Am I the only person in America that’s pro-TSA and pro-Wiki-leaks?
2 | Kronocide Sun, Nov 28, 2010 1:49:36pm |
I’d like to start a WAR ON SHOPPING. But I have to run to Office Max and get a printer cartridge. The War will have to wait until I get back.

Next thing you’ll be telling me that people still send paper Christmas cards.

I’ll take a Devil’s Advocate stab at it (although I disagree with this position):
Never, ever, write anything you don’t want to see in the newspaper. If your communication security is that bad, it deserves to get published.

re: #6 marjoriemoon
My understanding is that most of the critical stuff that would endanger troops has been redacted from the wiki-leaks releases. As long as that is that case, I agree with this column:
[Link: www.guardian.co.uk…]
The content of the leaks makes it clear to me that the diplomatic community is in dire need of a bit more sunlight and transparency.

I’m late to the Wikileaks discussions. Don’t really know what to think. Read a bit about them this afternoon. From their Wikipedia page:
WikiLeaks states that its “primary interest is in exposing oppressive regimes in Asia, the former Soviet bloc, Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East
When Wikileaks was fucking with China I didn’t seem to mind them so much…

re: #16 Palmer_Eldritch
So let all our government and military info out on the table then? Maybe they should take out a front page ad in the NYT every day just to let everyone know what they’re doing?
I do agree that it’s a lot easier to divulge classified info today than before. That doesn’t mean it should be done or be legal to do. And I’m for open democracy and transparency, particularly with domestic policy. Foreign policy is a whole other issue.
OTOH, what was leaked today isn’t so horrifying or shocking. Maybe a couple things maybe. The Afghan foreign minister (was it?) shuttling out millions to the UAE? But it looks more like a whole to do about nothing which will be forgotten about in short order - at least by the masses.

re: #26 Obdicut
Ellipsis is a mark or series of marks that usually indicate an intentional omission of a word in the original text. An ellipsis can also be used to indicate a pause in speech, an unfinished thought, or, at the end of a sentence, a trailing off into silence. When placed at the end of a sentence, the ellipsis can also inspire a feeling of melancholy longing. The ellipsis calls for a slight pause in speech.
Wha’srong with ‘em? I kind of like them. I am full of unfinished thoughts.
33 | Obdicut Sun, Nov 28, 2010 2:37:56pm |
re: #32 Fat Bastard Vegetarian
They’re normally (not saying by you) used as a cop out, to either not say something that’s offensive, or to not say something because there’s no actual support for it.
That’s the usage that bugs me. As above.

re: #23 marjoriemoon
Really?? That’s like the best part for me.
I don’t mind most of the songs… in moderation. It’s the incessant exposure at practically all venues from Nov 20 (or earlier) for over a month that gets me irritated. And then pile to stupid over the top commercial hackery versions on top of that.

re: #20 Palmer_Eldritch
In this case diplomatic secrecy was likely enabling torture at the worst, and perpetuating counterproductive factionalism at best…
In many other cases diplomatic secrecy engenders trust with other parties, enables more open lines of communication, protects other tidbits of information. But what Wikileaks had done is throw the baby out with the bathwater.
And for the record, Wikilinks think they have redacted names and places to protect soldiers or assets. Though they are not in a position to understand inferences that can be made by players in theater. So to say that the redactions are complete and nobody was harmed at this point is too soon to tell. ‘Nobody’s been killed or harmed’ is not a defense because it still may happen, only time will tell.

re: #22 marjoriemoon
“So let all our government and military info out on the table then? Maybe they should take out a front page ad in the NYT every day just to let everyone know what they’re doing?”
That’s a straw man. Nobody is suggesting placing ALL OUR GOVERNMENT AND MILITARY INFO on the table.
Sorry, for the vagueness. The ‘in this case’ refers to revelations about the CIA’s extra-lawful meddling which is one of the big reveals in the current leak. From the NYT:
“Clashes with Europe over human rights: American officials sharply warned Germany in 2007 not to enforce arrest warrants for Central Intelligence Agency officers involved in a bungled operation in which an innocent German citizen with the same name as a suspected militant was mistakenly kidnapped and held for months in Afghanistan. A senior American diplomat told a German official “that our intention was not to threaten Germany, but rather to urge that the German government weigh carefully at every step of the way the implications for relations with the U.S.” “

