Kind of reminds me of Michael Keaton. His real name is Michael Douglas. The other Michael Douglas is sort of a stage name too(not sure if Kirk Douglas legally changed his name).

So, Rand Paul made it clear that he’s uncomfortable with same sex marriage. Maybe if he or his father make more clear their position on drugs. Some of the idiot social libertarians I know would realize that hypothetically both Paul and son would be okay with the states having really strict drug laws if the states themselves approved it.

Luap Dnar and his crazy father aren’t libertarians. They’re “states’ rights” neo-Confederates who would support anything as long as there was a gold standard in place, no Fed, and the states were all separate fiefdoms ruled by corporations.
The South could secede again and enslave all minorities and both Ron and Rand Paul would be right there cheering it all on.

Yep. Preaching to the choir here but you talk to some of the people I know and they’re champions of civil liberties. Have to laugh considering Luap Dnar has said he would have opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Yeah real civil libertarian there. Thinking that states should have sanction discrimination.

Yeah no kidding. It’s like hate of others is the only thing they have going for them. We know more about who and what Malkin and those like her hate more than what they love. Tonight’s 40k trivia:
13th Penal Legion (Last Chancers)
The 13th Penal Legion of the Imperial Guard, also known as the “Last Chancers,” is a special regiment composed of Imperial criminals and convicts. All the men and women of the Last Chancers are hand-picked by the fiercely uncompromising Colonel Schaeffer for the performance of suicide missions on behalf of the Imperium of Mankind throughout the galaxy. The convicts are given a “last chance” by Schaeffer to be forgiven of their crimes in the eyes of the Emperor of Mankind and this is achieved by receiving an Imperial pardon from the Colonel. These pardons are awarded only to those members of the regiment who survive a number of military operations determined by Schaeffer. Colonel Schaeffer personally pardons all those who die during an operation posthumously.
The 13th Penal Legion, unusual among the many Penal Legions that serve in the Imperial Guard, was in fact a testing ground. Schaeffer would hand-pick his regiment’s troops from Imperial prisons’ worst convicts because of some natural talent they displayed or because they possessed an uncanny instinct for survival so that they could serve as part of an elite ad hoc military team intended to achieve some difficult, usually borderline insane military mission objective of the Imperium. These dregs comprise the most vicious, ill-disciplined and unstable group of psychopaths, conspirators, thieves and traitors in the Imperial Guard who would otherwise be destined for the firing squad or the business end of a Commissar’s Bolt Pistol. Many of those offered the chance to fight with the “Last Chancers” choose death rather than follow Colonel Schaeffer, for such is the colonel’s reputation for undertaking suicide missions throughout the Imperium.

Such nastiness directed at Gabby Giffords. My only guess is that she’s probably rather effective in making her, or our, case. They fear her testimony and seek to silence it. Again, it’s about fear and loathing from the RWNJs. It’s not like she has magical powers that can create legislation but that’s how they see it. They’re like children in their logic with a heavy dose of adult borne hatred.

They think her speaking out against easy access to guns is exploiting her status as a victim of a tragedy. So, answer me this, is a terrorist attack survivor who advocates for more smart measures to combat terrorism exploiting their victim status? Rhetorical question since the answer is obviously of course not. And frankly, Congresswoman Giffords has been very fair minded on the issue. These idiots just can’t take any discussion of guns that isn’t telling them that their guns aren’t the problem.

They’re very tribal. So unless you speak out as a victim from within their tribe they get angry. They’re also very emotional people and get flustered. In this case not going beyond the notes taken for Giffords. Once flustered and angry they’re not capable of listening or comprehending what is being said or written.

There *are* mentally fragile people out there. As we saw in Newtown, they may have access to guns. The level of hate and the call to violence against “the government” (in many cases specifically to the POTUS) is beyond the pale. I think we have crossed a line here in public discourse.

Looking back on it, the Republicans used 9/11 victims for all that they were worth to justify not only Afghanistan (which I could somewhat understand, with the Taliban/Al Q link), but Iraq as well. Maybe not with direct testimony, but the memory of over 3000 dead Americans was invoked a lot.

