It’s a question that resists all attempts to answer.

Hi. In today’s episode, we look at what the Forward Party is, who is actually behind them (in addition to Andrew Yang), and why they refuse to have any real policy positions.

Wow, the Japanese government is seriously considering dissolving the corporate existence of the Unification Church, formally known in Japan as the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification. I believe they only got permission to change their name last year (it was very recently).

The novel wrinkle is that the government is saying that violations of the Civil Code are grounds to dissolve the organization, not just criminal actions.

Only two religious groups in Japan have ever been hit with dissolution orders based on the Religious Corporations Act, the AUM Shinrikyo cult, and Myokakuji in Wakayama Prefecture. In both cases, top group officials were facing criminal charges. As for the Unification Church, civil courts have ruled it responsible for illegal activities as an organization. However, there have been no court verdicts recognizing the criminal accountability of the group’s top representatives.

This is not going to happen instantly—this paragraph describes the procedure:

After the probe’s parameters are set, the Cultural Affairs Agency will consult with the culture ministry’s religious corporations council on what exactly to ask the Unification Church and its officials. If the probe confirms that the Unification Church should be disbanded in Japan, a dissolution order request will be filed with the court. If the court approves it, the Unification Church will lose its corporate status and be ineligible for tax and other privileges accorded to religious organizations in the country. The church will not be banned from private activities.

Since the “Family Federation for World Peace and Unification” can fairly be described as a “high demand group,” I’m not sure how this would prevent what the Moonies have been doing in Japan. Basically the Moonies have been using Japanese adherents as a huge cash cow to demand large sums of money from them for ceremonies performed in Korea to remove the heavenly stigma of being Japanese. (Think what Japan did in Korea prior to and during World War II.) The amounts involved are pretty spectacular; the mother of Abe Shinzo’s assassin is alleged to have given $1 million USD to the Moonies for these ceremonies, essentially beggaring the family.

I’m also uncertain how dissolving the corporate status of the Unification Church in Japan is going to deal with their huge influence on the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which is still a problem. In any case, this is an interesting development.

And murders per 100,000 people in Cali is 62% lower than Texas. So much for how open carry makes a State safer.

Yeah, turning federal Legislation over to State governments is always way better than Federal Laws. Like Social Security. Medicare and Medicaid. FEMA. OSHA. Veteran’s pensions. Voting Rights. The ADA act. Title 9. The FDA. The FAA and air flight controllers, and the Federal Highway Safety Commission. The EPA. The federal Mine Safety Act.

So let’s let swivel-eyed loons and chittering drooling goobers from gerrymandered Texas districts pass the laws that determine the lives of 28 million American taxpayers living in Texas.

Even more impressive when one considers that California only has about half of Germany’s population.

And, of course, for all the Republicans’ “Yeah, but…” squawking*, they’ll never take note of the main factor in the Golden State’s economic success: that the CA GOP is an uninfluential minority in state government.

Yeah, but housing costs!

Yeah, that’s the other part to their theological hypocrisy: They insist that a government running a surplus is evidence that taxes are excessively high and need to be cut so that that money can go “back to the taxpayers,” but this only applies if Democrats are the ones running things.

Watch the local news and you’ll quickly understand why. No matter where you live in America, every news hour will lead with criming going on in your local area. And if there’s no crimes worth reporting on, they’ll just repeat stories about crimes that they reported on in previous news hours or run stories about “out of control crime” in your area. If you live in a town where the total number of murders went from 1 last year to 4 this year, get ready for many breathless hours of the “crime wave” threatening your entire way of life.

That is exactly what happens. What local news there is around here is just as deep red as the area itself, so I use online news sources and local NPR. I used to have a dear friend who kept me posted on local crimes and such, but she passed away, and since then, I just don’t know about it. It’s quite calming, really.

The problem has always been there, it’s just more apparent now that alternative forms of media are not limited to the fellow on the street corner handing out copies of small-run indie newspapers. The rise of blogs and social media has really given us a window into the world that the corporate-owned media either doesn’t care to show us or actively tries to block our view of.

Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, was escorted out of the Los Angeles office of shoemaker Skechers
, the company said Wednesday afternoon, as the fallen rapper and fashion mogul continues to face fallout from his recent antisemitic remarks.

Ye showed up unannounced and was escorted out of the building by two executives, the company said. Ye has officially changed his name from Kanye West.

“Skechers is not considering and has no intention of working with West. We condemn his recent divisive remarks and do not tolerate antisemitism or any other form of hate speech,” the company said in a statement. “The Company would like to again stress that West showed up unannounced and uninvited to Skechers corporate offices.”

