I think a little bit of both honestly. There’s a lot of true believing far left people I know from my own more far left days that are absolutely legit. Now there are other people who no doubt like to sow division within the left. And then there’s a combination, those who certainly are on the left who use right wing bullshit to attach their own side.
Here’s that Reddit thread: Wikileaks: Tom Perez collaborated with Clinton and actively undermined Sanders during primary. You know what to do guys, get shitpostin and split the democrats apart.

Delaware Special Election: Senate District 10 race draws voters, complaints
From the video on that page, Delaware Speaker of the House said people are telling him that they came out to vote, that they haven’t voted for a while but came out to vote because they know how important it is now.
According to the state’s election result page, voter turnout is 34% — pretty big for a special election.
With 15 of 16 districts in, 58-41% D-R — Can this be called now?!

The Coded Language of For-Profit Colleges —The Atlantic
The industry refuses to acknowledge its success is predicated on inequality.
When economists say that these agile, responsive institutions are better suited to career training, they’re talking about inequality. In the knowledge economy, technological advancements make human labor more efficient. More work can be produced with fewer workers. A consequence of that efficiency has been greater economic insecurity. The more insecure people feel, the more they are willing to spend money for an insurance policy against low wages, unemployment, and downward mobility. Those least likely to have an insurance policy that our labor market values are people for whom higher education has always been a long shot: poor people, single parents, the socially isolated, African Americans, the working class.
When education researchers talk about the unmet consumer demand that for-profit colleges serve, they’re talking about inequality. Who is mostly likely to go to good schools with college-prep classes, have medical care and stable housing, focus on standardized tests, and have the money to participate in extracurricular activities? And who does not have those social resources that many traditional colleges assume their likely student will have? Again, the answer can be summed up by race, class, and gender

It gets really confusing in later seasons when there are multiples of the main characters due to time travel stuff. I stopped watching it at that point.

I gave up on Continuum after season 2. Problem is the story kept getting more complex, but the rationale of the characters made less and less sense.
I like time-travel as a genre, but there’s not been one I’ve liked in a while. Timeless really falls short on several measures, Frequency I found boring, and the other one (name escapes me) that ran last season all had the same illogicity about the meaning of “now” and “past”.

Oh, yeah! The FX have been especially good depicting the alien lifeform. The high-g maneuver by the Roci was not, however, at all convincing. I was expecting at least some CG work to distort the crew’s faces, but nope.
I’m still impressed by the authors’ imagined political scene, with Earth-UN, Mars, Luna to a lesser extent, and the Belters/OPA. The motivations of the various factions are believable, as are the social and psychological effects of living in this future time. Plus, there’s an original first contact situation. Winner!

As for Dark Matter, it’s also pretty well done, but with FTL spaceships and androids. The last season introduced a Bladerunner-type subplot with a group of androids who live in secret among humans after rewriting their programming to gain emotions. Here, the political environment in dominated by interstellar corporations, with a few quasi-independent planetary governments to mix things up.
It’s more light-hearted than The Expanse.

I liked the Halle Berry Sci-Fi series too.
Of all the recent TV series in the Sci-Fi genre, The Expanse strikes me as the most serious (as far as “science” and also drama.) Season 2 seems a bit too much into the boy-girl relationship stuff… perhaps an attempt to grab more of the young female demographic.

That great word “villain” should be as popular here as it is in the UK.
Right before election day 2016, my British stepbrother Paul was telling me about how the villains, i.e., Tories, took over his country’s government, and how we shouldn’t take our government turning villain for granted as well.
I hadn’t thought about that since until chatting him up on the phone today. “Fecking working class Cockneys,” I told him, “You’ve seen it all down the centuries, haven’t you?”
“Just as much as you donkey American Micks,” he replied. “The villains are running both sides of the pond now, mate. It’s Reagan Thatcher all over again.”
And then we talked about fucking Manchester United for a hella lot longer than this Liverpool fan cares to remember. But that’s another story.
You’d like my bro in law Paul. Nice chap.