Sen. Alexander: Video games a bigger problem than guns
Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee said Wednesday that violent video games were a bigger problem than guns in the United States.
When asked on MSNBC about proposals to reduce gun violence, such as requiring universal background checks, Alexander indicated that he was skeptical of the legislation.
“I’m going to wait and see on all of these bills,” he said. “I think video games is a bigger problem than guns, because video games affect people. But the First Amendment limits what we can do about video games, and the Second Amendment to the Constitution limits what we can do about guns.”

Man, Thomas I can see but disappointed that Breyer dissented from that.
I wrote a grad school paper on that case. I got to know it pretty well.
The dissent by Thomas was incoherent and useless. He basically says that because parents have the absolute right to control their children and, more to the point, control access to their children, they have the absolute right to have the state control access to their children, even if it means restricting speech. You know, because the Founders would never have understood the freedom of speech to include a right to speak to children without going through their parents. Or something.
The dissent by Breyer was based on his belief that correlation = causation and that kids need to be protected from video games. Not only did he blatantly pad his dissent with a 15 page list of articles that claimed a potential link between video games and violence in children, but he thought that the California law was a minor restraint on speech at best.

Yeah I read the page on the dissent. Assumed correctly that they were based on two different reasons. That logic alone by Thomas is why he shouldn’t be a model judge. I mean damn at least Scalia and Alito will mostly give good reasons for why they feel the way they do. As for Breyer, as I said disappointed, I don’t know why he can’t see why censoring games is a mere minor restraint. Glad common sense prevailed in the end though.

Not only did Scalia write the majority opinion, but he also smacked down Thomas and his pathetic dissent in the footnotes:
“He cites no case, state or federal, supporting this view, and to our knowledge there is none. Most of his dissent is devoted to the proposition that parents have traditionally had the power to control what their children hear and say. This is true enough. And it perhaps follows from this that the state has the power to enforce parental prohibitions—to require, for example, that thepromoters of a rock concert exclude those minors whose parents have advised the promoters that their children are forbidden to attend. But it does not follow that the state has the power to prevent children from hearing or saying anything without their parents’ prior consent.”
That case is the one time I’ve agreed with Scalia on anything.

It’s written in legalese, but it’s bascially Scalia, on behalf of the majority, saying that Thomas pulled his entire dissent out of his ass.

Thomas really is an awful judge. Just got a really bad impression of him after seeing him interviewed on 60 Minutes. Guy seems angry at the world and just petty. Saw Sotomayor’s recent interview and came away with the opposite impression that this is a woman who loves her job and has no real bitterness directed at anyone. Really like what I know about Kagen too so as far as I’m concerned Obama’s 2/2 with his USSC picks.

Soviet sleeper agents (Keri Russell and some guy I’d never heard of before), living in DC and spying in 1981, their kids were born here and have no idea, one of their neighbors is an FBI counterintelligence agent whose wife thinks he’s a little paranoid for suspecting an ordinary boring family next door could be anything other than just what they seem like…
Action/adventure, romance, political intrigue, 80’s music and costumes. I really enjoyed it, I think this’ll be one of my new faves.

From what I understand, Marshall hated that Thomas was going to be his successor. Read a biography of him and I read Woodward’s excellent book The Brethren about the Burger Court. Let’s say, I came out a big Bill Brennan fan. Though I have respect for the more conservative Potter Stewart and John Marshall Harlan that I did not before reading the book.

That’s too bad about Marshall seeing his seat get filled that way- but I think as far as precedent goes, Rehnquist was a far bigger scoundrel.

Yeah not a fan of Rehnquist’s at all. Seems like from what I read, he was a personally likable enough guy but his history on Civil Rights should have kept him from any federal judiciary appointment let alone the Supreme Court.

He was okay with liberal legislation, even liberal executive action, he just had a bug up his ass about courts as a means of liberal advances that legislatures weren’t ready for.
He did sign the EPA, and OSHA, Title IX, Title X, affirmative action. He even ran on civil rights in his 1960 campaign:
losing in 1960 embittered him horribly, then LBJ took the civil rights mantle away from Republicans, so he was susceptible when his campaign staff came up with the southern strategy.
102 | sagehen Wed, Jan 30, 2013 11:38:55pm |
I should add — he also went for a States Rights argument from the left; the EPA contains specific provision that whenever California wants stricter emissions limits and water quality rules than the national standard, they’re entitled to enact such limits and the feds have no right to object.

