Those early reports that Lanza’s mother was a “prepper” look more credible now. That’s one hell of an arsenal. A bit more than one would reasonably need for personal protection.

And what’s up with the photos of a dead body? Did Lanza kill someone else before the massacre?

Well, obviously she needed all those guns for when the government came for them…wait…

The day before the mass murder, Adam Lanza would have been considered an educated, safe gun owner by the NRA.

Jared Loughner was a relative piker (repost from previous thread):

Tucson ammo seller lied to make Loughner go away

[…]

About 7 a.m. the morning of the attack, Loughner tried to buy more ammunition.

A clerk at Walmart, 7635 N. La Cholla Boulevard, later told deputies that Loughner was acting so erratically that he lied and said the store was out of stock.

Loughner approached the clerk walking really fast. After seeing that there was no 9 mm ammunition in the display case, he urged the clerk to look for more in the back.

Feeling uneasy about how rushed Loughner seemed, the clerk announced that he was out of stock before he even checked.

“I could tell on his face that he was really angry about it,” the clerk told investigators. “He just kind o’ swung away and just walked off.”

Another employee who helped Loughner at the customer service desk said, “He’s one of those types you don’t forget.” She also said he seemed rushed.

Loughner successfully purchased ammunition shortly afterward at another Walmart store, 8280 N. Cortaro Road. He spent $83 on eight boxes of bullets.

[…]

More stories about Loughner just before his shooting spree are in the sidebar.

He even had a gun safe.

NRA claims that, despite an NRA certificate and book found in the house, the Lanzas weren’t NRA members.

re: #6 Walking Spanish Down the Hall

I do not recall that. I do remember that the NRA sent no broadcast messages to its members for a week.

9 Stanley Sea  Thu, Mar 28, 2013 5:37:06pm

Oh! Don’t forget his mother!!! Well that lady was shot in the forehead while she slept peacefully with her armed to the hilt anti-social son.

Motherly love is one thing, aiding and abetting another.

10 freetoken  Thu, Mar 28, 2013 5:38:53pm

And then we have this, published in the Las Vegas Sun:

The NRA is the tip of the iceberg

[…]

There are about 4.3 million National Rifle Association members. About 110 million Americans own more than 325 million guns — and this number is going up.

There are a lot of gun lobby groups besides the NRA. Members of Congress don’t fear just the NRA, they fear their constituents, and that’s the way it should be.

After the 2014 midterm elections, we are not going to have fewer pro-gun senators and House members; we are going to have more. Probably a lot of them will be Tea Party members.

This government is in serious trouble, with the old guard and President Barack Obama not willing to step up to the plate and make the serious budget cuts that are needed. […]

The Second Amendment provides the pathway for America to help put this country back on a sound financial footing. It won’t be easy, but it is certainly worth it. Mark Twain said, “Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.” Very well said. You already see sheriffs in several places saying they will not enforce new gun laws.

It’s just beginning.

From downstairs:

The best we can do is look at the people we know and If they are off, and people are allowed to be “off”. But if you are a friend or family member, you owe it to the public to do something if you know they have guns.

Can you get certified as trained by the NRA without being a member? They don’t say exactly which type of certificate the Lanzas had.

I will probably need to stay away from this topic for a good month or two, as I will most certainly verbally assault any person that tries to link ASD to violent behavior.

re: #7 Targetpractice

That might be resolved as in a lapsed cert or membership.

By active sporting / target shooting standards that is not a lot of ammunition. Ask anyone in IPSC, Steel Challenge or IDPA. It’s a lot for the occasional shooter as in a few times a year. I think I see a typo, the enfield should be .303, which squares with the ammo. I never heard of a .323 round.

re: #6 Walking Spanish Down the Hall

Wasn’t there a tweetfest claiming he didn’t belong to the NRA?

Yep. It’s just a minor detail. The NRA said they were not member. They could have received certificates for a shooting competition sponsored by the NRA. The gun activists want people to get distracted with that information. They’ll claim victimhood over this or as the NRA worded it “reckless, false and defamatory!”

16 Charles Johnson  Thu, Mar 28, 2013 5:42:06pm

The photos of a dead body are a very creepy detail. Seems like there’s more to this story waiting to come out.

Riiight, because rushing to judgement about things is something the NRA would never, ever, do.

Not when I certified, no way. But these things expire annually. As in annual fees. NRA would say I am not a member, but a search here could find my old certs for 5 kinds of instruction. Or in my storage.

