In the category of “2020 continues to suck”:

Afghanistan Hit By New Wave Of Polio Cases Amid Coronavirus Pandemic (Radio Free Europe)

Afghanistan’s long battle to eradicate the crippling polio virus has been thwarted by conflict, migration, and myths over the vaccine.

But the war-torn nation of around 30 million people has faced a new hurdle: the coronavirus pandemic.

Polio vaccination drives in Afghanistan, which has the world’s deadliest ongoing conflict, were halted in March to limit the risk of transmitting COVID-19 to children, parents, and health workers.

Although vaccination campaigns resumed this month, health authorities are grappling with a surge of new cases of polio, a childhood virus that leads to deformed limbs, paralysis, and even death.

Africa was just declared free of polio. The only remaining countries in the world are Afghanistan and Pakistan. More at the link.

“…Tensions boiled over in downtown Portland last weekend when pro-police, pro-Trump demonstrators fired paintball guns and used pepper and bear spray against anti-racist protesters. One man named Alan Swinney, a member of the Proud Boys hate group, which frequently engages in violence at protests, even pulled a handgun on demonstrators at one point. Police intentionally did not intervene to break up fights, to much criticism. (For his part, Swinney appeared at another rally this week, again armed with a handgun and a paintball gun.)”

That goes back to the long game of suing a municipality into bankruptcy if the politicians won’t get their police under control.

Meanwhile in Omaha now:

Black Lives Matter supporters protest in Omaha’s Old Market (Omaha World-Herald)

Everyone here knows the Civil Rights Movement wasn’t some simple sit-in kumbayah moment. It contained lots of violence against protestors.

All that’s happening now is the continued struggle against conservatives who would pull us back into the Dark Ages with their fear of everything their religions tell them to be afraid of.

Society sometimes takes steps backwards when conservatives temporarily gain control of them. Conservatism contains the seeds of its own destruction, since the goal is gathering and conserving power. That means they turn on each other.

Stupid untrained people doing stupid untrained things is not surprising. These folks are more likely to hit people closest to them. Which often includes their friends and colleagues.

This can also happen with trained people as well in combat situations. (There were several incidents of friendly fire portrayed in the movie series “Band of Brothers”.)

The better units spend a lot of time in small unit training. A major reason is that everybody needs to know where everybody else is. And hopefully will be less likely to shoot them.

I was on one set of night maneuvers where I was in a foxhole watching my field of fire. When somebody stood up right in front of me. He got a three round burst from me. (Fortunately, it was blanks.)

It turned out to be my squad leader. A man not known for deep thought. For example, considering why he was in front of my defensive position in the middle of the night, without telling me.

While I felt that the unit leadership was much improved by my response, I was kind of irritated that he caused me to give away my position.

In my view, there’s a massive criminal liability staring Facebook in the, er, face. You can make some sort of fairness/ignorance argument for passively hosting violent terrorist content, I guess, however bullshit.

But Facebook has been suggesting these kinds of groups to people who weren’t in them. And, I assume, people for similar groups around the planet. Most countries have specific counterterrorism laws against recruitment and facilitation for terrorist organizations, and are not very happy about people who do this. We now have a global social media superpower involved in recruiting and facilitating terrorism, and this can’t go on.

I really shouldn’t look at Twitter, even when directed there from here. Or in that case I need to not look on the sides.

“Only 6%” is Trending (in the US of course) on Twitter. Why you may ask… because a bunch of stupid MAGAts and Al Qaren operatives are posting (a verbatim cut and paste might even be bots doing it) little blurb about how the CDC “quietly” admits only 6% of the deaths are from COVID-19.

Because the CDC stated that only 6% of COVID-19 deaths had no comorbidities.

So they are either TOO STUPID TO BE ALIVE and think 94% of those people died of something else (which would include… obesity, asthma, etc. sure do see hundreds of thousands of people dropping dead of these things on ventilators all the time //)

or they are fucking intentionally lying.