This is the tragedy of Richard Nixon right here. The man in that video ended up being the man who embraced the Republican Party’s turn to nuttery IMO. “They talk about amnesty like its some deviant sexual practice,” Stewart remarked, before playing a clip of Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer talking about “backdoor amnesty.”
But many Republicans recently softened their stance on immigration. As Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) explained, “look at the last election.”
“Not sure that’s the reason you are supposed to say out loud,” Stewart joked.

I think having a Congress with a plurality of liberal Republicans and Northern Democrats forced his hand on many issues. Still- I didn’t know about that EPA provision. Taken by itself it would seem a logical, almost conservative position!
re: #108 HappyWarrior
It does make one feel bad. It makes me feel even worse that modern conservatives think Watergate was the least worst thing he did. Not to mention the campaign funding improprieties that helped do him in are legal now.
An even-keeled Nixon might have been one of our better presidents- but the precedent of inserting regressive people into government can only lead to long term regression. Pat Buchanan comes to mind.

The FBI has control of the scene, and the cops have been very good about keeping down the noise level. Most stories are coming from local TV (3 channels) and the nearby town’s newspaper, who are getting them from neighbors, etc. This story has seen much more disciplined reporting than Sandy Hook.

Still believe in the 2nd Amendment, don’t have an issue with gun ownership. No, instead it’s a big freaking deal that she read from handwritten notes her speech therapist wrote for her. Because the bullet that ripped through her brain impaired her ability to write without it being painful and difficult. It never occurred to any of these geniuses that the therapist wrote down what Gabby asked to be written. And who the fuck has a bigger stake in this issue than victims of gun violence and carelessness with guns? Alabama child hostage situation continues into 3d day.
People who live along the rutted red clay road said the suspect is a retired truck driver with a reputation, CBS News correspondent Manuel Bojorquez reports. They said he allegedly beat a dog to death and threatened to shoot kids who trespass on his property. He was reportedly due in court this week on a weapons charge.
Neighbor Ronda Wilbur described the suspect to CBS News as “very anti-social, very anti-government” and that he “hates everybody.”
“My granddaughter who just turned 7, when I have her visiting me this next weekend, I won’t have to worry about ‘mean man,’” Wilbur told CBS News. “One way or another he’s not gonna be there. He will either be locked up, or he’ll be dead.”
Wilbur told The Associated Press that the suspect beat her 120-pound dog with a lead pipe for coming onto his side of the dirt road. The dog died a week later.
“He said his only regret was he didn’t beat him to death all the way,” Wilbur told the AP. “If a man can kill a dog, and beat it with a lead pipe and brag about it, it’s nothing until it’s going to be people.”
The neighborhood near Midland City, population 2,300, remained under siege after the Tuesday shooting, with the suspect and child holed up in a bunker-type shelter on the man’s property that was equipped with electricity, food and TV.

South Africa? Seriously? Has apartheid been gone that long that they’ve grown nostalgic for it?
Read the first paragraph from that article. It would fit right in at Stormfront.
Despite its flaws, South Africa was a prosperous country and an outpost of Western Civilization in a savage region. Having been destroyed in the name of political correctness, it is now reverting to savagery. The openly anti-Caucasian socialist government is in the process of reducing it to another Zimbabwe, the erstwhile Breadbasket of Africa that is now an infernal basket case. This makes South Africa a model for the ongoing “fundamental transformation” of America:

I started to say “say just the south” but, well, I lived in Kansas, Nebraska, and Colorado for a while and so I know better. Unless you live in the dense population zones, beating a dog to death will get you frowned upon but so long as it’s on your own property the worst you’ll get is a misdemeanor fine. Shooting at someone walking up a shared dirt driveway? Claim you were practicing and didn’t see them, have no felonies or sustained record of misdemeanors, and/or have lived there for a long time, and you’ll have a manageable bail.
He’s probably done a lot of things - reports I’ve read says he has a ‘reputation’ - but he’ll have had the benefit of “everyone knows what a kook he is”. Nobody pushed anything to a complaint, either because they were afraid or because they were the newer people and didn’t want to be ostracized by the long-timers, or perhaps because making the complaint was just more trouble than it was worth. So he’s just the guy everyone keeps an eye on when he’s around, and everyone’s happy he spends almost all his time in his bunker.
Note the above isn’t from reading about this guy. It’s my experience with others like that in the places mentioned as well as Georgia and Texas. He’s not unique, except he crossed the line.

