It’s just a matter of time before the GQPers start labeling this assclown a “librul”:

lawhawk  Nov 23, 2022 • 10:35:29am

First the GOP packed the courts with their right wing extremists.
Then they came for overturning Roe.
They then went after gun rights and making it even easier to get guns and harder for states to regulate.

SCOTUS overturned 100+ year old NY gun regulation. This was the state’s latest effort to try and implement gun safety rules in the state.

NY has a per capita gun death rate that is a fraction of what you see in FL or TX or WY.

Gun death rates are highest in lax gun law states, and making it easier to get guns is a motivating factor for the GOP and right wing extremists. They don’t care how many die or how many mass shootings there are.

They care only that gun sales increase, and peddle fear that only GOPers care about gun owners and that more guns will somehow make you safer when every study shows the opposite.

GOP are a death cult in every sense of the term.

I find it a major pain to use. I tolerate it for online gaming with some friends, but it has no other value for me. No worse than Telegram or Mastodon but no better either for me.

The only social media other than trolling fascists on Twitter is Instagram to follow the celebs I like, and I keep a Facebook account only to use messenger since it’s convenient for my GF.

Well that was quick!

Georgia high court allows Saturday voting for Senate runoff

Georgia counties will be allowed to hold early voting this Saturday in the U.S. Senate runoff election between Democratic incumbent Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker, under a Wednesday ruling from the state Supreme Court.

The court issued a unanimous, one-sentence ruling declining to review or stay a ruling by the state’s intermediate appellate court. Republicans had objected to the Saturday voting.

Well, Fox was having convulsions over Biden holding Christmas tree reception ceremony on same day as the turkey pardon. They’ve got to have their war on Christmas nonsense, and this was the declared angle, although even Fox had to admit that Biden was doing what Trump did just two years ago - holding both on the same day.

Oh, and Fox held its Christmas tree lighting ceremony in NYC yesterday too - before the Thanksgiving Day parade balloons were put aloft.

Talk about jumping the gun.

Fox has to always up the outrage to 11ty, and it’s gotten to the point where they just come across as clowns and need to be laughed at as same and called fucking fascists for trying to silence those critical of their propaganda efforts.

Fox is always caterwauling over the fact that Biden family is going to Cape Cod for the week, ignoring that Trump spent 10x as much as Biden has on trips - and Trump trips were all to help prop up his golf businesses, whereas Biden isn’t seeing a dime from going home to his personal residence, going to his family’s longstanding church, or visiting other locations. He’s not self-dealing as Trump did for everything, but Fox wont care or compare the two.

This is not to say there aren’t sincere Christians but the Evangelical/Repug cargo cult is not them. Real persecution is a significant test. Many Christians have endured it over the centuries, and passed.
If you went Nero on this mob, though, and started burning them to light your garden, people like Ellis would instantly recant and fall over each other volunteering to help gather firewood.

I’d propose door #3, which is that these people don’t have any consistent beliefs but are entirely invested in the ones they hold momentarily. They’re not building edifices within themselves, they’re consuming packaged goods as suits their appetite.

Most people do this to some degree—turn up and down the volume of their beliefs dependent on context and circumstance, choose how strident they will be—but it really stands out when you encounter someone who’s only real commitment is to enjoying power. You can watch everything they say they believe in bend to become the same thing: a justification of what they’re already doing.

The ugly statement above needs to be true because it is pleasurable, and transcendental confirmation that the dead should not be mourned, but also that the writer is one of the saved. At some other time the same person will show grace because the bad thing that happened wasn’t pleasurable, and nuance is in the moment comforting.

The problem with this assessment is that “Christianity” isn’t really a solid construct with agreed-upon borders. It’s spent it’s entire existence trying and failing to define those borders, and even the temporary successes have been the product of coercion not consensus.

Part of this is just the problem of texts: if you have a lot of words they can be parsed, emphasis given to different parts, creating endless interpretations. But if a text is sacred then the entire interpretation process is fraught with implications that grant and strip power. Every single religion has this same problem: there is a gap between the textual basis of the faith and the way the words are received, and anyone can act as the mediator, the translator, of meaning. You don’t have to lie to be a translator and get what you want, you just have to be technically correct.

