Got an appointment for a booster tomorrow. I noticed the email from Kaiser popup on my phone about them opening up appointments for people who qualify and got the Moderna vaccination. I immediately set up an appointment from my phone while I was in the grocery store.

So that takes one bundle of stress off of my “looking for a new job in the age of COVID” stress pile.

So, I watched Dune on my home system last week. First time the sound was muddy and had hard time hearing stuff. Turns out that my 20+ year old Sony 5.1 system was dying. It died a long death shortly thereafter.

Bought a new Samsung sound bar - a Dolby atmos capable one that goes with my Samsung tv.

The difference was… amazing. I haven’t heard that home system rumble in years.

Sometimes it takes sound to make a movie. Dune is still a flawed movie, but the improved sound quality definitely helps the overall experience. That said, Dune is still half a movie.

Too bad Part 2 isn’t scheduled for theaters till October 2023 AND it won’t be simultaneously released for streaming on HBO Max; of course, the latter plan may depend on the vagaries of the pandemic.

re: #9 William Lewis

Interesting question. I guess that it depends upon what is intended to be said y the picture.

Reading the comments and the range of thoughtful observations, I begin to understand why others made choices that I didn’t. And I greatly appreciate that.

For myself, I see the colors as very muted, so I would go for the B&W in order to see the forest structure as a whole.

But as others point out, some of the context and other information, such as the leaves in front being dried and brown thus giving time of season, is lost.

I find the different perspectives quite interesting.

‘Hooker’ is a player position on a Rugby team.

‘Fanny’ apparently refers to a different part of the anatomy in England than it does in the US.

“Put the purse in the bag” in England translates in American English to “Put the wallet in the purse”.

Fortunately, nobody got their knickers in a knot or spit the dummy.

I think that I may turn off their notifications. Assuming that is possible.

BTW: On the “car jacikng at wegmans”… Apparently two guys got into into an argument in a grocery store parking lot and one pulled a gun on the other and shot him (non-fatally).

My response:

To whom it may concern:

Unpaid overtime is “the norm” for workaholics, people whose lives are unraveling, and clueless micro-managers who are trying to find a way to increase the productivity of a team without adding any headcount. I may be “new to this industry”, and I may have been born at night, but news flash: It wasn’t last night. Now then, as to your suggestion that I am not a team player for choosing not to sacrifice hours of my life to do the job that I get paid to do the rest of the time: I would ask if I, personally, am under-performing in such a way as to be detrimental to our deadline. If that is the case, then I apologize, and I will take my leave in two weeks’ time to seek another opportunity with more room for early growth. If it is not, then I would suggest that your deadlines are unreasonable; that you should perhaps listen to your team when they tell you that your deadlines are unreasonable; and you have no more than two weeks in which to figure out how to fix an even bigger problem, because my official reply to your request is to tell you to fuck off.

Sincerely yours,
Name

Ding, ding, ding!

The “Executive” who sent the e-mail is an ignorant idiot and should be nowhere near any management position.

But the bigger problem is the disconnect between Benefits promised and Benefits used.

If I accept a position that allows X benefit, I expect to be able to access X benefit.

If I get a snotgram from a functionally illiterate Executive maroon taking me to task for using an agreed-upon contractual benefit, it’s time to go to the State Workforce Commission and sue the bastages.

Earlier today I commented on a Twitter thread about Elon Musk complaining about paying too much in taxes. The same day there’s a report that he’s about to become the world’s first trillionaire.

So when someone claimed that he pays 53% and rising in taxes, I scoffed at it and pointed out Peter Thiel’s scam where he used his Roth IRA to buy $5 billion in PayPal stock options. Now up to half-a-dozen people have chimed in to “school” me that Roth IRAs are after-tax dollars, as if that’s not the whole point of why Thiel’s perfidy is so egregious.

So here’s the link I’ve posted a dozen times on the thread. These billionaire fanbois are just unteachable.

re: #105 gwangung

Yeah, well the constitutionality of it is the kicker. Any guesses how this Supreme Court would rule on it?

Almost certainly against, and the reasoning would be relatively good for a RWNJ-favoring SCOTUS decision. The 16th amendment enables an “income tax”. It does not enable a “wealth tax”.