I honest to god believe that if we arbitrarily “say nobody in this country can own a 10-round magazine in the future, the people who own them are the kind of people we’re trying to combat to begin with.” There can be a situation where a mother runs out of bullets because of something we do here.

re: #186 Ghost of Tom Joad
Yes. It was recited yesterday that we don’t want to limit the ammo capacity on firearms because women with children might run out of bullets at a time in need.
Never mind that if you’ve run out of bullets in a home invasion (your own home), you either have really bad aim, or there’s so many home invaders that a single firearm would never be enough.
Would be nice if there’d be some kind of statistics to back up the assertion - like the number of times that someone defending in a home invasion died or was injured as a result of running out of bullets in their own firearm. But the NRA has done a masterful job of thwarting federal funding for any kind of rigorous study of firearms and their use in the country.

Yes.
“think of the children” and “women and children” are buttons that tend to evoke relatively unthinking responses. The buttons work for both sides (on different topics), but in this case they’re being pushed in an extremely clumsy fashion.
They’re saying that this woman with children will be attacked by so many people she needs multiple extended magazines for her weapon (rifle or pistol), BUT she has had enough warning she can get to all the magazines. Or she carries them around even when dealing with small children. At which point this is just as likely as her needing it to defend.

Defense spending is scheduled to decline because of the drawdown following the end of Afghanistan actions, and the continued drawdown following the Iraq war. That means acquistions, replacements, and new gear needs aren’t where they were during the height of military operations.
Manpower needs are different, and so too is the kind of gear needed for conflicts. More reliance on UAVs and special forces, less on a regular army means a different force mix.
More cyber warfare means more resources needed in that area, less in others.
New tank design is in the offing, but some in Congress want to continue existing M1-A2 upgrades over Army objections because the new tanks would eclipse the capabilities of even the upgraded Abrams tanks.
Then, there’s the ongoing cost concerns with the F-22 and F-35s, including the Marine and Navy versions of the F-35, which means higher per unit costs.
It’s possible to see yet another round of base closures around the world, including stateside.
And then there’s the issue of providing medical/mental health care for returning soldiers. Last year saw more suicides among returning forces than deaths in active combat zones.

The Tucson shooter was an admitted drug user. He was rejected from the U.S. Army because of his drug use. He was clearly mentally ill. Because of his drug use, and because of what he was planning on doing. But because of these gaps in the mental health system, in this case, those 121,000 records, I admit did not include a record on him. But it could have.
And if it did, he would have failed that background check. He would have likely gone to a gun show, or a private seller, and avoided that background check. But if we close that gun show loophole, if we require private sellers to complete a background check, and we get those 121,000 records and others into the systems, we will prevent gun crime. That is an absolute truth. It would have happened in Tucson. My wife would not have been sitting here today if we had stronger background checks.

MS Gov: Our Teen pregnancy rate is high because of statutory rape
A bill that passed the Mississippi House on Wednesday is aimed at possibly identifying and prosecuting those who impregnate underage girls.
House Bill 151 says physicians or midwives would be required to collect umbilical cord blood when a baby is born in Mississippi to a mother who’s younger than 16 if she doesn’t reveal the father’s name.
DNA tests would be done on the blood as a way to try to identify the father and allow prosecutors to pursue statutory rape charges if there’s a large age gap between the mother and the father, said House Judiciary B Committee Chairman Andy Gipson, R-Braxton.
Results of the cord blood test would be checked against a database of convicted criminals’ DNA to try to find any possible match, Gipson said during debate.
However, he said in an interview later that there’s nothing in the bill to compel any man or boy to submit a DNA test to try to prove paternity. That means that even if cord blood is collected, there’s no guarantee of finding the father.
Mississippi has long had one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the country, and Republican Gov. Phil Bryant has been saying for months that he believes part of the problem is adult men impregnating girls who, under the law, are not old enough to consent to sex.
While I agree statutory rapes may indeed be part of the problem, I think a much BIGGER problem is the severe lack of access to reproductive health services and the continued focus on abstinence only sex-ed.
Of course instead of addressing those, our governor is hell bent on shutting down the only abortion clinic we have left. Yeah Phil, that’s REALLY going to drive that pregnancy rate down.