Inventing new features of the faith that are convenient as you try and sell your brand and set it as the status quo is the norm. If we just constrain ourselves to Christianity…there are a lot of self-serving lies throughout the history of the religion. Most of the early martyricons are fiction; the donation of Constantine is a forgery; the formal attribution of the Crucifixion to the Jews is a choice of emphasis that was convenient for a now-Christian Rome that wanted to perpetuate it’s Roman-ness.

Evangelicals are just the end point of a mix of highly-selective reading and following through on existing self-serving lies consistent with what has come before. They’re not the first Christians to declare themselves victims as they brutalize the world—that would be the missionaries that brought soldiers and guns with them—nor the first Christians to suggest that material accumulation is spiritual merit—that was invented to justify feudal kingship and the very material-incentivized relationship between monarchs and bishops. The sentiment above is just a slight twist on Aquinas, by way of “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.”

If you went Nero on this mob, though, and started burning them to light your garden, people like Ellis would instantly recant and fall over each other volunteering to help gather firewood.

But that train has already set sail: hegemonic Christianity has been built to gather firewood for Nero since Constantine. Protestantism didn’t vote against pyres, just who would be put on them. Christianity has always used the state as a tool for the violent implementation of the faith on others—that’s what divine kingship was; that what nationalist churches spreading into colonized lands were; that why so much of American ambitions are framed in terms of God-and-nation as one, be that Indian removal or anti-communism.

The transaction “I have suffered, now I am permitted to fucking rule you” is not new, its literally how the religion stretched the world. Radical American fundamentalism is just naked in how it talks about how the violence of the United States is Christian violence: they don’t need to be takfiris because the US Armed Forces is doing the killing for them. They’re doing terrorism to patch the places the state doesn’t do terror for them. Evangelicals are not an exception, they’re a naked expression of the gruesome realities of wielding a solitary God as a force of power and license.

When he refers to broken laws, is he referring to US law or breaking the law in the user’s nation of residence? Because there’s a LOT of things that are legal to say in the United States that are patently illegal in many parts of the world (example - espousing pro-Nazi propaganda in much of Europe will get you arrested and fast).

Sorry if this sounds vehement, but…disavowal doesn’t work and it’s corrosive to the self because it’s a kind of rhetorical defensive clutch.

I used to do this in discussions post-9/11, but at some point it became clear that it wasn’t an effective rhetoric and it meant having to backpeddle and justify in a way that just more work for me and more interpretative gaps into which both fundamentalists and bigots could claim a superior reading, find an exception or an interpretation.

Empty people can always parse a text finer than someone with actual convictions; they are better at the game of exclusion and you end up hurting yourself by trying to play their rigged game.

Cheney spokesman Jeremy Adler issued a blistering statement Wednesday to The Washington Post in response to the criticisms.

“Donald Trump is the first president in American history to attempt to overturn an election and prevent the peaceful transfer of power, Adler said. “So, damn right Liz is ‘prioritizing’ understanding what he did and how he did it and ensuring it never happens again.

Adler added, “Some staff have submitted subpar material for the report that reflects long-held liberal biases about federal law enforcement, Republicans, and sociological issues outside the scope of the Select Committee’s work. She won’t sign onto any ‘narrative’ that suggests Republicans are inherently racist or smears men and women in law enforcement, or suggests every American who believes God has blessed America is a white supremacist.”

WaPo story this morning:

Covid is no longer a pandemic of the unvaccinated. Here’s why.

It starts off with a scary lead:

For the first time, a majority of Americans dying from the coronavirus received at least the primary series of the vaccine.

Fifty-eight percent of coronavirus deaths in August were people who were vaccinated or boosted, according to an analysis conducted for The Health 202 by Cynthia Cox, vice president at the Kaiser Family Foundation.

It’s a continuation of a troubling trend that has emerged over the past year. As vaccination rates have increased and new variants appeared, the share of deaths of people who were vaccinated has been steadily rising. In September 2021, vaccinated people made up just 23 percent of coronavirus fatalities. In January and February this year, it was up to 42 percent, per our colleagues Fenit Nirappil and Dan Keating.

“We can no longer say this is a pandemic of the unvaccinated,” Cox told The Health 202.

But that’s not the whole truth:

Being unvaccinated is still a major risk factor for dying from covid-19. But efficacy wanes over time, and an analysis out last week from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlights the need to get regular booster shots to keep one’s risk of death from the coronavirus low, especially for the elderly.

How many never read past the “you’re gonna die anyway even if you’re vaxxed”?