Edited to add: Looking at this a little more, and this tax may be a proposal to tax unrealized capital gains. If so, it’s an income tax, not a wealth tax. That deals with the constitutional issue (assuming an honest court), but it would still have to be implemented pretty carefully to avoid splash damage.

A wealth tax is not an income tax. In an income tax, you pay a fraction of your income (however defined). For a wealth tax, you pay a fraction of your wealth, or a fraction of the value of property owned. Property tax on real estate is the commonest example of a wealth tax in the US.

This is kind of spectacular. The Federal Trade Commission sent out a Notice of Penalty Offenses to 1,100 companies today. Here’s a news article but it has the emphasis in the wrong place, IMHO. It’s not so much that Uber, Lyft, and Amazon got called out, but that dozens and dozens of multi-level marketing scams got letters as well!

The Federal Trade Commission put more than 1,100 companies on notice Tuesday that it will aggressively target them if they make misleading representations concerning money-making opportunities.

The FTC sent the notice to many of the most high-profile gig-economy companies in the nation including Uber Technologies Inc. UBER, +0.66%, Lyft Inc. LYFT, -1.21%, several leading multi-level marketing firms and even amazon.com Inc. AMZN, +1.68%

“Preying on consumers and workers with bogus promises of big earnings should never be profitable,” said Samuel Levine, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, in a statement. “Today’s announcement helps ensure that companies that cheat struggling Americans will pay a heavy price.”

The FTC stressed in its announcement that a recipient’s presence on the list of notified companies “does not in any way suggest that it has engaged in deceptive or unfair conduct.”

Federal laws bar companies from making false, misleading or deceptive representations regarding the earnings that can be expected from a money-making opportunity, including misleading statements about whether it is likely that a participant will make a profit or that an advertised profit is typical.

The FTC can fine companies more than $43,000 per violation if they are found to have knowingly violated the law.

Here’s the FTC’s own press release: ftc.gov

Here’s the page the FTC has for the letter and the list of 1,100 companies can be found there as well :

This has been the outstanding issue with stocks: you don’t pay taxes on unrealized gains nor do you get reductions in taxes based on unrealized losses. Stocks that explode in value can also eventually contract to nothing, as the unfortunate shareholders in Enron discovered when the company collapsed. Handling this has to be very complicated, but having a huge increase in estate taxes for the wealthiest may be a better route especially if you can prevent them from shielding their wealth from these taxes.

Instead of trying to value unrealized gains…
They could try and tax only the leveraged assets…
The valuation is mostly objective it has to be agreed upon to underwrite the loans

So it’s a smaller piece overall.

A year hence, the most-asked questions are “Do you have weekly rates?” and “Do you all require a deposit?”

In fact, last week I was asked (paraphrased) “How much for one of your studio apartments for a month?”

Crap I get at my house.

Churches everywhere are facing declining membership, and are becoming more aggressive in advertising to entice people in.

Gallup’s most recent poll on church membership shows for the first time ever in the USA the number is less than 50%.

Even military chapels are not immune.

Attendance dwindles at Joint Base Charleston’s chapel (Stars & Stripes)

Protestant worship services at Joint Base Charleston, SC are in danger of being cut due to low attendance and lack of pastors. For now the Roman Catholic service is safe, though the military also has a shortage of priests. In the case of the Charleston chapel, the priest is a contractor for the base. The Catholic Church itself is paying up to half the amount of a priest’s seminary costs if they will become a chaplain.

An average of 50 people make up the Sunday congregation at the Protestant worship service. But attendees like Vandawaker and Hoyt are worried their weekly trip to the base may come to an end.

Lt. Col. Joel Kornegay, the senior chaplain at Joint Base Charleston, has told the congregants the number of military retirees attending has dwindled significantly over the years and there are too few active-duty airmen in attendance each week.

“We have seen roughly a 30 percent drop in attendance in our Sunday morning Protestant worship service,” Kornegay said in a statement.

Kornegay has told longtime churchgoers that participation needs to rise to warrant keeping the service time on the schedule. Some of those who have spent their lives in the church are upset at the prospect of losing it.

It’s been sleeting here since late afternoon. The sleet finally changed over to rain as it warmed up a little here.

The Atlantic 5-Day Graphical Tropical Outlook shows that Summer and Autumn weather isn’t quite over there yet.

