I had no idea that I could charter a bus to drop a bunch of people in the middle of nowhere.
I guess I could charter a trip to drop 50-60 women and children off in the middle of Death Valley with no return plans, or coordination of life-sustaining services, and the bus company would just take my check and wish me luck.
The Charter Companies that are providing these services to Abbot and Desantis know exactly what they are participating in.
I wonder how many professional sports teams and universities use these charter companies. I wonder why they would continue to contract with them?Look, it’s pretty simple.
Nothing will change. The racism, fascism, misogyny, hatred and white supremacy…NONE OF IT…will change, unless and until we make racism, fascism, misogyny, hatred and white supremacy unprofitable to the corporations, businesses and individuals that fund and enable it.
These Charter Companies shouldn’t get a moments peace.Their call centers, mailboxes and email accounts should be so flooded with irate Americans disgusted with this evil that they have to shut them down.
They shouldn’t even be able to drive the church choir around the fucking block.

As is perfectly well and understandable.
Saw a bunch of posts today basically asking “Dear Jewish people/fellow Jewish people, do you really eat Chinese on Xmas?” From coast to coast - and half a world away, in my case (because if you think I can resist when nearly every other social media post I see is about yummy food, you’re sorely mistaken) - the answer appears a rather emphatic yes.
I think this “tradition” started as a joke:
Why are Chinese restaurants open on Christmas?
Because Jewish people need a place to eat!
It became an actual “tradition” when kosher Asian cuisine became popular. We have been enjoying this new custom for about 10 years. I used to make my own “Asian-style” food but now there is a kosher takeout. No delivery here, we have to go to New York or Florida if we want that.

From downstairs regarding the Southwest Airlines clusterfuck. Apparently Phoenix is the worst hit, but their entire system has been shit for days. I have been trying to get to Denver since the 22nd, and Southwest canceled on me for the third time earlier today.
At least this time, I found out before I was at the airport (although $50 flushed down he toilet because ground transportation was already en route).
But, Southwest will never disappoint me again. My airline selection rule is extremely simple. The airline that most recently royally pissed me off is not an option. Southwest will not be an option for me for a very, very long time.
What Southwest should have done, obviously, is shut down for a week and then build margin into their system so that that a 2-3 day weather event doesn’t fuck them up for a week.

you’re talking about the cheap seats, as well. premium seats for the big name acts are easily passing 5 grand. Obviously, if you have the dough, 5 large is tip money at the high end strip club after the show but having tickets priced at that level simply opens the headroom for more modestly price tickets that regular people would normally buy but are now being priced out of those seats.

What’s kind of amazing is that the weather here in Phoenix has been completely gorgeous for the last few days. Mid 70s, clear blue skies (well, if you count out that pesky pollution), etc. It’s definitely not the weather here. The issue is completely with Southwest. For whatever reason(s), Southwest customers are trapped here. It’s my understanding there may be multiple causes to Southwest’s woes, and some of them are self-inflicted. That said, our weather is going to return to a more normal (for this time of year) temperature (50s/60s) with some rain in the forecast from Wednesday onward.

It will be interesting to see what the after-disaster reporting looks like for this mess. As you say, it is clearly a SWA issue instead of just a weather issue, and IMO heads should roll (but won’t) in the SWA C-suite for this.

I suspect the root cause of the SWA disaster is no margin in the system (because that would be a cost), so if the shit hits the fan in enough cities simultaneously (as it did with the storm) the system breaks in a way the airline can’t just “work through”.

China to export pandemic.
China ends Covid quarantine for travellers in January (BBC, one hour ago)
China will scrap quarantine for travellers from 8 January, officials said, marking the last major shift from the country’s zero-Covid policy.
After three years of closed borders, this will effectively reopen the country to those with work and study visas, or seeking to visit family.
But it comes as China struggles with the virus’ ferocious spread in the wake of restrictions being lifted.
Reports says hospitals are overwhelmed and elderly people are dying.
The true toll - daily case counts and deaths - is currently unknown because officials have stopped releasing Covid data.
Beijing had reported about 4,000 new Covid infections each day last week and few deaths.
On Sunday it said it would stop publishing case numbers altogether. But British health data firm Airfinity estimated China was experiencing more than a million infections and 5,000 deaths a day, according to Reuters.