I don’t know what they have to say,
It makes no difference anyway —
Whatever it is, I’m against it!
No matter what it is or who commenced it,
I’m against it.
Your proposition may be good
But let’s have one thing understood —
Whatever it is, I’m against it!
And even when you’ve changed it or condensed it,
I’m against it.
I’m opposed to it —
On general principles I’m opposed to it!
Chorus: He’s opposed to it!
In fact, in word, in deed,
He’s opposed to it!
For months before my son was born,
I used to yell from night till morn,
Whatever it is, I’m against it!
And I’ve kept yelling since I commenced it,
I’m against it!

I seriously think that they are the worst thing to have happened to the Muslim world since the Mongol invasion in 1258 that destroyed Baghdad in 1258. Their repulsive form of Islam (Wahhabism) has caused tremendous pain, and they have, and are destroying many sites that are associated with Islam’s history because they see it as idolatrous. Moreover, because of their money, they are able to spread their trash across the planet. That form of Islam give the rest of us a bad name. It makes me more than livid. Because of them, the Muslim world is now in the sorriest state since the Muhammed was forced to flee to Medina over 1300 years ago. I hate the Saudi family and their government. Because of them, other, more moderate forms of Islam are pushed to the margins, because they don’t have the resources to advocate for themselves as much. The Saudis are a disgrace to Islam.

99.9937% of ‘Christmas music’ wretched, anyway. Any time I hear a song that includes the sound of sleigh bells, or which mentions sleigh bells in the lyrics, I begin to think about spending all my Christmas budget on accelerants.
Generally, if it’s a song that might conceivably be inflicted by roving bands of eggnog-besotted “carolers” in love with (but infuriatingly oblivious to) the sound of their own voice, then the song is crap.
And of the small handful of Christmas-associated music I do actually like ( most of which was composed by Russian, German, and Ukranian composers who, mercifully for them, died long before the scourge of piped-in Muzak and 24-hour music radio stations), there’s not a single one I’d enjoy hearing 32,767 times per day, every day, from November 1 to December 25.

re: #85 ProLifeLiberal
And they’re rather barbaric too. One of the only countries in the world that executes people for non-homicide crimes, including acts which aren’t even criminal in most of the world, such as homosexuality, adultery and prostitution.
Oh, yeah, and they treat women like unclean chattel who walk around in death shrouds.
But FDR made an agreement with them back in the early 40s. As long as the oil keeps flowing we will “protect” them, which includes looking the other way as they violate the most basic of human rights. Hasn’t changed much.

Kickers always get a bum rap…… draft a good one early in the draft and you’re mocked…… Ray not in the HOF? Not right.
However……. good kickers are hard to come by and can dramatically change a game whether it’s a last minute 54 yard FG for the win, or a strategically placed punt that changes the “juju”.

I’ve seen it. I just can’t get past how sadistic/masochistic her character was. The cigarette burning scene was especially painful. But it’s a great movie—sort of prescient about video and media—if you’re into the genre, which I am (almost as much as my wife). Cronenberg, Scanners, exploding heads—enough said. Cronenberg is one of my favorites. You’re lucky to have a wife that tolerates - let alone enjoys - Cronenberg films.
For now, anyway.
My ex was seeming a fan of weird sci-fi and Mario Bava / Lucio Fulci / Dario Argento horror films, THEN SUDDENLY it was Lighthearted Romantic Comedy Theater, all the time. Her idea of a must-see flick became something wherein Renee Zellweger cries a lot, or in which Kate Winslet plays a perky magazine editor.

the UK has 2,000,000 unemployed but only 500,000 full time permanent vacancies.
If someone takes a part time or temporary vacancy they lose their unemployment benefit (which is fine) - but they can not claim again for 6 months.
I’m in the position that if i take a two month contract over 16hrs a week at the end of it I would have to walk straight into another job or have no guaranteed income at all for atleast 4 months.