A non-tropical low with storm-force winds about one hundred miles southeast of Cape Cod is moving southwest, then expected to move east over the Gulf Stream. It has a medium chance of developing into a tropical storm within five days.

LONDON —

A British court will consider this week whether Julian Assange, founder of the Wikileaks website, can be extradited to the United States on charges of hacking and theft. The two-day hearing is scheduled to begin Wednesday in London’s high court.

U.S. prosecutors appealed a British district court verdict from January, which ruled that Assange should not be extradited because it was possible he could commit suicide in a maximum-security U.S. prison.

That premise will be challenged by prosecutors, said lawyer Nick Vamos, a former head of extradition at Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service, now a partner at London-based law firm Peters & Peters.

“What the U.S. government (has) now done is come forward with a specific assurance about exactly how, where and in what condition he will be detained. So, provided his medical condition and his risk of suicide hasn’t changed, then you would assume that the U.S. government (has) met the test that the district judge in the first judgment set them,” Vamos told VOA.

Other developments since the January ruling could affect the case. Sigurdur Thordarson, a former Wikileaks insider-turned-FBI informant, has said he fabricated evidence used by the prosecution.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Air Force 1st Lt. Jack Livingston eliminated a senior al-Qaida leader with his Reaper drone while simultaneously letting his parents know that their newest grandchild has a dong this week.

Seconds after the 500-lb. JDAM loosed by the Reaper slammed into the terrorist’s compact car half a world away in rebel-held northwest Syria, Livingston’s proud parents whooped with joy as a blue mushroom cloud roiled skyward on the display screen.

“It’s a boy, Ma!” said Livingston as his mother hugged him, while his fellow airmen at the 174th Attack Wing command center at Hancock Field Air National Guard Base, alternated between getting confirmation of the kill and congratulating Livingston for not pulling out of the former exotic dancer at the Cinnamon Bobcat just outside the main gate.

Personal responsibility, how does it work?

Man uses toddler to try ducking DUI (Gillette, Wyo. News Record, more at the link):

A 39-year-old man tried getting out of a drunken driving arrest Saturday by claiming that his 4-year-old son was the one driving.

Deputies first responded to an address on Stone Place Loop for the report of a fight between the 39-year-old man and a woman. When they arrived, she said that he drove off in his white Ford pickup truck with Oklahoma plates.

He was eventually spotted and pulled over near Wilson Way, where he got out of the car along with his two sons, 4 and 15, said Sheriff’s Office Lt. Paul Pownall.

Although he had been drinking, he said that his 4-year-old son was sitting on his lap and the one who was actually driving.

Well, that was fun. Just got a call from “Ethan” saying he’s from the corporate office and there’s an important package arriving from FedEx today…in the next 25-45 minutes. Says he’s on the line with my manager (asks for her name, which is funny if he called her/she called him) and that I’d be getting a call from FedEx regarding a package with “important documents” that include an employee handbook (spoiler: You can download the handbook on the corporate website).

So I speak with the operator from “FedEx” who insists that the package is close to $5000 (HA!) but because it’s an international delivery they couldn’t accept the check my boss wrote for it (HAHA!) and so “Ethan” and my boss gotta be here with cash in hand when the driver arrives (HAHAHA!). “Ethan” asks if there’s a way to get a 2hr extension as he’s an hour behind the delivery driver, to which the operator says they’re gonna need half of the payment wired to them. At which point “Ethan” asks me how much money I have access to (my boss would have let him know the till only ever holds $250) and that she says there’s an envelope with $900+ on her desk in the office (which she would have told him I don’t have access to).

At that point I called the bluff, told him that if this on the level then he needs to have my boss contact me to tell me it’s legit, and that she can handle the cash matters since she lives less than 10 minutes from here. At which point he got irate and the jovial attitude he’d displayed earlier drops, telling me I was going to be in so much trouble when he gets here in an hour. Well, if he’s real and this was all true, then I can tell him that I’ve heard so many scams that I have every reason to be suspicious. But my boss hasn’t called me in the last 20 minutes, so I feel confident that “Ethan” is never going to show.

It’s the sort of scam that probably works great when the mark is young and inexperienced, since they’re likely to go along with it out of fear that they could get disciplined or fired for not obeying their “boss.” Especially if they’re not used to the rhythms of the business and don’t know when things like deliveries are done. There’s nothing corporate could send us (least of all paperwork) that would be sent internationally and need to be delivered at 5am EST.

