While McConnell and Schumer stay locked in a high-stakes staring contest over the infrastructure bills and America’s debt ceiling, The Vatican made headlines by announcing that all employees must be vaccinated, without leaving room for exemptions on religious grounds. #Colbert #Comedy #Monologue

I fear the Kerensky Provisional Government is a better analogy.

The Kerensky Provisional Government is a better analogy.

The idea is to let chaos reign for a while so people will welcome a strong leader to restore order.

i think immigration is a mixed bag and still may come out as a positive once all the 45 holdouts in ICE and Homeland are shown the door. Much of the issues that we have ongoing in that arena are the continuation of shitty policy from shitty people until they can be replaced by someone who is compassionate and invested in allowing a path for people to seek the opportunity that the US offers.

Also from last thread:

I am still parsing out the Lewandowski affair.

But I my first take is to agree with Teddy’s Person. That people are apparently not as important to the GQP as money.

I suspect that the ladies here are more familiar with this kind of assholery, but how the Ms Odom was treated by both Lewandowski and by everybody else (in not immediately ejecting Lewandowski) seems to make quite a regressive statement on gender.

I also wonder what the donor will conclude his $100k bought him in the GQP.

Senate Democrats and Republicans on Thursday approved a measure to fund the government into early December, putting lawmakers one step close toward staving off a shutdown that is set to occur after midnight.

One reason I gave up talk radio. As I asked the producer one day near the end, “Has our audience always been a bunch of goofballs?”
A much better known and more experienced host had once told me that I could not make the big time unless I talked down to the audience. I finally concluded that he was right.

Keep doing this shit every three months, and excoriate Republican obstruction at every turn. Turn every news conference into a discussion of how they’re blocking because they’re afraid of the January 6 prosecutions reaching their doorsteps. Keep that in the forefront. Put pressure on the DOJ to prosecute everyone involved. Fast track the Sex Trafficking trial against Gaetz. Get the NY DA to prosecute Trump family. Then I worked in Russia, where faith healers came on the TV and instructed their followers to put tubs of water on top of the TV. Then they would raise their hands to the air and “bless” the water with their magical holy power.

My translator told me that all the babushkas in Russia did this, and as a result, the water would like as not slosh around and short out the TVs. So they had to make TVs there with waterproof tops - which then caused them to overheat and catch on fire.

Yes — Gabby Petito will show up on SVU, but others, such as variations on the Jan 6 insurrection, belong more naturally to a different program.

Yay! A friend texted me yesterday that NBC is bringing back the original L&O. Given that so many “ripped from the headline” stories cannot fit into an SVU narrative, this is a reason for celebration. Yes — Gabby Petito will show up on SVU, but others, such as variations on the Jan 6 insurrection, belong more naturally to a different program.

FBI Most Wanted and FBI both had 1/6 content on Tuesday.

I think the debt ceiling was not part of this right, so that still needs to be addressed by the middle of October.

That’s right. This avoids a shutdown at midnight tonight but the debt ceiling still needs to be raised for funding to continue after December 3.

The back-to-back votes by the Senate and then the House will help avert one crisis, but just delay another as the political parties dig in on a dispute over how to raise the government’s borrowing cap before the United States risks a potentially catastrophic default.

And a maintenance nightmare right off the bat.

A nonprofit’s restoration efforts underway for the last several years folded recently, and the ship is now up for grabs for just under $1 million.

Rob McMahon of Pinnacle Marine Corporation is brokering the Julia Belle Swain’s sale. He said it’s undergone about $2.6 million in renovations, but still needs another $900,000 or so of investments to become fully waterworthy again.

“There’s a great structure there right now for someone to come in, finish off the renovation, and have a great opportunity to run one of the last steamboats in the country,” he said.

Friends live on a boat, a hundred-year-old steel-hulled Dutch tjalk parked on a canal in West London. Every two years they have to get it hauled out and the hull stripped back and coated with approved non-biotoxic non-fouling paint, all 90 square metres of it. The engine gearbox rebuild a decade ago cost them the thick end of five thousand bucks. They got a replacement “original” mast for a mere eight hundred Euros but with a thousand Euros shipping charge. The kitchen still isn’t complete thirty years after they bought it, the toilet is… let’s not go there, shall we?