Santa Putin Kidnaps Child’s Father In Bizarre Russian Anti-LGBTQ Propaganda Video (Wonkette, December 26. 2022)
Seriously what the hell even is this?
Here is a lovely Boxing Day present from us to you — a very normal video that circulated around Russia ahead of the holiday season depicting Vladmir Putin dressed as Santa, breaking into a child’s home and de-gaying it for Christmas.
Let us set the scene: A camera zooms in on a pair of girl’s shoes and a dress, a teddy bear and a ball with stars on it. It then pans to a bookshelf featuring five books, entitled Render Me, Gender Me;LGBT+ Modern Studies;Straight Into Gay; Homosexuality. Transitioning. Family.; and Growing Up Gay. Just the kind of non-existent books that parents who wish to force their straight child to be gay or their cis child to be trans might read, were that to be a thing for anyone, which it is not.
(more, the books depicted have English titles)

Forced participation in religious activities to be classified as child abuse (Japan News, December 27, 2022)
New health ministry guidelines will classify as abuse any acts by members of religious groups that threaten or force their children to participate in religious activities, or that hinder a child’s career path based on religious doctrine.
According to sources, the Health, Labor, and Welfare Ministry is preparing its first draft of guidelines to help local governments deal with issues of child abuse that have emerged in connection with religious groups such as the Unification Church, officially known as the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification.
Children of religious groups’ followers have criticized authorities’ handling of this issue in the past. They have said child consultation centers and the police did not respond to their complaints of abuse, telling the children there was nothing they could do because freedom of religion is protected under the Constitution.
In October, the ministry notified local governments not to make perfunctory responses simply because a problem is religious in nature. It is also working to outline specific points in the guidelines that authorities should be aware of when dealing with such cases.
According to the sources, the envisaged guidelines will be in a question-and-answer format and will specify what faith-based acts against children fall under the categories of abuse as stipulated in the Child Abuse Prevention Law.
The law stipulates four types of abuse: physical, sexual, neglect and psychological.
Inciting fear by telling children they will go to hell if they don’t participate in religious activities, or preventing them from making decisions about their career path, is regarded as psychological abuse and neglect in the guidelines.
Other acts that will constitute neglect include not having the financial resources to provide adequate food or housing for children as a result of making large donations, or blocking their interaction with friends due to a difference in religious beliefs and thereby undermining their social skills.
When taking action, the guidelines will urge child consultation centers and local governments to pay particular attention to the possibility that children may be unable to recognize the damage caused by abuse after being influenced by doctrine-based thinking and values.

Probably the best we could hope for is one of them to shiv their way to the top of the government.
The only way to get rid of them is to overthrow the government, because they aren’t going to have a sudden enlightenment.
On that Dennis Prager rant a couple days ago about liberal children denying their conservative parents access to their grandchildren, and the parents calling into his show whinging about it, there is a reason for the whinging.
The Missing Missing Reasons (Isendai)
The world of estranged parents’ forums
Members of estranged parents’ forums often say their children never gave them any reason for the estrangement, then turn around and reveal that their children did tell them why. But the reasons their children give—the infamous missing reasons—are missing.
My sons consistently refuse to reply to my emails and let my calls go to voicemail, or barely speak if they do answer. They accuse me of being a terrible person, but won’t elaborate about exactly what I’ve done. Well, sometimes they do, but it doesn’t make sense, at least to me. For example, it’s hard to be part of the birth of my grandchild if I didn’t know that I was going to have one!
All this started because of a personal email they felt entitled to read on my computer.
— Elizabeth Vagnioni, “Why Some Grown Kids Cut Off Their Parents”
What were the other reasons her sons give? Not knowing about the birth of her grandchild can’t be the only one.[1] What was in the email that caused both her sons to cut her off? We’re supposed to be distracted by the hinkiness of the sons reading the email, and never notice that Vagnioni just told us that she knows exactly why her sons cut her off. Pay no attention to the missing explanation behind the curtain.
I was abandoned by my daughter 6 years ago this June. I received a text message that said, “The keys are under the mat I have moved out, don’t coming looking for me I never want to see you again you have ruined my life”. I… got home and found my husband standing in her empty room. [….] She had a prepared speech that she emailed to me - she did [not] even say Mom or Dad anywhere in it - it was **** or my husband’s first name. She stopped communicating with me about 1 year after - but each time I asked why I got the prepared speech or some slung together four letter words that I didn’t appreciate. [….] [All my husband] said was “She 18, I was expecting this.” I wasn’t.
— A mother’s account from Abandoned Parents: The Devil’s Dilemma
What was in the “prepared speech”? Why did her father expect her to move out at 18? The mother has two different sources of explanations at her fingertips, and she turns to neither. Nor does she repeat so much as a scrap of her daughter’s allegations.

