Video: Climategate Part 2, the Quotes and the Context

Climate change deniers are lying to you (again)
Environment • Views: 27,437

Here’s an excellent video by “potholer54” (real name: Peter Hadfield) on “Climategate Part 2” — the latest attempt by unknown right wingers to sabotage efforts to address climate change, by using distorted and out-of-context quotes.

The climate change deniers promoting this nonsense are flat out lying to the public about a deadly serious problem that will affect the entire world — and that’s the real scandal here. When will the mainstream media start telling this story of blatant dishonesty and character assassination, instead of blindly repeating the false propaganda?

Maybe law enforcement could get off their asses and find the hackers who did this in the first place?

My guess is on Murdoch's minions, given how much else they've hacked over the years.

There's a lot to choose from. Lots of the right-wing industry front groups regularly get up to insanely creepy shenningans. The old tobacco-industry promoters are the ones running the AGW campaign. We're dealing with people capable of conducting campaigns to promote smoking. Including in women and children.

The gop fantasy of the day is that Obama would get clobbered by Newt in a debate. Preposterous, Newt can't even beat the clowns up on stage with him now.

It seems our guys were chasing some Taliban and got too close to the border. A Pakistani guard station opened fire and we returned. I suspect this has to do with a story from earlier this week. The Pakistani ambassador to the US got caught sending a letter to the Obama regime to see if there's any US support for limiting the influence of the military in Pakistani government. The military needs a conflict to solidify power and damage US relations.

Maybe. I was never really thrilled out our alliance with Pakistan but sort of accepted it as a practical measure. India would have been the better ally. However, Bush would have one hell of a time treating Pakistan as a hostile power. At least there was some precedent with Saddam (UN sactions, no fly zones, etc). War with Pakistan would be a tough sell.

Well, as we can see now with bin laned dead it doesn't help stabalize the country as long as Pakistan is still sending terrorists across the border. Afghanistan can't be fixed without dealing with Pakistan too.

Exactly.

In 2001, we should have gone balls to the wall. Gotten Iran, Russia, and India into a meeting. Then done something that we haven't done since 1941.

Declared War on Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Using the fact of not only 9/11, but the at the time well known fact of Pakistan using cells in India to conduct Terror attacks, and well as the Mazar-i-Sharif massacre, which resulted in the death of 20 Iranian Diplomats. The Taliban were nothing more than an extension of Pakistan's government. This is seen by the fact the Taliban stripped the land of most of it's resources, and sold it to Pakistan. In fact, I would argue the Taliban was a colonial organization of a sort.

At the time, I think Pakistan's nukes were much more primitive, and we might have had the technology to knock down the missiles that were launched.

Does anyone know if there will be international election monitors in Egypt tomorrow? There is conflicting information out there:

International election monitors will be looking at the mechanics of the process -- whether it's orderly -- and election officials' understanding of the process. They also will gauge the mood of the electorate, through turnout, whether there is unrest or conflict that impairs the ability of voters to express their will, and whether there is undue influence from the parties, Mastic said.

[Link: www.pbs.org...]

There is little hope for transparency, since the SCAF has banned international election monitors (the Carter Center has been granted “witness” status) and many of the patronage systems that dominated Mubarak-era politics remain intact.

56 (I Stand By What I Said Whatever It Was)  Sun, Nov 27, 2011 11:45:46am

Hmmm. So these are probably only domestic ones…

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptians desperate to stop bullies and cheats stitching up the country's first free election in decades are lining up by the thousand, cameras and mobile phones at the ready, to help monitors document abuses and expose the perpetrators.

[…]

The High Elections Commission is issuing 25,000 monitor permits, late in the day but far more than in a widely-discredited 2010 election. At least 30,000 individuals say they want to help oversee the vote, some using websites, social media and text messaging, rights groups say.

CONFUSION

The challenge to oversee 18,000 voting stations, dozens of parties and more than 6,000 candidates chasing 50 million registered voters requires meticulous planning, well in advance.

On the eve of the polls, confusion reigns. Some parties have started campaigning while simultaneously calling for a boycott, saying the vote makes no sense while protesters massed in the capital Cairo demand the army gives up power.

The rules changed this weekend to extend each voting round to two days. Monitor permits were still being issued Sunday.

"There is an astounding amount of ambiguity. You have to be willing to suspend skepticism and cynicism and just roll with it," said Les Campbell, Middle East and North Africa director at the Washington-based National Democratic Institute, one of the groups monitoring the vote.

[…]

With thousands of Egyptians likely to be collecting evidence during a month of staggered elections, more seasoned monitors are warning of a tide of revelations that could irreparably tarnish the vote, even if it is mostly fair.

Four hack suspects linked to terrorist group

The suspects hacked the trunk-like PBX (private branch exchange) phone lines of different telecommunications companies, including AT&T, the CIDG said. Money stolen in the hacks was diverted to bank accounts belonging to the terrorists, who paid the Filipino hackers on commission, the group said.

