I missed that cemetery story yesterday.

The community's burial site was approved in 2005 by the town's code enforcement official Dale R. Downin, Hass said. Hass provided CNN with a copy of the approval letter, dated December 6, 2005, which simply states that Downin has "inspected" the proposed property and that "a cemetery at this location would be allowed use according to the Town of Sidney Zoning Ordinance." Phone calls to Downin to confirm its authenticity have not yet been returned.

Eh. I question the "100s of millions". There are a lot of different kinds of bands. Lot of different uses for them. I would like to see a few more buglers. For young musicians, sometimes the military is their only chance to gain the skills they need.

re: #48 Stanley Sea
Ok, I read it, really read it. The jerk used the old "equivalent of" pay comparison and counted their paychecks as the cost of the bands. Look, all Soldiers are Soldiers first. They still train on weapons, still deploy. Unless you are in one of the elite bands (which you don't get in as soon as you join the Army) you are deploying, training, doing details etc. like everyone else. Until recetnly, the bands wartime mission was to cover down as prison guards so the MPs could run combat missions. That has changed only recently because we have more MOS trained prison guards and the problems at Abu Graab caused people to feel a little insecure about untrained guards in the prisons. So, that figure is the cost of Soldiers, not just "band." Oh, and "the equivalent of" including COMMISSARY priveledges? Is he freaking kidding? Look, I'm a staff sergeant. I am NOT making more than a foreing service worker. You don't join the Army as a Staff Sergeant. You work you way up. That is not starting pay as he implies. Moreover, those elite bands require you to try out against the best of the best. So comparing their salaries to other band members is not only unfair, it's impossible. Those guys are talented entertainers, not high school hoofers. Also, its easy to complain about the military band when you use them to entertain at the White House and other state occasions. A convenient way to transfer your costs to our budget. The article is at best disingenuous.
All of that said, it would not hurt my feelings if they got rid of almost all military bands. The rank and file in the military benefit very little if at all. A few change of command ceremonies a year and an occasional Christmas show don't really warrant a full time band. But that is never going to happen.

But here's another perspective on military bands -- some of America's greatest musicians gained invaluable experience and knowledge playing in military bands. One of history's greatest drummers, Steve Gadd, for example.

For young musicians, sometimes the military is their only chance to gain the skills they need.

There's plenty of waste in the military, but as a musician (who worked with Steve Gadd and many other musicians who went the military band route), I think people should direct their attention elsewhere.

How much is one Steve Gadd worth?

I actually do not suggest slashing that budget.

I do find it funny that people who normally worry fretfully about government spending for things I find very needful seem just fine with this.

re: #83 Escaped Hillbilly

No the color guard is a tasking. However, when you have an actual bugler and not some electronic or recorded atrocity, he is a detailed member of the band (usually).

111 Our Precious Bodily Fluids  Wed, Sep 29, 2010 6:45:06pm

It's a bit surreal to see the USMC marching band play swing jazz numbers while they stand there all disciplined and stiff as a frickin' board. Always technically flawless performances, but they don't exactly have a Jimi Hendrix-like stage presence, if you know what I mean.

It's simple really, there really is no such thing as a pure big government liberal or small government conservative. 99% of people are in between somehow. Differing degrees of course but I see self described small government conservatives who propose as a solution to illegal immigration building a gignatic fence. Do they think that won't cost money? Ditto with cracking down on illegal immigration. It's like when people bitch about the quality of the roads, schools, etc and then it's pointed out hey you're going to have to pax for that with higher taxes they flip.

The rapid increase in deaths of the WWII generation overstressed the ability to provide buglers, hence the putrid plastic trumpets. In some locations the American Legion and similar organizations filled in. (As much as I despise their union-busting predecessors.)

Reminds me of our last deployment. We were at a big airfield, very safe, lot of extra people around and a real giant chowhall. The band no longer had much of a job but had to be put to use. Can't have people hanging out just enjoying their time off you know. So they made them play in the chow hall. Arrrrggghh. Horrible. Terrible accoustics and people are trying to talk and food and trays being slung around and terrible jazz playing way too loud in the middle of the room. No Cujo for you!

Stephen King said a few years ago that after he sobered up and got off coke, he realized that Cujo was about his addictions, and that he had no idea that was the case while he was writing it. Read through that filter, it's very different book. Same with "The Shining", though that one's quite a bit more obvious.

Of a couple of his other books written around that same time, he said something along the lines of, "those novels were well-received and they are some of my better work. I just wish I could remember writing them."