Yep - it’s only a matter of time until this recent manic phase comes to an end and the depressive phase begins. He’s desperately seeking attention, seeking validation, and the wingnuts are giving it to him in spades. He wants to be accepted and they’re happy to have a prominent black man serving up all the racist and bigoted shit they’re too afraid to say in public. But we all know that the Wingnut Welfare Train doesn’t ride those tracks forever, it eventually reaches its destination or it derails. And when you’re a minority whose worth to the far-right is measured by your usefulness, the latter is often the case more frequently than the former.

I’m sure they can find a Senate seat for him to run for by 2024.
/sorta (given they already tried to leverage him as a Presidential candidate to see if he would siphon votes away from Biden.)

I’m off to bed.

It turns out it costs a lot of money to run this rental mini-SUV we have. A round trip to Cheyenne and back used more gasoline than our Smart holds.

I can see why people around here are more concerned with gas prices than they are things like abortion rights (most people here are opposed anyway and there’s no clinic within two hundred miles), loss of rights (they don’t think it will happen to them), &c.

When inflated gas prices cost you a bunch of money to drive fifty miles to work, or twenty miles to the grocery store to buy inflated groceries, those concerns seem more immediate.

My wife and I went to the butcher shop in the county seat right after we got back from Canada. Restocking our freezer with our usual stuff like steaks or sausages was a lot more expensive than the last time we went in June.

A Chinese military contractor created a video showing off its terrifying new military technology, revealing a robot attack dog that can be dropped off by a drone.

The video that was initially released on the verified Weibo account of “Kestrel Defense Blood-Wing,” a page affiliated with a Chinese defense contractor, shows a drone hovering over a building and then dropping off a robot on the roof. After the drone flies away, the robot gets up on four legs and then begins to scan for targets around the building with what appears to be some sort of automatic weapons attached to its back.

According to a report from WarZone, the weapon mounted on the robot dog is possibly a Chinese QBB-97 light machine gun, which is capable of firing 650 rounds per minute at an effective range of 400 meters.

Our future under a GOP Congress and Presidency:

Russia to ban sharing LGBT ‘propaganda’ with adults as well as children

The controversial Russian ban against promoting so-called “gay propaganda” looks set to be extended to all adults.

The move represents a toughening of an existing 2013 law, which makes providing information about being LGBT to children a criminal offence.

Those convicted face large fines for promoting what Russia calls “non-traditional sexual relations”.

I have questions.

A South Carolina mom who lost both of her arms after she was mauled by a pack of pit bulls in March was arrested Tuesday for allegedly trafficking meth, a report said.

Kyleen Waltman, 39, was busted during a traffic stop in Abbeville County, where police say they found 8.3 grams of methamphetamine in her purse, authorities told The State.

After Waltman was told she was under arrest, she allegedly fessed up to having an additional 7.2 grams of drugs in bags in her pockets, the report said.
Jeffrey Wayne Bond, a passenger in the vehicle, was also arrested after allegedly admitting to having meth in his pocket, cops said. The two were booked into the Abbeville County Detention Center.

Waltman had both of her arms amputated to the shoulder and lost her vocal chords after the three dogs viciously attacked her on a sidewalk in the city of Columbia.

She was set up!

Tesla under US criminal investigation over self-driving claims, sources say
Reuters learns US DoJ launched investigation last year after more than a dozen crashes, some fatal, involving Autopilot system

theguardian.com

Tesla is under criminal investigation in the United States over claims that the company’s electric vehicles can drive themselves, three people familiar with the matter said.

The US Department of Justice (DoJ) launched the previously undisclosed investigation last year following more than a dozen crashes, some of them fatal, involving Tesla’s driver assistance system known as Autopilot, which was activated during the accidents, the people said.

As early as 2016, Tesla’s marketing materials have touted Autopilot’s capabilities. On a conference call that year, Elon Musk, the Tesla chief executive, described it as “probably better” than a human driver.

well, now we know why Elon wants so badly for Republicans to win.

A great article:

… Biden has never been at his best in big speeches, where his delivery can be stilted, his stories sometimes meandering. It’s the end of his speech that often marks the beginning of Biden’s favorite part of an event — the rope line, in the parlance of political operatives. He whirls around, scans the crowd and zeroes in on his first target for a one-on-one connection.

It might be with someone like Tim Eichinger, a Milwaukee brewery owner who asked Biden a question during a TV town hall 20 months ago, and has since had a one-on-one videoconference with the president and seen Biden send a couple of letters to his grandson.

