Kokoda Track 1942-1943

The Kokoda track region appears much as it did in 1942 when the Australian soldiers fought there. Along the track, trenches and rusted weapons can still be seen. There are almost none of the facilities a tourist might expect to find: no electricity, no shops, and each madly rushing stream is crossed by means of a simple log bridge. Following in the steps of the Australian soldiers remains a physically challenging task, to be attempted by only the fittest of bushwalkers amongst us.

Totally stupid Dad Joke that I am ripping off from a podcast I listen to:

How do you find Will Smith after a snow storm?

Follow the fresh prints.

Amazing talent in that video! I think I saw sparks flying from his fingertips.

People have been watching how many times he’s played golf, stayed at his properties, had Press Confs, everything.

Has anybody kept track of how many times he’s actually been to a church to speak or even attend services?

Off for the festivities shortly.

To all Lizards - wishing you peace, and thanking you for helping maintain what precious little sanity I have left.

The people who care about church attendance think he goes everyday and twice on Sunday.

Kokoda Track 1942-1943

The one time I ever heard my father speak about his service in WWII, it was a reminisce of his combat service in New Guinea. The main themes of his (fairly short) tale were heat, humidity, and the horror of jungle warfare. So I read up on that campaign later, and I realize it must have been way worse than anyone could ever adequately describe. RIP Bill Ryan: he was lucky to have survived.

Dad had been working on Wall Street in 1942 when he got drafted (age 26). He asked one of his business connections to pull some strings for him to keep him out of the infantry. So it happened: and he was assigned to train as a paratrooper. And got his wings. And then got sent to New Guinea, where airborne operations were, to say the least, superfluous.
“The Army Way”….

I need to get to work but I cannot wait to get home and continue my lamb stock. Here’s a photo last night of the bones after about an hour simmer. I nailed the color. No spices or salt, just bones, heat, and water. Was dipping Ritz in the stock to taste: holy shit was it already yummers. Need 6-8 hours of total low simmer/heat to fully break down all the collagens and get that marrow out.

Roast lamb bones after simmer

The romance writing world is currently being shook up by the decision of the Romance Writers of America to suspend writer Courtney Milan for a year. Milan’s crime? She called out racism.

The Romance Writers of America has suspended Courtney Milan, one of the genre’s most popular and outspoken novelists, for tweets criticizing the work of other romance authors, The Wrap reports.

Milan was the subject of complaints by authors Kathryn Lynn Davis and Suzan Tisdale, who were upset over Milan’s tweets about Davis’ 1999 novel Somewhere Lies the Moon. Milan, who is Chinese American, called Davis’ book “a fucking racist mess” because of its portrayal of a character with Chinese heritage.

The RWA ethics committee ruled that Milan had violated “the organization’s express purpose of creating a ‘safe and respectful environment’ for its community of writers.” The committee recommended that Milan be censured, suspended from the RWA for a year, and banned from holding any leadership positions on the RWA board.

On Twitter, Milan called the committee’s opinion “appallingly bad.” “It decided that saying that a book was ‘a fucking racist mess’ was something that a writer could not do,” she wrote. “The Board accepted this opinion.”

Here’s the Twitter thread from August:

Smart Bitches, Trashy Books is also covering the story, but they are decidedly in Milan’s corner: smartbitchestrashybooks.com

One thing you should know about Courtney Milan, is that in a previous life, before she started writing bodice rippers, she was a lawyer. In fact, Heidi Bond (her real name) was one of six women who spoke to the Washington Post about 9th Circuit judge Alex Kozinski’s sexist or sexually inappropriate behavior and forced him to resign in 2017. In other words, before she started writing full time, she was a clerk on an important appellate court. I really think the RWA screwed up big time.

The Romance Writers of America have rescinded its suspension of Courtney Milan after a blast-ex of responses from the membership.

Now they are getting a second blast-ex on Twitter over their weasely non-pology.

RWA figured out she’s a lawyer, and now they’re consulting with a lawyer to determine if they need to cover their butts.

The board simply accepted a complaint and only posted one side of the complaint before suspending her? And didn’t consult with a lawyer on an ethics case?

Damn, my village board should be running RWA. We would have not fallen into such a trap (and we have a lawyer on staff).

“We screwed up, and people are leaving the organisation and demanding refunds on our upcoming conference; how can we cover our butts?”

re: #40 Anymouse 🌹🎃

Hey, I’m glad you saw this! RIP re your stepfather.

I’m talking online to a friend of mine about it right now. She wrote a tweet.

I am not much into romance novels. I read them in the 1970s to see what they would get away with after “Sweet Savage Love,” not so much for the sex itself. Then I went to law school and read crime procedurals. Now that I’m older, it’s page down, page down, page down through the sex scenes, I’m just not interested. My friend is telling me about ace (asexual) romance novels and I am intrigued.

ETA: RWA KNEW Courtney was a lawyer, she served on their board and got a special award last year for bringing issues of race to the RWA’s attention. Somehow, though, they lost their frigging minds and decided to pander to flat-out racists.