19 PhillyPretzel  Thu, Mar 28, 2013 5:45:01pm

re: #15 Gus

There are lots of classes given by the NRA all over the nation. An old chat buddy from another forum tried to get me to go to a few classes so that I could become “certified.” I told him I was not interested.

20 freetoken  Thu, Mar 28, 2013 5:48:43pm

For all the violence, and revelations about the perps, what will change?

Deep down the reason US politicians don’t act on gun ownership is that they are afraid they’ll offend a large enough group of voters that they won’t be re-elected.

I don’t see that changing any time soon.

21 Charles Johnson  Thu, Mar 28, 2013 5:49:43pm

re: #18 Political Atheist

Not when I certified, no way

That’s what I thought, but I wasn’t sure. So when they got the certificates, they pretty much had to be NRA members.

Armed protesters show up to counter Indianapolis gun control rally

A group participating in the “National Day to Demand Action” to end gun violence in Indianapolis this morning faced a counter-protest from gun rights advocates, who brought their loaded firearms with them.

The group Moms Demand Action held the rally outside the Indiana Statehouse on Thursday to call for an assault weapons ban, restrictions on magazine sizes, and an end to the so-called gun show loophole. A member of the organization told Think Progress she was unsettled by the presence of armed counter-protesters, who were from a group calling itself Indiana Moms Against Gun Control.

re: #6 Walking Spanish Down the Hall

Wasn’t there a tweetfest claiming he didn’t belong to the NRA?

That’s still at least technically plausible. You don’t need to ever have been a member to the NRA to have a certificate from one of their training courses.

Based on the honor system, shooters acquire the large discipline patch at the onset of the program and, as each rating is earned, they are entitled to all of the corresponding awards for that rating.

They only require membership for the Distinguished Expert rating, and only then if the person want’s “national recognition” which probably just means having their name published in a newsletter.

The NRA uses the training programs and certificates to lure people into membership, to sell the identity, but membership isn’t a prerequisite to acquire a certificate.

Was it me by my comment? I do not want in any way people with Aspargers or anything to be vilified. Aspargers peeps should be just like any other. Always.

My point is if you know someone who, gosh, I don’t know, is anti social in a bad way, they should not have access to guns. For themselves and the people they gather with.

That’s common sense, drinking prob peeps, angry peeps, etc.

“Indiana Moms Against Gun Control” has a Facebook page.

There are posts by moms named Brad, Bill, Bryce, Anthony, Scott, Mark, Kevin, Patrick, Adrian, Conrad, Matthew, Joey, Sean, John, Nick, Don, Virgil, Dennis, Thomas, Jesse, Curtis, Aaron, Rusty, Jonathan and Don.

But, there were about 4 posts by women, so I guess it’s technically correct.

NRA has a waiver process for those Range Safety Officers that are also certified instructors and have reported a minimum of two NRA Basic Firearm Safety Courses using NRAInstructors.org. Instructor/Range Safety Officers submit a request in writing for the upgrade, a résumé of shooting experience, a letter from the range or club officer or manager on the range or club letterhead, requesting the upgrade and why, with a payment of $11.00 for members and $26 for non-members.

Zimmerman’s brother tries to justify comparing Trayvon Martin to alleged baby killer

Confronted by Morgan that his posts were “bordering on outright racism,” Zimmerman seemed to agree. “That’s one way to read it,” he said. “And that seems to be the way a lot of people have interpreted it. I don’t think Twitter is the place to make points about what you recall a year ago, because the recollections that I have, or that we have as a family specifically, are very different than what can be portrayed in 140 characters.”

He added that while an apology was posted to Twitter, he feels that the media has not portrayed Trayvon Martin in the way he sees the deceased teen. “What I’m saying is, yeah he was 17, and he chose to portray himself, by his own hand, in a certain way,” Zimmerman said.

“A 17 year old posts a picture of himself gesticulating in a slightly rude manner, on Facebook, that doesn’t make him a killer,” Morgan said. “You’re likening him to someone who’s been charged with shooting a baby in the head in a stroller. That’s an unbelievable analogy to make, isn’t it?”

“No,” Zimmerman said. “Those are your words, sir. Those are not my words.” He added that it seemed all Morgan could see in his tweets is “color,” and not the substance of his statement.

“But they’re two young, black boys,” Morgan said.

“Well, they’re also 17,” Zimmerman shot back.

Pressed on his comment that “ppl think blacks mightB risky,” Zimmerman insisted that the host “stay on topic.”