Exactly! I remember trying to explain that effect to my physics students one time, but failing to convey what it would look like. Years later, someone models it on TV. D’oh!
NASA, or perhaps some other space organization, has already worked out the math of rotating space habitats. Incorrectly done, it would really screw up our vestibular canals. Bending down to tie your shoes would probably make some people hurl, or at least get very dizzy. Plus, the Coriolis effect would make falling water apparently curve in interesting ways.
Speaking of spinning habitats, Passengers (the movie). The writers have the ship lose power and somehow the ship stops spinning and “gravity” goes all haywire.
No.
A spinning ship will keep spinning, with or without power, especially with the kind of mass that thing would have.
There were other problems I had with that movie, but I was willing to suspend disbelief for them. The spin-gravity goof had me thinking, “How could you guys be so stupid!?”
Also, how come the ship isn’t flipped around as it approaches its destination? It’s supposedly barreling in at a decent fraction of the speed of light. Be a good idea to slow down, I think.

I tend to fall back on the standard BBC Mystery series. Endeavor has been enjoyable. And Inspector Lewis —but you have had to watched Inspector Morse to really enjoy it.
We’ve found Acorn dot com to be an excellent investment for internet TV via a ROKU unit.
All the Inspector Morse/Lewis episodes plus every Mid-Sommers Murder episode. Also plenty of Agatha Christie movies. We’ve also found many of the New Zealand and Australian crime/murder mysteries are very challenging to figure out.
AcornTV is a reasonable choice for about $6 per month.
The Last Detective, Death in Paradise
I could go on and on. I sit on the couch a lot in pain —binge watching anything that will distract me.

Heh, Midsomer County is some kind of Stephen King hellscape with that per capita murder rate. Also, it occupies non-Euclidean space to contain so British countryside.
In all likelihood all the murders were done by still-ambulatory corpse of Ms. Marple.

Faceless ninjas are like Muslim terrorists in the USA. The imagined number far exceeds the supply.
I like how the internet has brought about a market for series length stories. They get more indepth than a movie without being hampered by network segment requirements. A year or two in episodic series to tell a story works well.
Kinda like the old serial stories published in magazines.

Watched the first season. Attractive actress, shows her skills. But after that I found the story tied into too many knots.
re: #192 Nyet
I’m really torn about it not getting another season.
I mean, where it ended worked, but there was still plenty of twisty psychological gaming and international hi-jinks that could have been teased out of it. And the actors just did wonders with the interactions that made the big scenario personally frightening; particularly when the focus was on those committed to the plan.
And I really wanted to see Adeel Aktar’s character as the new Mr. Rabbit.

I was crushed! OK, maybe not a whole season but at least a special. OK, forget special, make a comic book… but no.
That said, the nature of the show is such that it works even so. It would have to be open-ended anyway. And yes, Aktar stole the show.

Once again, an incredibly diverse group. White and paler.
Oh, yeah, the other current time-travel series is Travelers. I watched the first half of the first season. But I found after the mid-season climax I lost interest.
And, it suffers from the same time-travel-genre error that Timeless and Frequency suffer. Namely, all three of the writing teams seem to not accept that the past really is the past compared to the now. All three series want the past and the now to be concurrent.
re: #209 ipsos
I saw him live at Red Rocks in 2007, he had just released “Modern Times.” I love “Modern Times,” such a weird gorgeous album with an authentic old-timey sound.
I thought the live performance was okay. He donned a guitar and sang “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35” to open the show, which was pretty cool (he very rarely, if at all, plays guitar on stage these days). He played his hits from before the motorcycle accident (Blowin’ In The Wind sticks out) and he played songs from his Time Out of Mind-on period.
Like I said, it was okay. Nothing life-changing.
Even though the show came off as a bit too much white-washing of Americana, the series Seven Days tackled the principle time-travel paradox head on, rather than run from it. I found that quite endearing and helped me enjoy the show, even though the characters were quite shallow.

re: #214 Nyet
Not that I’d ding anyone from the ensemble, but he really stood out.
And it was really a great development that his face-heel turn stuck; I kept thinking Wilson would bail or run. They did a great job of giving the “bad guys” understandable drives and complications—not that their idea wasn’t horrific, but that they really felt that utilitarian urgency to stave off something worse. Part of the reason I really wanted to see Wilson replacing Leitan was because it would give us a picture of the larger push-pull of perspectives in the organization. He was still committed to a “nice” and “just” version of the plan, but would others fall into line? The Network cultivates brutality and exploits venality to meet its ends, so its never really ethically clean—but as the world gets worse, as the pressure rises, that would be when callous expedience and selfishness would further crack their principles.

