My mother always went by her middle name too, but that was because all Portuguese women of that generation were named Maria (ok, not all, but an disproportionate number).
It got confusing so they pretty much all went by their middle names.

My mother is named Sharon. She prefers her more hippie middle name Dawn. (Not to be confused with the Key in “Buffy.”)

I’ve got a couple of red hats. One is for a wild animal rehab center and the other is for a (closed) bookstore. I’ve had a couple of people tell me they were relieved once they could see they weren’t MAGA hats. The bookstore hat actually has a little cow embroidered on the back so that should be a giveaway.

This was more or less the prevailing view of the founders’ age. Single, (usually) white, property owners could vote, if they were over 21 years old. That would often include single women (New Jersey, I believe initially let married women vote for a few cycles). But the thought was that married women would vote the same as their husbands. Which makes me wonder what the hell kind of marriages men experienced back then

Washington Post isn’t playing with its fact checking tonight
washingtonpost.com
Then — Vice President Biden’s role in Ukraine, and his son’s involvement there, make for a complex story. President Trump and his allies seized on kernels of truth to build an appearance of scandal that resonated with Trump’s supporters and raised questions in some voters’ minds. Trump argued that Biden had demanded a quid pro quo from the Ukrainians, the same charge Democrats lobbed at Trump concerning his pressure on Ukraine to investigate Biden.

But at its core, Trump’s tale, repeated at the RNC by Bondi, was a fiction: There had been no prosecution or investigation of Biden’s son Hunter, and Joe Biden’s actions in Ukraine were fully coordinated with the State Department and America’s European allies.

I doubt that. The country will just continue to wither and die. It is too divided with at least 42% members of the cult of Trump. The Senate GOP (with one possible exception) have demonstrated repeatedly that they are incapable of standing up for the Constitution. Hitler had less support when he took over. The fact that he isn’t down to 10% support after murdering 180,000 Americans tells us what we need to know about our fellow Americans.

Well they’re apparently already in a trademark dispute with Netflix since they trademarked the name for their show and possibly merchandise before the government could. So there’s that

I’m pretty sure that the government can get a Patent thrown out, since they run the USPTO.

I’m starting to become hopeful of a 47 state blowout again. I would like to see 50, of course but given the cult’s devotion, it is hard to think of anything that would allow that, and if such a thing exists, it would probably be very bad.

Given how the GOP is a full-blown cult at this point, I really don’t see any sort of blowout in November. We’ll be lucky if it’s 53%/47% in favor of Biden, given the abject stupidity of the average American voter.

I agree. 538 says his approval rating is 41.6%.

To put that in context, after the economy tanked in September and October 2008, George W Bush’s rating was in the high 20’s. Jimmy Carter’s was in the low 30’s for much of 1980, and Nixon left office with a 22% approval.

Know your map/estimate provider. electoral-vote.com uses a simple algorithm which has a little averaging but mostly just the most-recent poll unless there’s been multiple in the last week.

In the case of Texas, SUSA did a poll which showed Trump 4 up, and that was most recent until today(?) when another poll came in showing Biden +1. Which do you believe? I have my doubts that Biden can carry Texas, but that the Trump campaign is spending $$$ there tells us it’s not totally a lost cause.

In any case, this map is swingy at the state level - don’t get too excited until polling density improves.

Yeah, it’s the same lie that was told in “The Silent Scream” way back in 1984, but instead of suction, it was video of a needle touching a fetus and the fetus moving away. The fetus at that point doesn’t have the wiring to feel pain and this is an autonomic (sp?) response. I gave Ari a fucking earful.

Anyone who follows me on Twitter, sorry not sorry for all the use of the word SLUT tonight in my tweets, but every time anti-abortion people start going off, I am reminded of how I was 16 years old, had had sex exactly once, thought I was pregnant, and this “pro-life nurse” told me I was a SLUT before telling me I was not pregnant. Shortly thereafter (as in, “within a month”) I went off the deep end religiously, to the point where I scared even my parents, who (at the time) attended a Lutheran church pastored by the most obnoxious and conservative pastor in the state of Texas. Yeah, it was a seriously contributing factor to what happened. I’ve been dealing with the fallout ever since.

It’s not even ass kissing, it’s not even a partisan bias.

They’re people that no longer live in the real world because they’ve become accustomed to the idea that everything is a game of language because they themselves play games with language and think it’s the most important thing in the world, because rhetoric can make people do stuff and making people do stuff is “power.”

Because they’re so up their own asses they get a vicarious thrill from reactionaries…and particularly Trump…so shamelessly using ANY rhetorical tactic—even the ones you’re not supposed to use because they’re unethical—because ultimately the moral parts of their brain have atrophied after years and years of training themselves to not value shit because it gets in the way of access, better paying positions in beltway media, and fancy luncheons.

It’s like if we asked a cabal of horse fuckers to construct a political platform and they made all the criterion of rulership related to skill in horse fucking.