It might be a small child — Biden likes to carry some cash so he can discretely slip kids a few dollars and encourage them to buy ice cream. It might be someone who stutters — they come in for special attention from the president.

Yay! Maybe we can get rid of those “early cancellation” fees from cell phone companies.

They are technically already gone for the most part.

These days, most people (aside from those who use prepaid service) finance their phones on monthly payments. If you bail on your carrier before the phone is paid off, you immediately owe the remaining balance on the device (i.e. you can’t cancel your service AND still keep making monthly payments on the phone).

re: #148 SerialUpDinger

Seconded

This also affects runners, especially in the dark hours of the early morning.
It’s what degrees? Nah, i’ll just pull the covers over my head and…

Because we want to run (so we fool ourselves to believe), eventually we learn about the proper gear, layers, materials etc.

First, I check the accuweather Realfeel to determine ‘temperature’.

So I don’t have to guess, remember, or reinvent the wheel every season, I wrote out a table of what to wear for every 10 degree zone from 80 down to 15. (15 says what’s the matter with you, stay inside.) I’ve accounted for wind, falling rain, wet roads, snow falling and piled, etc.

I adjusted the table to dress for about 20 degrees (F) warmer than the Realfeel. I’m ready to be uncomfortably cold for the first 10 minutes because runners produce a lot of heat. Down to 45 or so no wind, I’m only wearing shorts and a long sleeve tec shirt

Outside time matters. A 60 minute or less run, I can tolerate a lot. Longer outings have to be more comfortable or what’s the point of being out there? Plus we’re dealing with more sweat, possible chilling and other logistics, etc.

If you start your excursion into the cold already comfortable, you’ll likely be too hot once you begin producing biker’s heat. Of course you can peel off layers..

Take the time, figure it out and you won’t find excuses to stay in.
You’ll look forward to doing it right and being out there when others are pulling up their covers.

AMSTERDAM, Oct 27 (Reuters) - A climate activist glued his head to glass covering the world-famous “Girl with a Pearl Earring” painting at a museum in The Hague on Thursday, though the artwork was not damaged, staff there said.

If this continues, I hope for some draconian measures against these creatures.

Not known if this is the student that possibly had the weapon, but had several students in my class that did the, “…oh yeah, I think I heard about that” in relation to the act.

Explains much.

Trump and West share their adoration for mass murdering anti Semite who plunged world into conflict that killed 30 million people.

West seems to ignore or not care that Hitler and Nazis considered blacks to be subhumans who should be sterilized in Germany and who were polluting Aryan bloodlines.

But goddamned Nazis and Nazi lovers are coming out of the woodwork since Trump made it fashionable. They’re no longer hiding in the shadows. Trump normalized hate, and the media was complicit.

TMZ had a huge story on their hands, and they buried it (same way National Enquirer bought and killed stories that were unfavorable to… Trump and others). I want to know why they didn’t note West’s bigoted and anti-Semitic comments at that time.

On September 13, 2021, Fox Corporation acquired TMZ from WarnerMedia for $50 million.”

*edit: Nevermind. West’s interview was in 2018. 3 years before Fox acquired it.

I was dragged into a conversation with a black man yesterday who seemed normal up until he started in with the black Jew mythology and how Kanye was being persecuted for being right. There was no escape so I started asking some questions to try to get to the bottom of this.

The arguments are incoherent and each individual’s delusion may be personal, but my understanding (if you can call it that) is that there is a sect of black men who believe, for whatever reason, that they are genetically Hebrew and Israelites, and the true Jews by blood. They believe that these specific African-Americans (unclear if this includes all black people or just a subset) are descended from the tribes of Israel, and that this then makes them distinct from people who are Jews by religion. It’s those religious, fake Jews who are the globalist elites who need to be purged, and since those are fake or otherwise unworthyJews and the black men are the real Jews, that means they cannot be antisemitic.

It makes no sense to me and if anyone has further insights please speak up. Or don’t, it might be better not to know.

Of course, there are many blacks who are legitimate Jews from ancient times: Those from Ethiopia are believed to be descendants of King Solomon. And there are others of more modern ancestry — such as Michelle Obama’s cousin Rabbi Capers Funnye and the late actor Yaphet Kotto.

Ethiopian Jews are a real thing. Sudanese Jews are a real thing. Their history goes back thousands of years, and they’re every bit as “really really” genetically Jewish as any Ashkenazi, Sephardic or Mizrahi Jew.

But the people who call themselves “Black Israelites” have made up their whole origin story, and fairly recently at that.

Here’s a Jewish Ethiopian immigrant who became Miss Israel 2013.