Also, here’s a fine example of the “logic” of certain right wingers:
- They adamantly believe that making abortion illegal will just about guarantee every pregnant woman will have her child no matter what.
- But they also adamantly believe that making certain guns illegal will do absolutely nothing to prevent determined individuals from acquiring them.
What’s wrong with this picture?

I suspect that for some anti’s, particularly the super religious ones, the point isn’t really to eliminate all abortions. Although I’m sure most would like to. It’s more a matter of removing the legal protection for abortion. Religiously, in the eyes of God, it more or less removes the evangelical’s responsibility for it, and in their minds, allows God to Bless America, or to at least not punish it for the “crime of abortion”.
There’s also a “don’t ask, don’t tell” quality to the anti’s position. As long as abortion isn’t legal, they can deny the reality of abortions occuring (and obviously we’ve seen many instances of this kind of reality-denying mindset).

Google Image search for Obama East Room for May 2010.
We’d have to ignore that photos can and are cropped to capture the President in action, rather than a static background. It also goes to the photographer’s vantage point/perspective whether a flag will be present, but to cherry pick from a single photo as proof that the President doesn’t have flags?
Asinine.
And it’s all too easy to cherry pick to find photos of every other president appearing at a function without a flag.

Comparing and contrasting the two photos (from your site or EJP, which has a wide angle view of the East Room, and the twitter) finds several notable differences. No flags, no piano, and no teleprompter in one, and in the twitter, you’ve got no piano and only a teleprompter.
Regina Spektor performed at the 2010 event, and clearly shows flags in the background as she performs on a piano in the East Room.
It’s a very distinctive piano too.

This answers my question:
Phoenix police say they’ve found a body that matches the description of the man wanted for an office shooting that killed a man and critically wounded another.
Authorities say the vehicle that 70-year-old Arthur Douglas Harmon was likely driving was found Thursday in a Mesa parking lot. Police say a body matching Harmon’s description was found nearby. The person died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Shit, considering that the Emancipation Proclamation which only freed slaves in rebellion against the Union was controversial within his own cabinet, you can be damned sure that outright abolition was a tough road too. Shit, considering that the Emancipation Proclamation which only freed slaves in rebellion against the Union was controversial within his own cabinet, you can be damned sure that outright abolition was a tough road too.

Just remember about 100 years ago, you had three homosexuals in the world as far as anybody really knew. There was a Canadian named Robert Ross, an Englishman named Oscar Wilde, an American named Walt Whitman. They led the charge in the early 1900’s and wound up in and out of the prison system and in court and so forth for a period of time. And again, there was only about three that anybody knew of and it was hardly anything that was mentioned among the established world at that time, that is in Europe, Canada and America. But you did have those three men, as far as history bears out, Robert Ross, Oscar Wilde and Walt Whitman were well-known for some level of homosexual activity, although they could not call themselves homosexuals at that time.
That is probably one of the most stupid things I’ve ever read in my life. But, hey, it’s still early. I’m sure someone will top it.

While the incumbency advantage exists, it’s also worth remembering that idiots or not they’re the preference for THEIR REGION, be it state or district. For what it’s worth I’d much rather see focus on eliminating gerrymandering to create better representation even if that’s of a region of idiots.

More on the gas leak across from Texas Tech:
Overton businesses evacuated due to gas leak, roads closed
The Lubbock Fire Department has closed University Avenue between Marsha Sharp and Broadway Thursday morning because of a gas leak from a broken gas main.
First responders are also evacuating businesses in the area, including City Bank, FedEx, Starbucks and Plains Capital Bank.
According to Texas Tech spokesperson Chris Cook, Texas Tech has not been affected by the evacuations. They are sending out an alert to students to avoid the area, and they are re-routing student buses.
Officials believe the gas leak is coming from a 6-inch main line and may take a couple of hours to repair.
Lubbock ISD police are monitoring the situation at nearby Ramirez Elementary School. No evacuations of the school have been ordered at this time.
Marsha Sharp to Broadway is 7 blocks so this is quite a large area. University Avenue is the eastern boundary of the Texas Tech campus.