If the US didn’t have nuclear weapons, and countries other than 2 that are arguably *worse* than the US were around to sweep in as a replacement super power… I’d say “let it die, I’m going to Canada”, but we can’t let a nation of these fucking evil morons have nuclear weapons.

Negligent homicide.

And is this a sort of Viking-style “stand your ground” thing starting where you go to someone else’s place and “stand your ground” there?

The Portland Police should have, and probably do, know better than to just let this stuff go. Their leadership and maybe rank and file might be viewing these asshats as allies, but giving them double standard special treatment and protecting them from the citizens of the city rather than vice-versa is simply going to convince a lot more people that the department and associated union need to be completely removed and rebuilt from the ground up.

Presumably this will lead to a number of civil lawsuits as well against whomever organized this piece of stupidity. Assuming they can be identified.

Of course, I know it’d be foolish to discount the herculean mental gymnastics the MAGAts are capable of. They are stubbornly resistant to facts and truth; it’s an almost impressive feat of real-life Orwellian doublethink. I should add that Dave is wrong in the first post. It is definitely a gun shot. With the shot spacing and the smoke, I’m guessing that the weapon is probably a revolver.

Here come the big layoffs - and just in time for the election.

American Airlines, barely airborne, is preparing to lay off 19,000 workers on October 1. In a letter to employees, CEO Doug Parker pointed out that an aid package for airlines Congress passed in March assumed the coronavirus pandemic would be under control by September. “That is obviously not the case,” he said.

Delta, for its part, is planning to lay off more than 1,900 pilots. “We are six months into this pandemic and only 25% of our revenues have been recovered,” a top executive explained to employees recently. “Unfortunately, we see few catalysts over the next six months to meaningfully change this trajectory.”

Coca-Cola, struggling with lost sales from closed restaurants, said this week it’s cutting 4,000 jobs through buyouts and layoffs. Salesforce said on August 26 it’s cutting 1,000 jobs. Thousands of smaller companies and other organizations are throwing in the towel and starting to slash staff permanently. This, of course, comes on top of the 13 million jobs that have been eliminated since February, raising the unemployment rate from 3.5% to 10.2%.

More large layoff announcements are probably coming. Trump is touting an economic recovery, but if big companies with access to all necessary financing can’t keep payrolls intact, the hole might be getting deeper rather than shallower. This week’s Trump-o-meter reads SAD, the lowest rating.

The problem is, Trump cultists (and looking at Delta and Coca-Cola, their headquarters are in Georgia) are so indoctrinated that no matter what happens to them, they will always blame Democrats. This is why partisan politics in America is so fucked up - one party accepts responsibility and plays with honor, by the rules; one party literally blames everything on the other party no matter what and brazenly cheats just to maintain power.

The illusion that the pandemic has “ended” and things are returning to “normal” is breaking down. Now that people have had their summer fun, look for self-quarantines to resume and the resulting economic carnage to settle back in.

The unusual move is a sign of respect from the studio behind the Marvel movie that brought Boseman his greatest fame and pop culture impact. The respected actor died Friday at the age of 43 after privately battling colon cancer for four years.

This is the part that makes me want to puke:

The Give Send Go campaign for Rittenhouse, titled “Raise money for Kyle Rittenhouse Legal Defense,” contains a statement reading, “Kyle Rittenhouse just defended himself from a brutal attack by multiple members of the far-leftist group ANTIFA – the experience was undoubtedly a brutal one, as he was forced to take two lives to defend his own. Now, Kyle is being unfairly charged with murder 1, by a DA who seems determined only to capitalize on the political angle of the situation. The situation was clearly self-defense, and Kyle and his family will undoubtedly need money to pay for the legal fees. Let’s give back to someone who bravely tried to defend his community.

Indeed. The victims were Kenoshans. Kyle isn’t from their state let only county or town. He went there intending to shoot people. And I’m optimistic that he will be convicted or forced to plead guilty to the charges.

