Yep…..a safe zone needs to be secured by force. So how’s that gonna happen? Trump’s just gonna cut off a chunk of Syrian territory and give it Turkey or something? Is he planning on invading Syria in order to establish these safe zones? Maybe he’ll outsource it to Russia, LOL.
This is just Trump talking out of his ass, as usual. He has no plans, he has no idea what to do, nor does he even stop for one moment to contemplate the consequences of his actions. He’s the dog that caught the car.
Watching “Rodan” on TCM right now.
The Japanese military found the rodan nest near a volcano and rocketed it. So Rodan has just gone all Samuel L Jackson on Sasebo - “you fuck with my nest, so I’m gonna go fuck with yours!” Japanese aircraft, tanks, and rocket launchers notwithstanding.
Also noticed in one of the model scenes a small advertisement poster that is of the Sambo/blackface mode.
And all this due to some coal miners digging too deep. Sort of like the dwarves letting the Balrog loose.

re: #15 Charles Johnson
It’s certainly occurred to me that the Trumpists are a cult movement, much like the LaRouche Movement, though obviously far more successful. The Trumpists are akin to the People’s Temple, a malignant cult with a charismatic, quasi-apocalyptic leader.
Of course, the biggest difference between Trump and the Rev. Jim Jones is that Rev. Jones didn’t have a civilization-ending arsenal of nuclear weapons at his disposal.
We now see clearly what the ‘alternative’ version of the oath of office is: Defecate in panic on the Constitution, run away and blame liberals.

Speaking of President Carter, there is a little factoid regarding his run in 1976 that actually is relevant today.
Jimmy Carter at the time of his Presidential candidacy was the owner of his family peanut farm, and was required to place it in blind trust while he was in office. It is a pretty safe bet that he had zero involvement in the farm while he was in office, because once he returned after his presidency, he discovered that the trustees had mismanaged his farm and left it about a million dollars in debt, and was required to pay out of his own pocket to keep the business afloat.

Been reading up a little bit on Title I and Title VI on the Ethics in Government Act - this is the set of laws that govern business conflicts of federal officeholders.
There is a number that people should make note of.
Ninety Days.
That is the amount of time that the US Attorney General has to begin investigation of allegations of conflicts of interest and other allegations of corruption by high office holders. If he does not investigate by that time, then there is a provision in the law that automatically appoints a special independent prosecutor to conduct the investigation - and at that time ALL investigations will be done by him, and the Department of Justice is removed from the process. Findings are directly reported to a non-partisan congressional committee, and oversight by a 3-judge panel appointed by the US Supreme Court.
This law was passed in 1978, as a direct response to the events of the Saturday Night Massacre from the Watergate era, where Nixon had fired those people directly responsible for investigating him.

The cluelessness of the administration continues:
Trump Withdraws Proposal to Create Safe Zones in Syria (Goes to Huffington Post)
That clause [in the Muslim ban executive order] would have instructed the secretary of defense to draft a plan within 90 days to create “safe zones to protect vulnerable Syrian populations,” according to a copy of the draft published by The Huffington Post on Wednesday.
The decision to omit the safe zones proposal allows the Trump administration to avoid, at least temporarily, the complex questions that such a policy would raise. Creating and protecting safe zones could increase American military intervention in Syria, and pose a number of political and logistical problems regarding its implementation.

Who appoints the special prosecutor?

There is something very wrong about the Trump EO—-JFK situation. Not something morally or politically wrong, but something wrong in the mechanics and method. It can’t happen this fast. The President does not speak to the platoon sergeant or to the on-site border agent. There is a process for turning any president’s intent into action on the ground, and this is not how it works. At HQDA (Pentagon) level an Executive Order is not implementable until it is incorporated into new or existing Army Regulation and coordinated through all pertinent G-Staff Army agencies. This takes weeks at a minimum, and until then it is meaningless to the chain of command that leads down to the poor sod that has to make things happen. The process has to be much the same at the Border and Customs agencies. There is no way the grunts at JFK knew what to do. Someone had to subvert the critical process designed to avoid this kind of fuckup.

Trump’s Immigration Ban Excludes Countries With Business Ties
President Trump has signed an executive order that bans citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries in the Middle East from entering the United States for 90 days, according to the White House. His proposed list doesn’t include Muslim-majority countries where his Trump Organization has done business or pursued potential deals. Properties include golf courses in the United Arab Emirates and two luxury towers operating in Turkey.

The cluelessness of the administration continues:
Trump Withdraws Proposal to Create Safe Zones in Syria (Goes to Huffington Post)
Putin most certainly told Trump, “No” and of course, that was that. Safe zones in Syria would need to be created and guarded by force and unless Trump was willing to carve of parts of Syrian territory (to Turkey, no doubt) or send in the US military to enforce said safe zones (which Assad - and possibly Putin - would most likely consider an act of war) then he had no choice but to drop the idea.
Again, cluelessness and not thinking through the possible consequences of his actions.