As vaccination rates have increased and new variants appeared, the share of deaths of people who were vaccinated has been steadily rising.

And if 100% of the population were vaccinated, then 100% of the COVID deaths would occur to vaccinated people.

The bottom line is that coronavirus is endemic and the best way to keep it from being more damaging is by vaccinating people.

Gives Walker too much credit. He’s nowhere near as clever as Eddie Murphy was in that movie.

Eddie Murphy was the smartest person in the car. Walker understands little of what’s going on around him. In both cases, though, white men offered black men what appeared to be power and wealth and were certain they could control them. Doubt there will be any problem controlling Walker, at least in terms of getting his vote on any issue.

And I asked them 2 questions

First if the privatized system was so good why did Pinochet stick with the old system

and

Second if the privatized system was so good why did Chile wind up paying additional benefits to the victims of the systems because they couldn’t make ends meet with the meager amount in their accounts when it came time to retire.

And when I posed those questions—the usual BS that Conservatism can’t fail because it’s never been truly enacted…

Brass monkey cold. Ever encounter a brass monkey in Scotland? See.
It is not mid-continent ass-bite cold though. The ocean, especially the relative proximity of the Gulf Stream, moderates it somewhat.
Americans often don’t realize just how far north the British Isles really are. London is the same latitude as Calgary for example. The north of Scotland is just a tiny bit farther south than Anchorage.

We discussed recently here (a couple weeks ago?). Social Security is easy to repair — just raise the wage base (maybe combined with a factor less than 15% on this increase). It’s Medicare that’s the real problem.

re: #217 Belafon

A long thread, but I think this is a very good point:

Well…yes but also no?

Social conservatism both facilitates and throws a blanket over all kinds of sexual predation because it’s core belief is that there are authority figures that can control the bodies of others. All forms of abuse radiate from this premise: your body is not your own.

But an entirety good faith social conservative doing purity culture to kids is still doing something that causes harm independent of CSA: it’s fucking monstrous, it makes the children subject to it alienated from their own bodies and desires.

What really bugs me is this:

What I am saying is that purity culture wires the brain of men to desire child likeness, which encourages pedophilia. After all desire and objectification happen in our brain.

because the end point of purity culture is subservience, not childhood: you are not your own, ever. Women are subservient to men, but specifically to men with authority, and men with authority are entitled to whatever they do to men and women: that is social conditioning, but it’s letting it off too easily to say that this is some kind of programmed brain response.

No, this is an active process that requires participation on the part of all the perps. Men must buy into the premise not just of purity, but they are owners and controllers of bodies such that purity can be weaponized. With thousands of cases on hand, it very easy to demonstrate that their abuses of power extend in whichever direction, to whatever targets, they please. This is voluntary, a tool, a thing they can point at a target.

This also diverts attention from what CSA is: an abuse of power. It’s not wiring or any other inherent quality, it’s power and the permission that power grants. Men who weren’t raised with purity culture still use purity culture as the basis for their predation because it’s an effective tactic: a lot of the famous church nonces invented their own gender-relations standards that gave them access to young women as needed, including pro-sex messaging that just happened to incorporate the idea that the authority figure was…safe…to explore these things with. Men and women from within purity culture also use that premise of subservience as the basis for other kinds of abuse—such as just beating and torturing kids—because, again, it’s not wiring, it’s system that grants permission to the powerful to do as they please with the bodies of the subservient.

This also doesn’t work because social conservative abuse systems use the same mix of shame and social exclusion threat on boys and men who are not subject to the same aestheticized vision of correct behavior, but instead are punished with a separate variety of shame and social exclusion. It also doesn’t explain the proliferation of sexual assault of adults perpetrated by and concealed within social conservative systems that also use shame and social exclusion.

The coldest weather I have ever personally experienced was in the aptly named Cold Lake Alberta. At one point I was outdoors (briefly!) when it was -40 (same on both scales). All time low there was -48.3 C (-54.9F). Once it’s down to zero or so, though, lower temps don’t make a lot of difference. You’re either properly dressed, or you get indoors promptly, or you die.

It was always interesting to watch the poor sergeant tasked with calling role at 0500hr. After some stuttering and failure to properly [pronounce the name, almost every sergeant settled on Lt Alphabet. The Lt faced it all with a general sense of amusement.

re: #3 lawhawk

The GOP is a homicide cult, not a death cult. They want you to die, not themselves.