Thanks to those of you who are bringing us news about what’s going on in Portland. It should be obvious to anyone paying attention that the police is composed of White Supremacists. The Portland City Council needs to reign them in. They work for the public and should act accordingly instead of acting like protectors of Neo Nazis.

Now on the few occasions when I’ve needed to shop, I’ve been asked multiple times (and for the first times ever) if I qualify for the senior discount.

Trying to decide if that means I should shave or keep the beard.

And I qualified for the senior discount years ago. ;-)

re: #54 Jack Burton

Something like three hundred million people have twitter accounts. In the world. If you look to it to be representative of anything,… well, you shouldn’t.

People who are the type to follow DT are oblivious to what happens until it happens to them. This is happening to them.

Well we know the CDC has been kneecapped and many states are getting, how shall we say, “creative” with how they report Covid deaths (since there are no nationwide guidelines) so this is probably a side effect from that I.e significantly distorted data not showing the real picture.

It’s a very white driven narrative. It’s why I try to point out to people who complain about representing minorities of any kind that the white cis gender experience has for long been the default in how popular culture defined itself. There were exceptions of course. That’s why they’re called exceptions.

The “manual” is not metaphorical. It is, literally a manual describing these types of events and the potential responses to those events.

That manual is FM3-24, a copy of which is freely available to the public here:

To be fair, I think it’ll be largely confined to relatively small and sporadic incidents. Maybe a couple OKC-type incidents in there as well, but for the most part, nothing like an all-out uprising.

And as others have noted, if Trump is defeated resoundingly enough (an electoral curb-stomping), that will serve to demoralize a good many of his fanatics.

I had the horrible and belated realization that Trump’s rhetoric concerning violence being the norm in “Biden’s America” is him signaling to his frothing violent followers that they should riot when he loses, thus forcing Biden to deal with a literal insurgency at the beginning of his presidency.

It’s also an attempt to write the beginning of Biden’s presidency as starting right now. It’s not Trump’s fault that he openly incites violence, it’s Biden’s fault for wanting to stop it.

re: #243 🌹UOJB!

Do Minnesota Republicans still call themselves the “Independent Republican Party”?

Per Wikipedia:

The Independent-Republicans of Minnesota (I-R) was the name of the party from November 15, 1975 until September 23, 1995. The name change was made because the “Republican” name was damaged by the Watergate Scandal. Polls conducted in the early-mid-1970s indicated people in Minnesota were more likely to vote for a candidate who identified as an “Independent” versus a “Republican”. During that time, the state party became more dependent on grassroots fundraising and eventually went bankrupt.[citation needed] After the National party pumped money into the party, in the early-mid-1980s, their image and base began turning more conservative. During this time the party had both US Senate seats and briefly held control of the state House of Representatives. By 1994, the grassroots had turned socially more conservative, and changed the name back in 1995. Attempts to drop the term “Independent” had been defeated in 1989, 1991 and 1993.

The only two republicans I ever voted for were during this period: Governor Arne Carlson, and Senator Dave Durenberger. Durenberger was censured by the senate for not reporting some book-based income, but he was very good on health care. Both of these guys are endorsing Biden now.

Still no more data on the Patriot Prick getting murdered. I heard rumors about the shooter, not corroborated. The only thing I do know is there was a street confrontation between a few people. I do see a blast of clouded smoke or spray then a gunshot and what appears to be distinct gunshot smoke: looks like a sprayed cloud of mace one instant before the gunshots which produced more smoke/spray.

The victim did have on a ‘Think Blue Line’ patch on his leg and was in military cosplay gear, and what looked like a Patriot Prayer ball cap (unconfirmed, alleged).

That’s all I know.

This is the part that says it all:

In a letter to employees, CEO Doug Parker pointed out that an aid package for airlines Congress passed in March assumed the coronavirus pandemic would be under control by September. “That is obviously not the case,” he said.