Continuing my ranting about housing and flippers…
I’ve noticed that on recent seasons of HGTV’s various shows that they are really pushing vinyl flooring. Even for projects that are upper end (for HGTV.)
I can only presume that HGTV has a vinyl flooring sponsor that wants them to push vinyl.
It wasn’t that long ago, only a couple of years, when these shows were pushing the “engineered” wood flooring. That product is usually some sort of high-density fiber plank with a thin veneer of real wood on top. It can’t be refinished but it does for sure look like real wood (because the veneer is real wood.)
Anyway, sure, vinyl is easy to clean and I can see young families with two kids and dogs and cats preferring that. We had linoleum when I was growing up, which is what was used before vinyl flooring was brought about.
Vinyl has several problems, though. Even though the HGTV talking heads keep saying “luxury vinyl” it really is still just vinyl.
1) It outgasses. Even the expensive stuff.
2) It can’t really be refinished. You just have to tear it up or put a new layer on top of it.
Now here’s what is driving all of this: the idea that one has to continually remodel. It’s the flipper-dream: spend a few weeks on a house to put on some lipstick then sell it to some desperate first time house buyer for a big mark-up.
Everytime I see one of these shows demolish what are perfectly good fixtures I wince. The Property Brothers decided to use the word “recycle” when they come across cabinets in good condition - and maybe they really do that. But too often with these shows the demolition crew just destroys things that can still have use.
Now I realize that the audience for these shows are people who are the target customers of a few big-box home decor corporations.
The shows are not really about housing at all - they are about aspiration, increasing desire for new things so people will go out and go into debt because they think they need new things.
And that is the bottom line on why so many people can not afford to buy a residence anymore.
We have a growing housing problem in this country. Construction of rentable units in cities is not keeping up with the aging out of old buildings. Single family dwellings are not affordable for most young couples anymore, if they live in a city.
And the shallow and greedy proposition that flippers embrace cannot do anything but make that worse.
Fundamental reform is needed in finance and land ownership.

The US has one of the fastest growing populations in the world, doubling in just sixty years and as Samuel Clemens supposedly once said when asked about investments, “Buy land son, they’re not making it any more.” The cost of matchwood and spackle is peanuts compared to the price of a half-acre of well-situated land near to utilities, stores, schools etc. that is zoned for residential and there are a lot of people wanting just that.
Most folks, as soon as they buy a home or a property spend time, money and effort ripping out what they find and replacing it to their own taste anyway. Here in Britain there’s a decor that’s called “builder’s beige” that experienced home sellers aim for, a clean neutral paint job and minimal flooring and accents that the would-be buyers can project their own desires and aspirations onto.