The four allegedly worked for a group originally run by Muhammad Zamir, a Pakistani arrested by the FBI in 2007 who was associated with Jemaah Islamiah, a Southeast Asian militant group with links to Al Qaeda.

"Zamir's group, later tagged by the FBI to be the financial source of the terrorist attack in Mumbai, India, on November 26, 2008, is also the same group that paid Kwan's group of hackers in Manila," Police Senior Superintendent Gilbert Sosa said in the statement.

An AT&T representative told Reuters that it "ended up writing off some fraudulent charges that appeared on customer bills" but did not comment on the $2 million figure.

Sure. Most folks have known that for ages. Pam clearly didn't get the memo, though.

If she had, she might have thought through the whole "ZOMG BUTTERBALL IS BRINGING JIHAD TO THE TABLE" idiocy as she wrote it.

Al-Masry Al-Youm obtains leaked ballots in advance of elections

Al-Masry Al-Youm has obtained official ballots from the Red Sea and Fayoum governorates a day before parliamentary elections. The ballots were leaked in violation of the law.

Some ballots were filled with names of voters who have died, such as Ikram Mohamed al-Bendary of the Dar al-Salam constituency, who died eight years ago, as confirmed by her son-in-law, who discovered it while he was browsing the high elections committee website.

what's the lesson?

The lesson is that you can manipulate people with fear and an enemy and carve quite a good spot out for yourself.

E-bay baffles me. I just saw a makeup palette listed there for seventy bucks, which is still available on the Sephora site for less than fifty. It's one thing when the limited edition is SOLD OUT, but when it's still in stores, who's going to pay the extra?

When I hunt perfumes on e-Bay, I often see bottles listed for half again what they would cost you at Neiman Marcus or on the Chanel site.

This has been a comment from your early Christmas shopper.

I have a new desk and am not looking forward to organizing it. I had everything on the old one just right --except it was a banquet table. Now I have an actual desk with drawers and everything.

Looks much better and will probably be more servicable, as a desk.

I'm not sure how she would have adapted her ideologies to the Brave New World. I am sure she would not take the route other's seem to have taken with them.

Mexico City claims zombie walk world record

Nearly 10,000 people have paraded in Mexico City dressed as zombies in what organisers claim is the biggest "zombie walk" ever held.

Wearing ghoulish make-up and rags splattered with fake blood, the "undead" shambled and groaned through the heart of the capital.

The current Guinness world record is held by Asbury Park in the US, where 4,093 zombies marched in 2010.

Zombie walks have grown in popularity worldwide in recent years.

The craze for dressing up as the "living dead" has been fuelled by movies, television, video games and literature.

A group in Brisbane in Australia has also laid claim to the record after massing 8,000 zombies last month.

I really don't understand.

Nor I, but my husband will be excited, and want to see the pictures.

He has a detailed zombie plan which, in part, involves getting to the Big 5 store to loot it before anyone else, (they sell guns and ammo), and then falling back down the block to our police station.

So, the Internet back at home sucked, so I've missed alot of news.

First Question: What exactly occurred in Pakistan? Wikipedia is rather fuzzy, which is unusual.

We really should have done things differently in 2001.

Good, you're here. I've been waiting to post this for you:

China Rearms Bangladesh On The Cheap

November 25, 2011: As part of a major effort to modernize the armed forces of Bangladesh, China will deliver 16 F-7BGI jet fighters next year. Bangladesh already has 40 older F-7s (a clone of the Russian MiG-21), plus ten MiG-29s, which form the core of their air combat force. China is providing the aircraft at bargain prices, and doing the same with lots of other military equipment.

Earlier this year Bangladesh has bought seven 250 ton patrol boats from China. Two will be built in China, and five in Bangladesh. The 30 meter (93 foot) vessels are part of a two year old effort to rebuild the Bangladeshi Navy.

Last year, the U.S. Coast Guard donated 16 Defender-class patrol boats. These nine meter (26.5 foot) boats are powered by twin outboard engines, have a top speed of 85 kilometers an hour (and cruise at 65 kilometers an hour). The Defenders carry a crew of four, are armed with two machine-guns and can carry six passengers (or prisoners). They are excellent for patrolling the many river delta waterways on the Bangladeshi coast. The newly created Bangladesh Special Operations Force has adopted the Defender as their primary seaborne transport. Bangladesh has also bought two Castle class patrol boats from Britain, for $2 million each. These 75 meter (246 foot), 1,400 ton ships are armed with a 30mm autocannon and four machine guns. Bangladesh needs all these patrol vessels to deal with smugglers. Neighboring Myanmar is the source of opium smuggling, some which is often carried out by Islamic radical groups, to provide cash for terrorist operations.