India’s government sent a takedown notice to Twitter over a year-old tweet in which Atheist Republic was promoting their merchandise.

Most of Atheist Republic’s leaders have been banned from Twitter over complaints by India’s government, though their main account is still up.

In the letter, Twitter says they value the free speech rights of their users.

India is still trying to get their Michigan member extradited via the courts to India to stand trial for blasphemy for her “sexy Kali” art.

Or they just play the numbers: Atheists are a tiny minority of the world’s population, with estimates ranging between 200 and 240 million, with most in Russia and China (and China blocks Twitter anyway).

They’re usually reading from a script and moving fast in order to prevent you from having time to think about all the things that are wrong with the call. So when you give them an answer that doesn’t fit into the script, they default to belligerence in order to force your compliance. When you don’t fall back into the script, they realize the jig is up and usually give up. Sometimes they just hang up, sometimes they curse a blue streak and then hang up.

Far more scary than the blasphemy noise:

Police in Indian-controlled Kashmir are investigating students and staff at two medical colleges under a harsh anti-terror law for celebrating India’s loss to archrival Pakistan in a T20 World Cup cricket game, officials said Tuesday.

Police said some students and staff at the government-run colleges cheered and shouted pro-Pakistan slogans during the match Sunday night, calling it “anti-national” activity.

Pakistan crushed India by 10 wickets for its first-ever victory against its archrival in a T20 World Cup game in Dubai. Minutes after Pakistan won the match, hundreds of people in Kashmir danced in the streets, lit firecrackers and chanted “Long live Pakistan” while seeking the end of India’s rule over the disputed region.

Kashmir could charge those who celebrated India’s cricket loss under anti-terror law

My company, a defense contractor, is considering allowing religious exemptions. There are way too many high up at my company who were actually opposed to a mandate for them to really require everyone to do the right thing.

It still fascinates me that my company, whose majority income is the federal government, opposes said government. But most of them are whites and they feel entitled.

That’s probably the main idea.

IMO, the religious exemption should be denied if:

1) The specific religious organization with which the individual associates has not, at the top leadership level, issued a specific demand that believers not get the vaccine; OR
2) If the exemption is due to “deeply held personal beliefs”, the person does not demonstrate consistency of deeply held personal beliefs, by refusing to sign a waiver indicating that they are foregoing the use of other medicines or medical procedures which also match the description of their deeply held personal belief.

That would take care of most of it; I think the only religious organization to issue a top-level anti-vaccine mandate is Christian Science, and at least they’re consistent about it.

And that’s the problem: The instant you have the federal government or its courts deciding what is a valid religious belief, you no longer have freedom of religion. The first amendment is out the window.

What about unorganised religions, such as Wicca or Islam?

I don’t see a reason to exempt people for ‘deeply held personal beliefs’ at all. You might have a deeply held personal belief that a 14 year old can agree to sex with you, but that doesn’t exempt you from the law of the land or allow you to ignore the existence of the commons.

Exactly. Religions must comport to the laws of a secular society, and that society must apply the law evenly to all religions.

Otherwise, when you get religious people on courts, they can do things like exempt “closely held corporations” from requiring contraceptive coverage in employer-provided health insurance.

Most of the people now claiming religious belief exemptions had no such opposition when vaccinating against measles, mumps, tetanus, polio, smallpox, or all of the other required vaccinations. Even dumbass Kyrie Irving was required to vaccinate for all of those as a condition of attending college in North Carolina at Duke. State law in fact requires vaccinations to attend college.

sort of related / stuff you dont know until you do

we take readings on the pond once a month
- ph
- nitrites
- ammonia
- phosphates

the ph was constantly on the high side of normal
the other three were perfect - nearly zero

we still cant get the ph down

then we learned, from reading, not from experience, that time of day matters

the algae are way more active in the sun and heat, so the ph goes up

draw a sample before sunup and its much more normal
so we stopped worrying and adjusted the timing

also, our fish guy noted the obvious:
no fish have died (except for being eaten)
and they are happily breeding just fine
so the conditions are ok

we want more water clarity so we’re still battling algae
that means more plants and shade which takes time and patience.

One of the wingnut arguments against Islam is it’s political ideology and not religious ideology (which doesn’t matter because both are protected by the I Amendment anyway).