The illusion that the pandemic has “ended” and things are returning to “normal” is breaking down. Now that people have had their summer fun, look for self-quarantines to resume and the resulting economic carnage to settle back in.

There’s something similar happening in the UK, but thankfully not as bad because, as iffy as the UK government response has been, at least the spread of COVID has been put under enough control for enough easing of lockdown for enough return of normality so that it isn’t as bad.

Add to that the (Generally, far better) response from the devolved governments, (In Northern Ireland, Wales, and my native Scotland) it means that schools have been able to re-open (With restrictions), you can go into shops or get a haircut (Although you have to wear a mask), and I’ve been able to return to work. (From home.) It’s mostly been sectors where you can’t work from home, or sectors that depended on people turning up in the period between March and now, that have been badly affected by job losses.

Someone I used to house-share with, Kenny was an active-service British Army squaddie. He had been a Blue Helmet UNPROFOR during the Serb-Croat faceoff in the FY and had some lovely stories to tell. As a Fusilier he got detailed to a EOD squad going around and recovering artillery ammo and other big-bang items from the eighteen different sides in the still-simmering conflict. One time his squad did a surprise inspection of a Serb-held police station following a tipoff. After the AFV parked outside pointed its 30mm cannon at the station’s windows the police officers inside graciously allowed Kenny and co. in to have a look around.

Their opinion, after they backed slowly out of the station’s cell block was “We’re going to need a bigger truck. Actually we’re going to need several big trucks.” The cells were filled, floor to ceiling with transport crates full of anti-tank mines, the sort that could flip a Main Battle Tank upside down and toss it into the next county. If they had gone off in the police station it would have razed the little town around it.

By the middle of 1970 many leaders of the anti war movement had come to believe that tactics of mass marches that had been used during the past six years would not end the war, and that more aggressive actions were needed. Rennie Davis of the People’s Coalition for Peace and Justice and Jerry Coffin of the War Resisters League began planning the actions; later in 1970 Michael Lerner joined their number.[3] A group known as the “May Day Tribe”[4] was formed: it was made up of Yippies and others among the more militant members of the anti-war movement. It was decided that small groups of protesters would block major intersections and bridges in the capital, under the slogan, “If the government won’t stop the war, we’ll stop the government.”

[…]

Next several days
On Tuesday, May 4, another 2,000 people were arrested at a sit-in outside the headquarters of the Justice Department. On Wednesday, May 5, 1,200 more people were arrested at a legal rally on the steps of the U.S. Capitol, bringing the total to 12,614 people, making this the largest mass arrest in U.S. history

A couple years later, the US got out of Vietnam. Take the long view.

It’s easier for me to take the long view, because my husband helped organize the events in DC in May, 1971, and he persists to this day.

I missed the nuance of this and am sloppy with it. What’s the deal with Democrat vs Democratic party? So much fuckery and bad faith angles at play it’s sometimes hard to keep up.

Whenever our brother calls it the Democrat Party, I tell him that I don’t know what he’s talking about until he finally uses the proper name. I believe there are two reasons for this usage (1) The GOP doesn’t want anyone to associate the party with democratic principles and (2) Democrat Party puts an emphasis on the “rat” and thereby feeds into their efforts to portray Democrats as “rats”. I correct anyone who uses that term..

If he had lived another 50 years, he may have transformed this collection of republics into a single nation because under him the next generation was beginning to intermarry and accept this identity. Unfortunately, when he died, one of his heirs was a rabid Serb who detested the other nationalities and religions within the nation and wanted to retain power instead of following Tito’s vision.

It’s the Democratic-NonPartisan League in North Dakota. The NPL is the reason the Bank of North Dakota exists - the only state-owned bank in the country. The farmers in ND felt exploited by the Minneapolis bankers and grain and mill elevator operators. It also led to ND seceding from the Union in 1934 (almost, anyway).