Agencies have noted on the alt-government Twitter channels that the administration is not running EOs by the agencies they affect. They are simply implementing them.
EOs are usually vetted by the relevant agency (EPA, Navy Department, Education, &c) to see what relevant laws and policies apply. They are then promulgated down the respective chains-of-command so that everyone is on the same page when it takes effect.
This is more evidence that the wingnuts in the administration have no clue how to run a government. This makes me wonder HOW it was implemented so quickly. You’re right…the government is like a massive ship. It cannot stop quickly or turn on a dime. How was it logistically possible to do this so fast?
Judges to state: Redraw legislative districts before 2018 election
A federal judicial panel says state lawmakers and Gov. Scott Walker must act before the 2018 election to redraw legislative district boundaries that the court recently struck down as unconstitutionally benefiting Republicans.
In an order released Friday, the judges say Wisconsin must devise a new redistricting plan for the 2018 election and have it in place by Nov. 1, 2017.
State officials pledged to swiftly appeal the order to the U.S. Supreme Court. Should it withstand appeal, the ruling could reshape the 2018 legislative elections, giving beleaguered Democrats — now badly outnumbered in the Legislature — hope to win more races.
But Friday’s order also rejected a key request from plaintiffs: that judges, rather than lawmakers and the governor, take charge of creating new district boundaries.

Yes. On request, we wrote (actually usually revised) a family of Executive Orders that pertained to our staff function, then sent them up the DA/DoD chain to the Prez. That’s where little EOs come from.
When it got approved and signed, sometimes a multi-year process, it came back down to us and we wrote or changed the necessary ARs.

It wasn’t implemented rationally. That’s why all the chaos with people literally in the air when it was determined they would not be allowed to enter. It was simply written badly, signed, and implemented immediately, with Rep. Ryan and Sen. McConnell both coming out and saying they supported it.

If ever you wanted a textbook example of the balance fallacy (when two sides of an argument are represented as having comparable value regardless of their merits), or of revenue-driven, shameless pseudoscientific clickbait, this would be the place to see it in the wild.
On one side of the debate you have NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. It is a large collection of professionally trained scientists, some of whom have spent decades specifically studying the science of asteroid tracking, engineers who are trained to operate multi-million dollar instruments to perform said tracking, and offices whose sole purpose is to monitor the trajectory of near earth objects. This organization’s NEOWISE mission detected an object dubbed 2016 WF9 on 27 November 2016. After collecting enough data on its orbit, they reported that it was no threat to Earth on 29 December 2016:

As with all yam administration actions, there is their story and the (likely) facts:
White House aides claimed on Saturday that there had been talks with officials at the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security over the past several weeks about carrying out the order. “Everyone who needed to know was informed,” one aide said.
But that assertion was denied by multiple officials with knowledge of the interactions, including two officials at the State Department. Two of the officials said leaders of Customs and Border Protection and Citizenship and Immigration Services — the two agencies most directly affected by the order — and other agencies were on a telephone briefing on the new policy even as Mr. Trump signed it on Friday.

Let’s see if the Congressional Democrats react appropriately. Something like the following would be a good start, especially if backed up with investigations etc.:
“The Democratic Party of the United States of America does not cooperate with fascists or normalize them. Since Trump and the Republicans are now clearly revealed as fascists, we will vote against everything put forth by the Republicans.
The only exceptions to this would be acts of Congress to nullify Trump’s executive orders, and impeachment proceedings, which we expect to begin forthwith if Congressional Republicans have any decency at all.”

What happened, Ari, you total asshole, is that sometimes there AREN’T two sides to every story. Sometimes there is irrefutable fact and a lot of white noise.
I just explained this to my 9-year-old daughter last night who said she didn’t think she believed in climate change. I told her that’s fine, but she’s wrong. She acted surprised because I didn’t take her “belief” into account. I told her there are facts and then there are opinions. If your opinion is opposite of the facts, then your opinion means absolutely nothing and you are wrong on top of that. She changed her mind.

re: #177 BeachDem
Right. This doesn’t sound like something that would be officially said by an agent.
Inside the airport, one of the lawyers, Mark Doss, a supervising attorney at the International Refugee Assistance Project, asked a border agent, “Who is the person we need to talk to?”
“Call Mr. Trump,” said the agent, who declined to identify himself.
This is condescension, not official directions.