Getting this rear-wheel paddlesteamer river-worthy will cost “only” another 900,000 bucks, they say. Keeping her in good condition will cost a lot more over the following years and decades, endless expense.

There’s drunk, and then there’s this guy.

Search and rescue teams in Turkey were looking in the Bursa region for a man who was reported missing.

According to Turkish news channel NTV, once people started calling out Mutlu’s name, he came forward and asked, “Who are we looking for? I’m here.”

It is unclear how the 50-year-old came across his own search party, how his friends were unaware their pal was in their midst, or just how wasted Mutlu was, but it’s a happy ending regardless.

I was fortunate to learn from the costly experience of others. I’m fascinated with ships, boats, and their history but I have never seriously considered having one of my own. I own a plane and a Rolls-Royce (usually drive a Toyota though), but I do not own a boat. This is quite aside from the lack of a worthwhile place to put one around here. The big artificial lakes like Lake Granbury seem to exert a magnetic attraction on the yokel gentry though. The shores of these giant mudholes are lined with mcmansions even uglier than the norm, and festooned with docks for miniature super-yachts like the ones that featured in the farcical Battle of Lake Travis last year.

Growing up on the west side of Cincinnati, overlooking the Ohio River, I loved the calliope on the Delta Queen!
We could hear it heading up and down river for ages before it steamed on by.

Oh, and BTW, I also adore bagpipes (and the kilted guys who play them).

Fight me.

re: #139 Backwoods_Sleuth

do you have any control over how your 401K is invested?

Some. I just want to move it someplace that isn’t going to overly effected by a market collapse. Same reason I kept money back when the lock down went into effect & was furloughed. Unfortunately, a lot of people I know didn’t have that reserve and were hurt bad. I don’t want to join their ranks if I can avoid it.

No matter where you move it, a market collapse will affect it. How bad the fallout will be depends on how the funds are invested.
Go for safe as opposed to speculative. Returns on safe investments will stay steadier. Speculative, though there is the prospect of phenomenal returns, can disappear in a flash.
And yes, those are actual investment categories.

There were a couple calliopes in Pittsburgh, especially on the barge where the American Wind Symphony gave concerts. And I still have the practice chanter the kids gave me, complete with instruction DVD.

That’s right. This avoids a shutdown at midnight tonight but the debt ceiling still needs to be raised for funding to continue after December 3.

My uncle was a Pgh fireman, fought the fire on the Island Queen (an actual side-wheeler). I was only about 3, don’t know if it had a calliope.

As a child, I lived in Quincy, Il for three years. Quincy is on the Mississippi and not far from Hannibal, MO. We sometimes picnicked by the river, but my dad was far more interested in seeing the locks in operation than seeing the riverboat. We did organize a family reunion there once so that we could celebrate my grandmother’s brother’s 100th birthday on a riverboat and allow him to pull the cord on the horn (not a calliope).

On our cross-country bicycle trip, Mr. w and I were escorted out of Quincy by the police.

We had inquired whether it would be dangerous to cycle across the narrowish bridge. Would the drivers take care? They did. Nobody passed us in our direction.

We spent a few days in Hannibal.

Still wondering if I should pull 50% or more out of my 401K before the Dec. deadline That money is what I’m expecting to live on for the next few years until I can start drawing SS. I don’t want to lose it the rethugs actually manage to shut down the Government.

How is the money invested? Does it offer a money-market type fund as an option? That way you don’t have to withdraw funds but just transfer some around.

This reminds me of a neo-Daoist in 200s CE China who was causing lots of social concern with his drunken behavior and refusal to dress properly. When the local officials came to criticize him for public nudity the still naked Daoist said something like ‘this house is my shirt and this room is my pants; what are you gentlemen doing in my pants?’