My wife and I find movies like Suspiria and the Italian zombie flicks to be very disturbing. But we love watching them anyway. Same thing that makes rollercoasters fun: sort of a thrill ride. Weird thing about my wife is she also loves the chick flicks you’re talking about. She’s got all the Jane Austen adapations on DVD, as well as lots of films by directors like Cronenberg, DePalma and John Carpenter.

It’s an almost impossible position in this climate particularly so close to christmas when most vacancies are seasonal and only for two or three months, there are then a mess more unemployed people after christmas and even fewer jobs in the economy.
They want to make work pay and get people off benefits - which is fine - but the economy and current rules are insane on that. It’s like you’re being punished for taking something (anything) that gets you off the benefits roll for a few months (which they should applaud). They are geared up to want people to find permanent employment - but there isn’t any.
Falling into the gap between work and employment just forces people into the black economy to survive.
catch 22.

Heh. Maybe. I honestly have no idea. I’d gone into it expecting to like it, and I just…didn’t. I reacted viscerally to it, hating every frame. I’m still not sure why.
I mean, at the time, I’d just started playing EverQuest and was thinking about all the virtual reality stuff, and about where the game ended and real life began, because I was seeing those same issues with people that I knew in the game. eXistenZ should have been something that I liked just for that reason alone, but it just feels like Cronenberg’s weakest film overall, and like it was something he tossed out while waiting for a real idea to come along.

You might be able to help me solve an ancient mystery.
I’ve seen some movie that I would SWEAR was by Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci, [one of the] Argentos, or possibly Joe D’Amato. I don’t remember the title, nor do I even remember much of the plot, except that the main characters were a man and woman in their 30s - the man sporting a glorious early 80s beard - and their 8-ish year old son named (at least in the English-dubbed version I saw) “BOB”.
“Bob” was of course the focus and source of all evil in the film. At one point, he fishes out of the garbage bin some sort of doll which he (if I recall correctly, which I probably don’t) uses as a voodoo doll. His mother — and this is the one and only reason I want to re-watch this film — at one point breaks down into hysterics as a result and exclaims, BOB’S ALWAYS BRINGING HOME THAT TRASH!
It’s an unintentional moment of very John Waters-style absurdity. Probably 75% of it is due to the terrible English overdubbing.
Much of the film takes place in the basement of the house, presumably for budgetary reasons.
Anyway, if you happen to know what this is, spill it.

I don’t fly at all, but it’s not surprising the TSA is beefing up security after a couple of scares. Honestly, passengers are so scared of anyone taking a plane down that they will most likely take matters into their own hands now, but I think these patdowns are warranted. Had the last idiot not worn a diaper to try to blow the plane up with, this sort of patdown wouldn’t be needed. But hey! Those who are screaming the loudest these days are those that had no problem with the paranoid Dept. of Homeland Security being created! They always felt safe….well….until President Obama came to the White House. See? Being forced to sip one’s breast milk before boarding a plane was fine, but when Obama came to the scene, well, nothing goes now. Everything is illegal and unconstitutional to these people!

Those who are screaming the loudest these days are those that had no problem with the paranoid Dept. of Homeland Security being created! They always felt safe…well…until President Obama came to the White House. See? Being forced to sip one’s breast milk before boarding a plane was fine, but when Obama came to the scene, well, nothing goes now. Everything is illegal and unconstitutional to these people!
a vast number of people don’t like BO for numerous reasons….it was predicted here long ago that there would be trouble…some folks are really turned off by the droolers that worship the guy and for no good reason

There’s a difference between routine security in an airport — which has suddenly become an issue almost 10 years after 9/11 — and being stigmatized by the state for speaking Spanish and looking vaguely Mexican.
of course, there is always a ‘difference’….that’s how one can support two opposing ideas

Yep! :D I’m not sure I’d be considered an Obamabot, but when I see liberals online on other blogs going after Obama every single day and tying him to things just like Glenn Beck does, it makes me stand up for the guy (and I get banned from these blogs too). Passengers can opt out in having the pat-down and can choose to go through the scanner, but as usual, the media is reporting “the scanners can cause cancer!” and the pat downs as “you’re being molested against your will!”. *sigh* One thing not being reported is the choice in how we can travel. If people are truly upset with what the TSA is doing to protect passengers, then maybe it’s time to use a different mode of travel.

