqi government, but some US military officers disagree.

“The official line is the release of Qazali is about reconciliation, but in reality this was a prisoner swap,” a military intelligence official said.

Could've made *much* more chart noise than he did, but instead he kept pushing himself artistically.

Hears wishing all a very Happy New Year. I hope that 2010 will be much better for all than 2009 was.
One thing, Please remember to post 2010 as the year date on all your checks. Do not have them bounce for the "Stale Date" reason. It is embarrassing to say the least. I know since I did that many years ago.

One of the best concerts I ever went to was a three day blues festival in Davenport Iowa in the 80s. Picture it: a beered-up crowd in the park, under the stars, beside the Mississippi River, gettin' down to John Lee Hooker.

n addition to his own recordings, Rundgren has produced albums for Halfnelson (first incarnation of Sparks), New York Dolls, Badfinger, Grand Funk Railroad, Hall & Oates, Ian and Sylvia (on their "Great Speckled Bird" album), Meat Loaf, Patti Smith, Shaun Cassidy, The Tubes, Tom Robinson Band, XTC, Bad Religion, Cheap Trick, The Hello People, Hiroshi Takano, Bourgeois Tagg, 12 Rods, The Pursuit of Happiness, The Psychedelic Furs, Steve Hillage, The Band, The American Dream, and many others.

I was 16 at the time of that gig...it took several years to sink in...that's the way life is, it takes time to appreciate things...at the time it's just another thing, then years later it hits you what you did and saw and experienced...but as time went by I matured and got a feel for the moment, you know?