It’s been several years since I’ve come back from Japan, but while I was there I noticed that young people had a hard time writing kanji, as they now use keyboards to enter the sounds and the menus pop up for the kanji.
Keystrokes are easily forgotten if not practiced. I’ve probably lost 2/3rds of what I learned at one time.
re: #229 Belafon
They’re dropping cursive, which I don’t mind. They’re still teaching handwriting.
I find that kind of sad. I wish that not only would schools teach cursive, but a variety of calligraphy related arts.
When I try to read my ancestors’ writings, it takes me a while to adjust to the different writing styles.
There is an important connection between muscle control and memory, and the loss of cursive hand-writing may have wider impact than just not being able to read our ancestors’ records.

The alleged noble goals clash with their more than minimally evil methods. OK, I can grok utilitarianism, but they are not utilitarian. I mean, in the very first scene they have a bunch of wholly unnecessary, senseless deaths due to the killer duo’s sociopathy. Not to mention that the whole McGuffin chase was for naught, which means even more senseless deaths. So even if one accepts the ethical dilemma as real (within the confines of the series), it’s easy to oppose these particular Ozy-wannabes.

He’s anything but a fool, he makes a lot of money on spewing his anti-white hatred. He’s not white himself, btw, he’s a Jew, so this is not self-hatred by some naive white liberal, this is pure hatred from an individual who hates whites because they are different from him and because it’s easier to hate on others who are not Jewish like him than to take a critical look at himself. The litmus test of any individual’s honesty is the capacity for self-criticism but you’ll never see him tackle the issue of Jewish privilege in the US. That says it all…

It’s frustrating when I have to read some handwritten Nazi-era era document - damn, how can one write so illegibly, as they usually did? But I still consider myself lucky if they wrote in the normal cursive, because there was also Sütterlin, and that is simply impossible to read without training even when completely legible.

I was wondering why the pseudo-intellectual defense of trumpism is something I find far more offensive than the “durr hurr” youtube fare, and I think it’s because of the patina of legitimacy it tries to lend to something as abhorrent as white nationalism. Plus, the sense that someone well-educated should damn well know better, though my rational mind tells me it’s just another manifestation of “smart idiot” syndrome :/

re: #240 Nyet
Oh yes, they’re absolutely fucking barmy and atrocious. Even as the audience is presented with the logic of the plan and its supposed ethical basis, you’re already encountering people in the Network who are clearly having fun with their power and use of force. The Carvel-Leitan folie aux deux that defines the second season is such a great development because how strongly it suggests the illogic built into the Network: this isn’t about logic or planning and never was. It’s about deeply twisted love (both for individuals and “humanity” as an abstract) and people trying to make cruelty a virtue. What Carvel does to his son and daughter is suggestive of his flawed reasoning about everything else. The foundation’s never been sound, but the believers haven’t noticed because they feel good believing.
I like how they present that missionary zeal. People excusing horrors because of a big picture…but their “big picture” doesn’t justify anything, because the audience can see it’s just a massive horror built of smaller ones. It’s sort of like when I encounter people who are really convinced that Rapture is coming: the actors even get the eyes and facial expression right. They sort of bliss out on that Rapture-logic, that they find it meaningful elides into it being acceptable.

I’ve returned to this game many times throughout the years, so good the storylines are.
As opposed to my experiences with “Space Quest 6: Roger Wilco in the Spinal Frontier” which I want to like, but unlike the rest of that great series of games, it’s just not very good.
re: #272 De Kolta Chair
As I have “Space Quest 6: Roger Wilco in the Spinal Frontier” but only because it’s just not very good.

Did you return to the game (why then?) or did you return the game? ;)
I prefer SQ5 of all of them.
I also like the classic Sierra VGA graphics the best.

5 is great, but 2 “Vohaul”s Revenge” is my fave, maybe because it has the daftest storyline (insurance salesmen taking over the universe!) and that tricky vine maze cracks me up every time. The important thing in either game of course is to save often! ;-)
re: #275 De Kolta Chair
The EGA versions (not to mention CGA) were just not up my alley (I did play all of them tho when VGA remakes were not available).
Speaking of VGA and horror, have you played the Chzo Mythos series?
re: #143 Birth Control Works
Just about anything with Nicola Walker. She gives any production value.
River was really good —about a neuroatypical detective —she is his deceased partner that still helps him in the form of a hallucination/delusion. Well done series.
Touching Evil—not only Nicola Walker, but Robson Green (yum), who is also wonderful in Wire in the Blood.