Yeah, this. Obama’s been anything but perfect. He’s done loads of things I disagree with, and he’s even pissed me off a few times. However, I can’t see myself voting Republican in 2012 without suffering massive head trauma first.
Also: I’d rather have Joe Biden opening his pie hole and saying something stupid that has everyone facepalming than Sarah Palin as VP. Biden spent 30 years building a reputation for saying idiotic things from time to time. He’s still saner and less likely to blow us all to hell for saying something about one of his kids, which puts him miles ahead of Caribou Barbie.

This was in August at an airport along the border. Every single person ahead of me in line went through the body scanner, and everyone behind me went through as well. You’d get the full body metal detector, then were asked to step through the scanner, which takes all of five seconds tops.
This was after I’d had to remove my shoes, empty my carry-on bag, and disassemble my laptop, putting it, along with the battery and cables into a separate bin from my shoes and the rest of my stuff so that I could send it all through the X-ray machine.
The whole process took just a few minutes, then I was off to my flight. I don’t remember anyone pitching a fit. They just got on with the business of getting through security so they could get to their planes.

I don’t fly either, but my objection is not whether it violates the Constitution, but rather the enthusiasm with which people who ought to know better are embracing procedures that do nothing other than provide a false sense of security.
We are always on the lookout for new ways to prevent the previous attack. We focus on the details of the last plot, rather than on the threat. We guard against guns and bombs, so the terrorists use box cutters. We become vigilant against box cutters and corkscrews, and the terrorists hide explosives in their shoes. We screen shoes, they use liquids. We limit liquids, they sew PETN into their underpants. We implement full-body scanners, and they’re going to do something else. This is a stupid game, and we should stop playing it.
Imagine a Beslan massacre happening in Ohio. Imagine three Beslans happening simultaneously in three different states. Imagine suicide bombers in shopping malls during Christmas shopping season. It’s not as though terrorists couldn’t wreak absolute chaos outside the confines of the air travel industry. Note: THEY CAN AND WILL USE OUR TENDENCY TO OVERREACT AGAINST US.
At some point we have to come to grips with the fact that we can’t turn the entire frigging country into a security checkpoint. We’re going to have to realize that we will never be 100% safe, and we’re also going to have to realize that the only way to stop terrorist attacks is to intercept them before they’re executed. That means relying on intelligence, in every sense of the word.

When my daughter and I were going through security at LAX last week, we were in the middle of taking our coats off, shoes off, laptop out of the bag in in a separate bin, baby taken out of stroller, stroller folded up and put through the Xray, baby cup fumes tested with chemical q-tip.
In the midst of all this, somebody yelled “Bravo!” which was some kind of code, or test, because they then announced “Everyone step away from your things and freeze!” Then after about two or three minutes we could resume collecting our babies and stuff.
Oh, and my daughter and I both also got patted down because we were wearing long skirts.

I totally agree with you! I really do. We will never be ahead of the terrorists and I don’t live my life like they’re going to kill me like some do each and every day. For 8 years our nation endured tons of fear and a lot of it was irrational. We are (and have been!) giving up our rights in exchange for security, but how can we stop this madness? The one time a plane goes down after the TSA decides in the future to stop doing the pat downs etc, who will be yelling the loudest? Those who are bitching today about the pat downs. Guaranteed! It’s a double-edged-Catch-22 situation and I don’t like it, but our government feels differently after some yahoos decided to try to blow some Americans up and we’re giving into the terrorists every time we change our ways. That said…Americans do have choices at the airport: pat down or scanner. At least they have a choice! *wink*

Nixon: “My fellow Earthicans, we enjoy so much freedom it’s almost sickening. We’re free to choose which hand our sex-monitoring chip is implanted in. And if we don’t want to pay our taxes, why, we’re free to spend a weekend with the Pain Monster.”
Pain Monster: “See you April 15th, folks!”