“What I’m saying is, both of these people were 17 years old, and before Trayvon Martin was a household name, and before Demarquis, you know, from Georgia was a household name, they had an identity that they portrayed. And I’m not saying that because you flick off a camera, that says anything about you, other than that’s the way you choose to portray yourself.”

I hate to say it, but the only real red flags in the what the feds found were the bushmaster and the saiga (which is basically a 12 gauge semi-automatic ak-47). Everything else seems rather normal for two people who lived in a semi-rural area and liked to shoot.

One deer rifle, one plinker, 2 handguns (judging by the ammo, there is probably a .45 somewhere they didn’t find). I know plenty of non-prepper, non-gun nuts with more than this. The bushmaster with 7 magazines and a semi-automatic 12 gauge with numerous 20 and 30 round magazines on the other hand….

In New Jersey to get even a rifle, a permit is necessarry . That requires a background check , fingerprinting and listing atleast two non-relatives that you have known for three years or more , who will be questioned by authorities about YOU .
This is totally reasonable . Conceal and carry permits are fine ,as people who carry large sums of money etc . The overwhelming majority of gun owners and enthusiasts are responsible and sane people . I dont buy the bullshit argument about “penis extension etc” that’s all blather . Lanza’s mother was IRRESPONSIBLE in the first degree . She had a son who wasn’t wrapped tight , she knew it , yet taught him to use guns .She knew he spent his time obssessing with guns and playing violent video games all day and night .This kid could have NEVER bought a gun on his own . Especially in Conn. He wouldn’t get one here in Florida .Any guns in that house should have been locked in a safe or cabinet .The mother had no sense and paid with her own life , and bears responsibility along with her son for the deaths of those kids .

Can you get certified as trained by the NRA without being a member? They don’t say exactly which type of certificate the Lanzas had.

As far as I know you don’t have to be a member to take NRA courses. That would be counter to the idea that the NRA trainers truly want to educate people —which has been my experience at the grass-roots level.

That’s what I thought, but I wasn’t sure. So when they got the certificates, they pretty much had to be NRA members.

There are lots of certificates. Took this course, won that match. ROI at a range. My cert was as an instructor for them. I had to be a member. then I dropped tht and threw in with the IDPA, which let me integrate that sport as an adjunct to my self defense stuff.

I even had a blog-Full Spectrum Self Defense. Full spectrum meant from simple prevention, through martial arts, and up through defensive handgun.

It might well just be a range by range policy, with the ones you went to funneling everyone into membership and Grand Blanc Huntsman Club and others offering instruction at higher rates for non-members. This at least recognizes that some people want training but very much don’t want to be NRA members. Some gun businesses are more ideological than others, one of the local gun stores here crosses through the optional SSN field on their form 4473’s because they’re just flat out opposed to the government asking for it at all.

To be fair the NRA of today isn’t the NRA of even a decade ago, let alone the org as it existed in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. The entire culture has changed. The Government used to trust the NRA to conduct mass sales directly to the public of surplus war rifles. I still have the receipt for the M1 Carbine that my Dad passed down to me, he got it for $16.50 plus about $2 shipping and handling.

Back then you could get any number of USGI semi automatic rifles and 30 round mags sent straight to your door. In retrospect that seems really fucked up, but nobody questioned any of it until after both of the Kennedys were assassinated.

South Carolina Republicans Distance Themselves From Todd Kincannon

On Sunday, Todd Kincannon, a South Carolina lawyer and the former executive director of the South Carolina Republican Party, tweeted that it was a “shame” an antiwar veteran “didn’t come home in a body bag.”

Kincannon didn’t stop there. The political blog Little Green Footballs took screenshots of the full Twitter tirade against Mike Prysner, the Iraq war vet turned antiwar activist.

When a supporter of Prysner tweeted back, “Damn Todd. That’s pretty fucked up,” Kincannon responded, “Go read what the asshole wrote. I wish the Iraqis had better aim with his ass.” And a final tweet: “I hope if that guy is ever in combat again, the enemy splatters his brain JFK-style. He deserves it.”

And so the GOP’s attempt to rebrand itself hit another snag—not just from a random member of the base, from a former party operative.

Now South Carolina’s Republican establishment wants nothing to do with Kincannon.

A prominent GOP operative in South Carolina who asked not to be identified told The Daily Beast that Kincannon was “generously editing” his résumé to emphasize his time in the state party’s leadership. The operative said Kincannon served as executive director of the organization for just three months before resigning.