I agree. The GOP has already plunged the rusted knife into their own throat, and we’re starting to see the slow bleed out with an enraged and furious populace. Anything they and Trump will make it worse for them, and the visible hatred towards Trump, Ryan and McConnell will exacerbate.
The best analogy is 1791 France. Question is, do we respond in the same way the French did or do we force a changeover through more orderly means?
I’d love to assume the latter, but humanity’s animalistic tendencies suggest the former.
Al Gore swoops in to save CDC’s climate and health conference
Thanks to a push from former Vice President Al Gore, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s conference on the health effects of climate change is back on for next month in Atlanta.
The conference was abruptly canceled by the agency following the election of Donald Trump. Though the CDC has given no explanation for the cancellation, co-organizer Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association, called it a “strategic retreat,” the intention of which was to avoid upsetting the new administration and allow it to have input on the conference. The CDC said the conference may be rescheduled later in the year.
But Gore and others weren’t having that, apparently. In an interview with the Washington Post, Benjamin said, “He called me and we talked about it and we said, ‘There’s still a void and still a need.’ We said, ‘Let’s make this thing happen’… It was a no-brainer.”

I edited the post. Word is swirling through Manhattan that at 6PM all NYC cabbies are going on strike.
Here’s another one from arstechnica:
In Berlin, refugees become friends—through board games
The current refugee crisis is not a game. There are no clear rules, information is often untrackable, hidden variables can lead to utter chaos, and there’s no endgame in sight.
And yet, tens of thousands of refugees were welcomed into Berlin—my adopted home city—during the past year. As they have taken up residence in makeshift shelters and previously abandoned buildings, I find myself connecting with many of them in my neighborhood through the shared language and experience of playing board games.
I am often frustrated that I can do little to help them navigate the German bureaucracy, find a job, or secure an apartment, but what I can do is give them the dignity of spending time with them and listening to their stories.
Whenever I play games with others, we share each other’s stories. The games themselves do not have to tell a story; they simply give us a starting point and a framework for interaction. The multicultural game nights I host through meetup.com are often just the beginning of ongoing stories—relationships that soon go beyond playing games together. And now the same is happening with my new refugee friends.

I’m back. My Trump-supporting store owner (who was always very clear about that every time I came in) was awfully quiet about what’s going on today, as the television reported what’s going on.
No mention of Mr. Trump at all, in fact. Just cashed my lotto tickets and took my money for the things I bought (he was sold out of booze: weather was too bad the last couple days - he only keeps a few bottles in the store and they haven’t been restocked).
Very quiet. I wished him a good day and left. His only words aside from the total were “thank you.”
I won a free ticket and another $8 in the lotto. My escape fund is now up to CAN$230 plus $31 of lotto winnings.

Don’t keep tweeting at Donald Trump that President Bannon is controlling him. Mr. Trump might take his revenge out on Steve Bannon and the poor guy might be out of a job.
At this point, I almost wonder since the GOP is in a suicide pact and may not institute an impeachment or XXV Amendment resolution that the best thing might simply be to harass Trump on his favourite platform until he turns on his own staff.
Mr. Trump has to be in control and think people love him. If he thinks his staff is controlling him or lying to him, it might get ugly real fast.
So don’t do any of that stuff to Mr. Trump.

Rep. Keith Ellison calls for ‘mass rallies’ against Trump orders
HOUSTON - Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., who in 2007 became the first Muslim member of Congress, said in an interview Saturday that opponents of President Trump’s executive orders on immigration and refugees should oppose them in the streets.
“It’s time for people to get active, to get involved, to vote and to organize,” said Ellison, whose district includes Minneapolis and was in Houston to campaign for chairman of the Democratic National Committee. “Trump must be stopped, and people power is what we have at our disposal to make him stop. We need mass rallies. We need them all over the country. We need them in Texas. We need them in D.C. We need them in Minnesota.”

Way up the thread, I asked if anyone knew if immigration law as cited by Cornell University meant this EO was unlawful.
The New York Times just answered that: “Yup.”

JFK without cabs.
Kind of seems like these predominantly Muslim drivers are an integral part of our culture, huh?#RefugeesWelcome https://t.co/Snz7RyXxkO— Alex Blank Millard (@Hippoinatutu) January 28, 2017
re: #303 BeachDem
And before the yam made his little announcement about how nicely things are working out at the airports, he signed THREE more EOs.
Donald Trump signed three executive orders on Saturday afternoon. One of these addressed lobbying, the second was on the structure of the National Security Council and Homeland Security. Trump then announced that his final executive order was “the plan to defeat the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, in other words, ISIS.”
The yam certainly has had a busy day…
At least he’s gotten those problems completely solved. Nice.

Easy peasy. Just say the words and it’s done. (WHY hasn’t anyone else ever thought of such a brilliant idea!!)