Applebee’s fires waitress for exposing pastor’s ‘give God 10%’ no-tip receipt
A waitress says she was fired from her job at Applebee’s after posting a note from a pastor who refused to tip, writing that “I give God 10% Why do you get 18.”
The waitress, who identified herself only as Chelsea, told The Consumerist that she originally posted the photo on the atheist section of social media website Reddit as a “lighthearted joke”.
[…]
The waitress said that the she failed to redact the signature because she thought it was illegible, but Internet sleuths began using it to obtain the pastor’s identity.
[…]
On Wednesday, the pastor reportedly contacted the Applebee’s location where she worked and demanded that everyone involved — including the managers — be fired.
Demanding someone to be fired….obviously the “Christian” thing to do.

Kaufman County Judge calls shooting an ‘ambush’
A Kaufman County assistant district attorney was shot dead outside the courthouse Thursday, spurring a complete lockdown of the grounds and an active search for the two shooters.
Kaufman County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Pat Laney said the suspects ambushed the assistant DA on his way in to court and shot him multiple times in a parking lot at about 8:50 a.m. They then fled the scene. The courthouse was locked down and later closed for the day.
The Texas Department of Public Safety sent out an alert for troopers to be on lookout for a silver “older model” Ford Taurus. According to the alert, the two suspects are wearing all black and at least one is in a tactical vest. DPS choppers are flying low over the treeline in north Kaufman.

Also, according to her original Reddit post,
They ran up well over 200$ before taxes or gratuity. They asked for separate checks, thinking it would get them out of the [automatic gratuity], even though the same man paid for everything.
They had no problem with my service, and told me I was great. They just didn’t want to pay when the time came.
and
[The gratuity] was only compulsory because it was a table of 20. Parties up to eight at my work may tip whatever they’d like, but larger parties receive an automatic gratuity. It’s in the computer, it’s not something I do.
I think the whole restaurant industry’s wage practices are stupid, but still. Do not mess with people that handle your food. Hasn’t anyone seen Fight Club?

Prosecutor gunned down outside Texas courthouse
A Kaufman County assistant district attorney was shot dead outside the courthouse Thursday, spurring a complete lockdown of the grounds and an active search for the two shooters.
Kaufman County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Pat Laney said the suspects ambushed the assistant DA on his way in to court and shot him multiple times in a parking lot at about 8:50 a.m. They then fled the scene. The courthouse was locked down and later closed for the day.
County Judge Bruce Wood confirmed the victim’s identity, however his family has not been notified. Wood told News 8’s Jonathan Betz that the victim was not working on any high-profile cases that would’ve required any extra security. Investigators are following up on his caseload, however.
Wood told Betz that courthouse security is always tight, but not in the parking lot. He classified the shooting as an “ambush.”
During a press conference, Sheriff David Burns and Police Chief Chris Aulbaugh said the assistant DA was heading to misdemeanor court when he was assaulted and gunned down.

Butch Otter’s proposed state health insurance exchange heats up, a North Idaho senator has sent out a mass email and posted a message on Twitter comparing the role of insurance companies to “the Jews boarding the trains to concentration camps,” saying the federal government is using private insurers and in the future will “pull the trigger” on them.
Q. Will these idiots ever learn NOT to compare anything they don’t like to the Holocaust?
A. Probably Not.
I hope no one in real life uses the word “Holocaust” in my presence unless they’re referring to the actual events in WWII or there’s gonna be a fricking scene and I’m gonna have to call VB to bail me out of jail.

Just want to point out that the pastor in the Applebees story has been on TV, and she is a pastor of the African-American variety.
Still a dickish thing to do though, especially calling the place to complain. You’ve been called out - accept it and move on. WWJD etc.
Gender and race are immaterial. A dick is a dick.

It should be noted, that though your post looks like a comparison of one thing to something similar, it is not. Gabby WAS attacked by a terrorist, and IS currently fighting terrorism when she tries to get guns off the street.