Since I have children in elementary school, I think about this in a way that is very, very personal. Plus, my father practices shooting at the same place that Lanza’s mother did. So. I don’t think I need to explain how this is, for lack of a better phrase, too familiar.

But what isn’t familiar is the insane arsenal contained in this home. Insane. No one needs this. No one should want this. No one should allow this.

We need to get past our ability to rationalize the “okayness” of our gun culture. Because it’s the gun culture that allows a family to own this obscene amount of fire power.

How the families of those dead children and teachers don’t throw themselves on Congress every.single.day is amazing to me. Their strength is beyond my comprehension.

Those early reports that Lanza’s mother was a “prepper” look more credible now. That’s one hell of an arsenal. A bit more than one would reasonably need for personal protection.

And what’s up with the photos of a dead body? Did Lanza kill someone else before the massacre?

The Lee-Enfield rifle was more of a collectable and target shooter, of a kind many people have. The .22 was a ‘plinker’, designed for basic ‘fun-type’ target shooting. That leaves one rifle, one shotgun, and two pistols of more modern type. I know people who own a good bit more than that.

Not an arsenal, not really. Fairly plain, as gun collections go.

It’s just a Kalashnikov shotgun, though it can’t fire full-auto. It really is used as a hunting weapon though, since it has all the durability Gen. Kalashnikov built into its operating system.

True Story: When observing the firing of a pre-production SG-12, a US firearms journalist asked if the SG-12 was as endurent as the AK-47. In reply, one of the Russians taking put in the firing test picked up a handful of sand, locked the SG-12’s bolt back, then proceeded to pour the sand directly into the receiver. He then loaded a 7-round magazine, chambered a round, and the fired all 7 rounds without a stoppage. The Russian gentleman then turned to the correspondent and declared “A Kalashnikov is always a Kalashnikov!”

Firearms site guns.com smacks Robert Zimmerman for his DERPy appearance on Piers Morgan’s CNN show:

Last night on Pier’s Morgan’s fledgling CNN show Robert Zimmerman Jr., brother of George, came on as a guest to try and explain his racist tweets from this past weekend. As expected a meltdown incurred as Piers Morgan only likes to hear the sound of his own voice and George Zimmerman who although is smart, is his own (and possibly his brothers) worst enemy. As you can read in this article, Robert Zimmerman poorly tried to point out an existing media bias by somehow linking images of Trayvon Martin and alleged baby killer De’Marquise Elkins by Tweeting innocuous photos of them flipping the bird on Facebook. He then followed that up by tweeting this is the reason people might think blacks are ‘risky.’

Robert Zimmerman is right in that there was and is a media bias against his brother George and gun owners everywhere regarding stand your ground laws. The problem is he is doing his brothers defense and everyone else in the gun world a diservice by misrepresenting facts and delving into racial commentary he is constantly having to apologize for.

It’s the best we have the ability to do right now, but I’d not say that it’s always easy - Until I filed a fingerprint card and got a Unique ID number from NICS I received a 72 hour hold on every long gun purchase that I made. That said, putting money and better records into NICS is the best possible outcome that will actually happen. Even that may cost the Democrats the Senate so the Majority Leader is probably really skittish right now trying to appease the Left while holding off the Right.

Christian Right Now Outraged At Being Told Their Faith Is Meaningful to Them

Scott’s insinuation that the professor was trying to teach a “lesson” of hating Jesus Christ or religion or whatever is pure, unadulterated horseshit. I guessed right off the bat that it was either going to be a psychology or communications course where the whole point of the exercise was to examine the power of symbols or taboos or something like that. Sure enough, that’s exactly what it was.

“Ask the students to think about it for a moment. After a brief period of silence instruct them to step on the paper,” the synopsis said. “Most will hesitate. Ask why they can’t step on the paper. Discuss the importance of symbols in culture.”

The point of the exercise was to demonstrate to students that words aren’t “just” words, but have weight and value. Students were told ahead of time that many of them would not step on the paper because of this. Students were expected not to stomp on it, because the point of it was to examine why some words have so much power over us. Not only is this not really that hard an exercise to understand, it’s the sort of party trick to teach an important lesson that church youth groups and camps use all the time. The complaining student, Ryan Rotela, is so incredibly stupid that he has no idea how stupid he sounds.

Rotela, who identifies himself as a Mormon, said that he put the paper back on his desk instead of stomping on it.