Not sure, although with Naked Lunch it's reeeeeally hard to miss, what with lines like:

Ever see a hot shot hit, kid? I saw the Gimp catch one in Philly. We rigged his room with a one-way whorehouse mirror and charged a sawski to watch it. He never got the needle out of his arm. They don't if the shot is right. That's the way they find them, dropper full of clotted blood hanging out of a blue arm. The look in his eyes when it hit --- Kid, it was tasty.

David Cronenberg's film adaptation of Naked Lunch is also a must-see.

CNN accuses James O’Keefe of bizarre prank

What I can’t quite grasp is how, if he and his team really did intend to follow the script and film Boudreau on the boat with sex toys scattered around, that they could have conceivably released the resulting video and thought people would like it. That may be their best defense, actually — that no one seriously could have thought this was a good idea and that the script was just a raunchy joke being circulated among the team, never meant to be implemented. (The other defense, presumably, will be that the colleague who tipped off Boudreau is lying.) Anyway, now you’re up to speed. We’ll hear O’Keefe’s side of it soon enough, I’m sure

It's pretty simple and O'Keefe and Brietbart have done this before. All they needed to do was to get her on the boat with the dildos and condom jar. Anything she said or did after that could be edited in a way to make her looks like a whore and the wingnuts would have rejoiced without question.

Addicted to Hate: the Fred Phelps Story

I don't know how accurate it is, but it's damned sure disturbing.

Here's a 1-hour BBC documentary by Louis Theroux, who spent several days living with the Phelps family to try to see what they were like from the inside. The answer: damn weird. Then you learn about the kids, and your heart breaks.

That doesn't work on any werewolves except Christian ones. With my luck, I'd get a Shinto werewolf.

I'm sorry you feel that way. Just so we're clear, I don't feel that way about Diane Feinstein, or Hillary Clinton, or Michelle Obama. It's only Boxer, and its based on what I know about her personality, not her ideology.

I still think there is a way you can spread second hand information without being an ugly misogynist. I am a linguist by trade, and one of the things we learn in my field is that people frequently judge you by the language you use.

How so? Boxer isn't just liberal, she's plain nasty. I base that not just off her public persona, but off the observations of a friend who interned for a Senator and had a chance to observe her when the cameras are off.

I can't say whether she's a bitch or has rabies, but I can say that I think she has some of the most poorly-informed and just plain dumb opinions about gun control to be found anywhere in the Senate.

He is what he is. Brookly. He prefers to be harsh and direct as a means of confronting people with what he feels are their misdeeds. Hence the "goddamnfrank" nic. I was that way myself, before I went into sales. Given my career path, I've had to learn how to shade my opinions and sometimes simply go along to get along. GDF chooses not to play that game.

In that, I am lucky. She would have clubbed me for that, and she may still do so. The post isn't going away, after all.

OT but man am I beat. Just sent out 18-20 emails since i am doing a story here on campus involving athletes and music. Felt weird emailing a bunch of people I don't know and only two of them I've ever met since I included two of the girls from the volleyball team which is my beat.

oh hell yeah even with all the copying and pasting. I mean this is an itneresting gig but it feels weird emailing people privately. Big step up form actually talking face to face. The good thing though is the responses will be electronic and I won't have to take handwritten notes and have to rely on my handwriting but it's tiring work.

We had a bugler for taps at my grandpa's funeral. Very nice.

We had taps and a twenty-one gun salute at my Dad's funeral. He served during the Korean War and WWII in the Air Force. I sobbed like a baby and I heard a woman wailing at a different service. Nothing will make you break down like the 21 gun salute.

bratwurst is the linguist, I'm just the guy calling "if it sounded that way and offended" a conditional bullshit non-apology, and identifying D_F's well worn pattern of weak sauce and walk backs as being deliberate and inexcusable.

I can't watch it at all, because I knew the dog was doomed as soon as I saw the previews.

I can't watch shit where the dog dies.

I saw they are remaking "A Boy and His Dog". You should like that movie, the dog doesn't die.

Bag pipes.

Heretic. Cutting bag pipe using bands. :p

I've seen the Black Watch regimental band twice. (And once was before the UK armed forces cut back enough that it became a combined regimental band.)

Load up on silver alloy ammo. .308 is better than .223 for taking on Werewolves. An FAL is your friend.

/Yes, this is now the Gun Thread.

Shotgun. Dragonsbreath rounds. Works great on both.

I've heard good things about the Vincent Price version. I should put that on my list.

You can find it on Hulu. Watched it about a month ago. Not bad.