If you like. What I’m really saying is, don’t be a huge dipshit and completely ignore the would-be jihadi’s father when he tells you he’s pretty damn sure his son is going to try to blow an airplane out of the sky.
As the article points out, we had clues, and actively ignored them. Just like in the case of a certain other incident that happened one September day a few years back.

Awww, thanks! I’ve always said, “If the terrorists are going to kill me while I’m grocery shopping (my least favorite thing to do!), then fine! Go ahead!”. We Americans have to change our thinking. If after 9/11 George Bush said to the world, “We are not going to retaliate! We are going to rebuild these gawddamn buildings and will be looking forward as we do it!”, we would have appeared stronger and Americans (and the TSA!) would have followed suit in this same line of STRONG thinking. But alas. Here we are today. *sigh*

Went to the beach with the dogs today, and then stopped at a dog-park near the Costco we needed to stop by on our way home. Fozzie (a border-collie mix) is a bit of a humper, and started giving an intact male pit bull a little lesson in domination. As I reached for my phone and lightly called out “No!” (the pit seemed to enjoy it and Fozzie was really driving his point home, if you know what I mean), the damn dog’s owner broke up the encounter before I could launch my video recorder. Damn, but that would have made a fun youtube video.

377 | KayInMaine Sun, Nov 28, 2010 6:24:33pm |
When Bible Spice talks about profiling it makes me cringe. She says our police do it. Well, our police profile in a way that isn’t intrusive. They create the profile and when they bring in suspects they will apply it, but then again, their profile may be way off when they find out the killer is the exact opposite. Profiling is dangerous. Even using names to go after suspected terrorists is not working either!
I, for one, haven’t been on a plane since the early 80’s (icy landing in Boston that I will never forget), so if I was to fly today and profiling was the main way of picking out passengers I would be yanked out of line. Why? Because I would be acting nervous, I have olive skin, dark hair, and don’t make eye contact with too many strangers. See? And if I had a “non-American” name….who knows what would happen!
Americans are pretty scared of the bogeyman still. I think they are our best defense if someone on the plane decides to reek havoc.

I just bought my son a guitar for xmas.
It’s an inexpensive electric that I got on amazon, but I checked out the reviews, and for a budget guitar it got remarkably good reviews.

I missed it, but will say this…the south gets trashed unfairly by most posters here…they seem to find some sort of comfort in that they don’t live there…posers of tolerance…fakes
Way to broad brush there, Steve…unfortunately, there’s a reason why stereotypes become stereotypes and that’s because there’s usually (at least) a kernel of truth. Hell, I live in the South (Nashville) and many of the Southern stereotypes just kind make themselves evident quite often.

It’s bad enough southerners get trashed, though stereotypes aren’t created out of nothing.
But if any of you diss Hawaii it’s on like Donkey Kong.

I liked him too, he lost a friend a week or so before he flounced.
He was real rude to Charles though, unnecessary, undeserved and uncalled for, sadly.

OK, I can see the logged in posters, some of whom I know are from the south… if you don’t care then far be it from this Yankee to defend your honor.
brookly -
logged in doesn’t mean at the computer at that exact moment.
Besides - I’ve come to the conclusion that SJ gets a little nervous about positive karma, and every now and then has to throw something in there to stir things up and get a few downdings.

You’re right in that stereotypes are a bit of a broad brush themselves and are not applicable to everyone in a certain region or group; they tend to exaggerate or be over-the-top.

Actor Leslie Nielsen dies
[Link: www.cbc.ca…]
The Nielsen family was very well respected in the Yukon. The airport in Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon Territory, is named for his brother Erik, a famous Yukon MP. His nephew who is an excellent bush pilot could just smile at you and make you laugh and diffuse any stress from harsh weather or tough landings on remote airstrips. Everyone should give a toast for all the silly laughs that Leslie Nielsen gave us.

Hard not to be negatively stereotyped, when 90% of every evil character in movies or on TV has what Hollywood thinks is a southern accent.

Tried some grits the other day…put butter on them..Any other way to eat them?
I like butter & Lawry’s seasoning salt.
Or instead of the Lawry’s, Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning.
Or melt some cheese in ‘em.