“Any time you stomp on something, it shows that you believe that something has no value,” he said. “If you were to stomp on the word ‘Jesus,’ it says that the word has no value.”

No shit, Sherlock. That was the point of the exercise. Too bad you’re literally so stupid that you can’t even learn something after you fucking learned it.

SCALIA: Tell me, Counsel. Gay marriage: Bad for children, or the worst for children?

COOPER: We really don’t know. Gay marriage is so new. We have no evidence. It could be that gay marriage will cause aliens to descend on this planet and eat the flesh of all children under the age of sixteen. Or maybe not. We just don’t know. We have to think of the children.

KENNEDY: This is extremely persuasive to me.

KAGAN: So what you’re saying is that when there are no longer children to think of, no marriage?

COOPER: Precisely.

KAGAN: So a state could pass a law refusing to recognize a marriage between people who are both over 55?

COOPER: No, because they could procreate!

KAGAN: I have checked with my girl parts, and they assure me this is not possible.

There’s also the fallout from Andrew Cuomo’s DERP of a gun control bill, whose mental health reporting provisions were so poorly written that DoVA told its doctors in New York State not to comply with the law.

FAILs like that do not help a cause.

Scalia has it backward, the only evidence is that gay marriage is good for children. There are statistics.

For obvious reasons, the children of gay marriages do better than average children. Obvious reason being that gays who adopt children had to go through a hell of a lot to do it, they’re motivated.

Having gone through the wringer that is international adoption (and which is a 1000x easier than the hell they put you through for an in state adoption), I’d have to agree with this. Expensive and paperwork that makes the US Army look like amateurs at bureaucracy. At least we had the good fortune of going through the least corrupt communist nation (Socialist Republic of Vietnam) so that the fees we paid really were fees that went to the orphanage rather than some asshat’s pocket like in China or in the former Soviet block.

It’s a parody, Stabby.

The parody isn’t far from the truth though. Scalia really is a sniveling bigot, and completely full of shit on this subject. Did you bother listening to the oral arguments in Hollingsworth v. Perry?

JUSTICE SCALIA: Mr. Cooper, let me — let me give you one — one concrete thing. I don’t know why you don’t mention some concrete things. If you redefine marriage to include same-sex couples, you must — you must permit adoption by same-sex couples, and there’s - there’s considerable disagreement among — among sociologists as to what the consequences of raising a child in a — in a single-sex family, whether that is harmful to the child or not. Some States do not — do not permit adoption by same-sex couples for that reason.

JUSTICE GINSBURG: California — no, California does.

JUSTICE SCALIA: I don’t think we know the answer to that. Do you know the answer to that, whether it — whether it harms or helps the child?

MR. COOPER: No, Your Honor. And there’s - there’s -

JUSTICE SCALIA: But that’s a possible deleterious effect, isn’t it?

MR. COOPER: Your Honor, it — it is certainly among the -

JUSTICE GINSBURG: It wouldn’t be in California, Mr. Cooper, because that’s not an issue, is it? In California, you can have same-sex couples adopting a child.

MR. COOPER: That’s right, Your Honor. That is true. And — but — but, Your Honor, here’s -here’s the point -

JUSTICE SCALIA: I — it’s true, but irrelevant. They’re arguing for a nationwide rule which applies to States other than California, that every State must allow marriage by same-sex couples. And so even though States that believe it is harmful — and I take no position on whether it’s harmful or not, but it is certainly true that — that there’s no scientific answer to that question at this point in time.

Yes there is.

Still, there is a growing consensus among experts that the sexual orientation of parents is not a major determinant in how well children fare in school, on cognitive tests and in terms of their emotional development. What matters more, researchers found, is the quality of parenting and the family’s economic well-being.

“I can tell you we’re never going to get the perfect science, but what you have right now is good-enough science,” said Benjamin Siegel, a professor of pediatrics at Boston University School of Medicine. “The data we have right now are good enough to know what’s good for kids.”

Siegel co-wrote a report issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics last week when it came out in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage. The group looked at more than 80 studies, books and articles conducted over 30 years and concluded that legalizing same-sex marriage would strengthen families and benefit children.

The best study, Siegel said, is the National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study, which began in 1986 with 154 lesbian mothers who conceived children through artificial insemination. A recent look at 78 offspring found that the children did fine — better, even, than children in a similar study involving more diverse families.

A couple houses down the street had “Yes on Prop 8” signs when that issue came up. My heart broke. Our “No on Prop 8” sign got stolen and I’m fairly certain it was our neighbors who replaced it for us. Only political yard sign I have ever put up.