Suspect in failed Brazil bomb attack: I wanted to halt Lula’s inauguration
Rio de Janeiro, Dec 25 (EFE).- The supporter of Brazilian ultrarightist President Jair Bolsonaro who was arrested on the weekend after trying to detonate a bomb in Brasilia and from whom authorities seized an arsenal of weaponry admitted that his aim was to cause chaos to prevent the inauguration of President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
According to excerpts from his questioning released Sunday by the Federal District Civil Police, the accused admitted that he had planned to detonate the bomb with other Bolsonaro supporters who are camped out in front of the Brazilian army’s general headquarters to call upon the soldiers to stage a coup d’etat to prevent the leftist Lula’s investiture on Jan. 1.
He added that the aim of the two attacks that the group had planned was to “start chaos” that would force the authorities to declare a “state of siege” and enable the army to launch the coup.
“I decided to work out a plan with the demonstrators at the Army General Headquarters to provoke an intervention by the armed forces and the declaration of a state of siege to prevent the inauguration of communism in Brazil,” the suspect said.
The suspect was charged with terrorism after admitting that he built the bomb.
Businessman George Washington de Oliveira Sousa, 54, was formally charged with terrorism after admitting that he built the bomb that was placed inside a fuel tanker truck but deactivated on Saturday by police before the vehicle could be driven to Brasilia’s international airport.
Sousa said that he lives in the Amazon state of Para and that he has been in Brasilia since Nov. 12 as part of the groups of Bolsonaro followers camped out in front of the barracks, adding that they do not recognize Lula’s election victory in last October’s presidential election.
“What motivated me to acquire the weapons (seized at his home) were the words of President Bolsonaro, who always emphasizes the importance of civilian armament,” he added.
Lula’s future attorney general, Flavio Dino, said that the camps set up by the Bolsonaro supporters in front of the military barracks where they have been calling for a coup have been transformed into terrorist “incubators” and he called on the authorities to break them up.
“The serious events of Saturday in Brasilia prove that such ‘patriotic’ camps have become incubators for terrorists,” he said.
“No political deal is possible (with such people) and there will be no amnesty for terrorists, their supporters and financiers,” he warned.

Of all the messed up things the anti-vaxxers, COVID conspiracists and QAnon people have done, one of the cruelest has been their obsession the past few years with finding obituaries of people who died from heart issues, or whose obituaries say they “died suddenly,” and harassing their loved ones by baselessly claiming those people died from complications of the COVID vaccine, often accusing them of covering it up. It’s absolutely evil.
Now that Elon Musk has taken over Twitter, it appears to have gotten a lot worse. The night before Christmas, a user calling herself “My Hero Q” posted a video of CNA reporter Julie Yoo collapsing on air, along with the caption “How many on air vax deaths before people who are vaxxed realize their situation? When they cut back to the news reporter the look on her face says she was just told to not say a word…”
The answer to that question is “zero.” Julie Yoo is very much alive and fainted on air back in November due to low blood sugar and dehydration.
This woman didn’t know anything about Julie Yoo’s collapse, she didn’t know if Yoo had been vaccinated or not, and she definitely did not know what the other anchor was “told” to do in response to an obviously awkward situation. She literally just made up an entire storyline that fit her agenda.

“I’m really sort of torn,” Zeidman said, “because you don’t want to give up a Republican seat in Congress, and I’m not sure we could ever win it back again. But I certainly think that the leadership of the Republican Party has an obligation not to seat someone that is obviously totally phony.”

Hate in the children’s hearts? I’m not sure I understand, since it’s the parents driving away their children.
A few hours ago that article led me down a rabbit hole of a whole bunch of these fora where the children are demonised by their parents because the children cut them off for toxicity (antivaxxer stances, trying to drive wedges in marital relationships, trying to control adult children as though they were minors, &c).
Like the article says, the parents have the reason the child cut them out (letters, E-mails, texts, &c) but somehow they never post excerpts of those conversations; if those letters &c actually supported the parents’ position, they would offer them as proof.

I had to cut my sister out of my life for a lifetime of abuse.
It’s said centrism always aids the oppressor, and in the case of parents who say “they can’t choose between their children,” that means they choose to support the abusing child.
Since my mother is a clinical psychologist, she understands the dynamic of abusive siblings and enabling parents, and why cutting toxic family members out of your life sometimes is the only solution. She too isn’t going to cut out my sister from her life, but she never mentions her to me because she knows there isn’t going to be any reconciliation.