Our house built in 1830 had wooden gutters. Dad and I had to apply linseed oil twice a year to keep them from cracking. Cleaning those gutters from maple & chestnut leaves…and the buckeyes…

After Dad died and Wells Fargo seized the house they did a major remodeling and replaced the gutters with aluminum ones. The interior was completely redone as well. They still lost money on the deal…

It’s on the market again WAY OVERPRICED in an economically dead area.

re: #304 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)

Edging over into the “rebellion for the sake of rebellion” behavior set. Rebel without a cause, believer in white privilege (because reasons) and flier of Confederate Battle Flag without having clue of what the symbolism of said flag actually is.

I am absolutely confident that most who fly the flag know exactly what they are doing; they support the Confederacy and would have fought for it during the Civil War.

Poke at a person who’s projecting Trump onto Biden, and see a fascist out themselves.
This started with a post claiming that Biden only cares about himself, and that Trump loves the country.

In some cities, like Chicago, a substantial portion of police and firefighters are holding firm; we’ll see what happens if they discover that their jobs are really on the line.

Cops who refuse to vaccinate should not be given a chance to smarten up at the last moment. We’re forced to interact with cops, and need a lot fewer idiots on the force.

Big G will forgive any sin, but only if you renounce sin and promise not to do it again.

That is not the case with people who allow things like abortions and gay marriage and socilized medicine and all those other things that are an abdomination to Free Market Jeebus

Walker, now 59, has at times been open about his long struggle with mental illness, writing at length in a 2008 book about being diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder, once known as multiple personality disorder. But it’s unclear how he would discuss these events as a candidate.

I consider my clinical depression disqualifying for a leadership position, but one of this guy’s personalities seems to think a person with DID should be a leader.

He understands that controlling local councils and politics is key to establishing an incontrovertible Power Base

And this is what the Religious Right has been striving to do since Reagan: get themselves and their people insinuated into every nook and cranny of public administration, the military, education, sports, etc.

Needless to say, they have been less successful with popular culture (outside Top 40 country)

Oh Geez, you suddenly reminded me that a farm up the road has a giant “DR. SCOTT JENSEN FOR MINNESOTA GOVERNOR” sign up on the side of it. Dr. Scott Jensen is one of the anti-vaxx, COVID-denier asshats who started promoting the conspiracy early in the pandemic that the whole thing was overblown because there was no way we could know the true infection rate due to lack of testing, therefore a lot more people were exposed than previously thought so all the government’s statistics were lies.

re: #302 lawhawk

Most of the people now claiming religious belief exemptions had no such opposition when vaccinating against measles, mumps, tetanus, polio, smallpox, or all of the other required vaccinations. Even dumbass Kyrie Irving was required to vaccinate for all of those as a condition of attending college in North Carolina at Duke. State law in fact requires vaccinations to attend college.

None of this is deeply held belief. It’s a political stance based on junk science, woo, and mostly opposition to Biden.

My “I swear I’m independent despite constantly voting straight GOP every time” buddy claimed to me one time that he’s Buddhist. I had known him for years at that point and not once in that time had he ever shown the slightest inkling towards anything spiritual.

To this day, I’m convinced that he felt as a self-identifying conservative, he needed to declare some sort of religion to fit in the group. Saying he believed in God and was a Christian wouldn’t work because even the laziest Christian can usually spot someone faking it.

Plus, his mom was hyper religious, so I’m guessing there was some sort of tension wi that that.

Saying he was a Buddhist is a bit more bullet proof because most of his friends and family know nothing about Buddhism, so they can’t easily call him out on the spot.

The Republicans whining about this memo are well aware that it’s about threats of violence, not shutting down dissent. They’re tacitly, consciously giving their permission for the threats to continue.

Not that it accomplishes anything, I have repeatedly told the Trumpster FB fanatic that whenever she “yells” about parents being persecuted for their views on school programs, rather then their threats of violence. These people are truly dangerous and toxic to our survival as a nation — both the Republicans in government and the widespread Goebbels news networks that support them.

They’re trying to reassure themselves that they aren’t going to hell. While still being all superior to everyone else. While dying. And then there will be a go fund me page for the family using Jesus as part of the plea to help pay medical bills or save the household from total ruin.

I really wish there was an escape from these people.