And more to the point Scalia’s argument is an irrelevant dodge. We don’t gauge the validity of marriages on their comparative ability to raise children. He’s creating an entirely new test not as a objective measure of all marriages, but as a proscriptive barrier to gay marriage only. In essence he’s trying to justify a violation of the equal protection clause by asking a question that in itself violates the equal protection clause.

He’s fractally wrong.

IL wins national train-building work Walker, legislators killed in Milwaukee

When Scott Walker forced the termination of a proposed Madison-to-Milwaukee Amtrak line - - a component of a regional high-speed train system the Obama administration wanted to extend into the state - - he also sacrificed the construction of train equipment for other states initially-planned for the developing Milwaukee factory in the economically-depressed 30th. St. corridor.

All to block the construction of the federally-funded Amtrak extension that Walker claimed would cost Wisconsin $10 million a year to maintain (when the state routinely budgets billions annually for highway building and millions for maintenance, plowing, patrolling and other activities) but which state transportation officials said could actually be as little as $750,000 annually.

And to deny a legacy to Gov. Jim Doyle, (D) who’d set these wheels in motion in cooperation with Pres. Obama - - even if it meant squashing a new industry in the state with regional and national implications, and Wisconsin’s leadership in passenger rail moderization.

Wisconsin lost an $800 million grant, with a few bucks retained for improvements to the successful Hiawatha line between Milwaukee and Chicago; the Obama administration sent the rest of Wisconsin’s fundis to other states, including Illinois where there was and is high interest in pushing high-speed connections with the Midwest regional system Walker declined to join.

More on that same incident:

The couple charged in the incident is Bradley Turner, 40, and his wife Christy Turner, 30, of La Grange, North Carolina, the Carteret County Sheriff’s office told the Sun Journal.

What they did, according to Guns.com, is a textbook example of what is NOT a self-defense situation.

The Turners, with their toddler, were driving down Institute Road in Newport, North Carolina, Sunday afternoon. At some point during the drive a young man chauffeuring his buddies pulled in front of them or, from the Turners’ point-of-view, cut them off. Either way, the Turners apparently saw it as an abrasive maneuver and as too many motorists today seem to think, felt the need to punish the perpetrators.

The Turners followed the vehicle to a neighborhood and parked behind it. If you watch the video, which was caught on a passenger’s cell phone camera, you’ll see Bradley Turner aggressively approach the young driver. He curses at him and accuses him of poor driving but ultimately punches him. In response, the young driver and his buddy fight back until they knock Bradley Turner to the ground. At which point they walk away.

What happens next raised the Turners’ behavior to a possible felony level and serves as a serious reminder of the dangers that can occur when emotions (like the kind you might feel after getting cut off on the road and beat up) are permitted to trump sensibility.

Christy Turner stepped out and handed her husband a loaded handgun, who then pointed it at the young driver. The young driver and his friend run away (as they should because a pissed off dude has a gun). While walking toward the young men, Bradley Turner trains the gun on one of the two men (he reportedly fired one shot in the video, but it’s difficult to tell), stops and retreats to his SUV. That’s where the video ends.

My Ph.D. adviser finally had to cave to getting reading glasses while I was working on my degree.

On the other hand, I already have glasses specifically for closeup work (I do counted cross stitch on high-count fabric), to try and avoid making things worse. And then the distance glasses. For driving.

Fun story: my sisters and I all got our (distance) glasses the same year despite there being up to almost 8 years between us.

Question self answered, the “Enfield bolt-action .323 rifle” listed is a typo it should read .303, I thought the .323 seemed strange because I had never heard of a 8mm Enfield rifle before. After checking online I confirmed that there is no such thing as a .323 Enfield while of course British .303 Enfields are very common.

EDIT: Made particularly famous here in America by the movie “Zulu” about the battle of Roarke’s drift [sic?]. I still remember that from many years ago.

The Lee Enfield is probably the .303 British. The .323 is likely a typo, it’s almost unheard of for an English rifle to be re-chambered in that caliber, the most common cartridge for which is properly called 8mm Mauser.

192 goddamnedfrank  Thu, Mar 28, 2013 9:58:38pm

Despite the idiot police, the Enfield is a .303 rifle. Not .323 which is the actual diameter of the cartridge called 7.92 or 8mm Mauser.

Lies and blasphemy, just efforts to tie together two completely irrelevant facets of the conversation!