Actually, I do understand and you don’t get it. There are a LOT of parents out there who expect their adult children to be exactly as they (the parents) want. We have parents out there who deliberately withheld their adult children’s birth certificates (if they even HAD them, because their parents were so whack they never documented their child’s birth) to keep them within the family orbit. Other children get shitty homeschool educations, and they basically have nowhere to go until it just becomes too much and they leave for their own safety and sanity.
I thought that growing up in a household with a certified paranoid schizophrenic mom was bad, but my parents didn’t stop me from doing what I wanted, and the one time my father tried to order me home (I was 22), I told him no. You obviously don’t know how much energy it can take to stay with some parents, and how caustic that can be. My mom had an anger problem growing up, which she learned from her dad. We all, including my dad, had to learn how to carefully live around her, how to say things in a way that wouldn’t get her angry. It contributed a lot to why I could be way too manipulative when I was younger (my brother still hasn’t quite broken out of it).
She’s a lot better now. She doesn’t have kids around her every day, her grandchildren have challenged her assumptions - two of my sons are gay, three of her step-grandchildren are half Latino - and heart bypass surgery tends to slow you down, but I still have a tendency of not hearing what she says the first time because it was a survival mechanism.
And the only reasons I can truly tolerate her now are 1) Dad, and 2) I had a stronger will than her ultimately, but I can tell you that there are choices I have made since I was an adult that are clearly marked by trying to revolt against her emotional abuse.
So, in some cases, leaving is the less worst outcome.

re: #175 darthstar
Based on today’s TSLA stock price, Elon is now coming under tremendous pressure now that his stake in the company is now worth a maximum of approx. $49 Billion.
We all know he foolishly spent $44 Billion on a money-losing company but also took out loans with tremendously bad interest rates as well. He also got fellow traveler billionaire dipshits to invest with him who are now also feeling the pinch and probably letting Elon know about :when am I getting my money back?” questions on a daily basis.
The weekly and monthly money-losing drain will really start being felt into next year. While Elon doesn’t have to report quarterly numbers anymore for Twitter, he cannot escape the ugly reality of becoming a net debtor and will likely sell off the company for Pennie’s or just simply shut it down and sell everything down to the last stapler within the first half of 2023. Either that, or he will be forced to unload many more shares of Tesla and likely be booted from the CEO chair. Already prominent investors are calling for him to step down. If TSLA falls below $100, they will come for his head.

We have Joe Biden who ran for president in 1988 and famously embellished the fact that he got a scholarship to go to law school and he finished at the top of his class and got awards and all that. re: #217 Dangerman
From what I’m hearing Kushner and Ivanka are on the rocks so they probably don’t have time to invest in another losing campaign.
Southwest Airlines dramatically reduced its flight schedule and has stopped selling tickets for most of the country in the coming days as it tries to restore an operation broken by winter weather and outdated technology.
Dallas-based Southwest is cutting about two-thirds of its flights in the coming days in an attempt to “reset” operations, the company told staff in a message late Monday night, reducing daily flights from about 4,000 to around 1,400 nationwide.
“We’ve had another very tough day today in the operation,” CEO Bob Jordan said in a message to employees. “And there are several more days ahead of us in all likelihood.”
Southwest stopped selling tickets for flights in the coming days to prevent customers from booking travel that will likely be canceled.
“Due to our limited schedule and large number of re-accommodations, inventory available to book flights across our network is very low, but we are still operating flights,” Southwest spokesman Chris Perry said in a statement.
Southwest has canceled more than 8,000 flights since Thursday with thousands more cancellations coming in the next few days as it tries to find a way to get pilots and flight attendants in the right place.

I would guess that it might be the other way round, too: the Kushner “brand” is, and was always, real-estate development: his “in” in the Trump Admin got him a golden payday via his Middle East deal making/peacemaking*: it was Ivanka who had had to rely on “public” perceptions to bolster HER “brand” - tricked-up schlock fashion, but who remembers that now? - the association with Daddy’s shitshow of a Presidency was likely more damaging to her.
*No sarc tags or scare quotes here: like Jared or not, on an objective basis, the “Abraham Accords” - assuming they can hold up - are virtually the only positive foreign-policy achievement of the entire Trump Administration. Flawed, of course, but still, (IMO) a positive.
