The Beautiful Poetry of Donald Trump Hardcover - Illustrated, November 5, 2019
What if there’s a hidden dimension to Donald Trump; a sensitive, poetic side? Driven by this question, Rob Sears began combing Trump’s words for signs of poetry.
What he found was a revelation. By simply taking the 45th President of the United States’ tweets and transcripts, cutting them up and reordering them, Sears unearthed a trove of beautiful verse that was just waiting to be discovered. (emphasis added)

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking too. He’s freaking out - “bigly”, if you will - because he knows it’s coming in the next 48 hours or so.
There was a piece today in the Washington Post about how the evangelicals went from Jimmy Carter (a bedrock decent man, who has devoted his life to helping others in need) to Donald Trump (a selfish spoiled rich brat who has led a life of depravity, debauchery & ugly crime).
The key seems to be that starting in the 70s, the white smalltown evangelicals felt like “America was slipping out of their grasp” and they got freaked out & desperate.

Oops. I was wrong. It was the New York Times: How Evangelical Christians Went From Jimmy Carter to Donald Trump
Rush Limbaugh taught evangelicals to hate, but Clinton was the object of that hate, both Bill and Hillary. And then 9/11 turned George W. Bush into sort of a warrior king for righteousness. And then, I think, all of that sets up the reception to Barack Obama. There’s, like, these three decades, three presidencies of hyperpartisanship, which get increasingly more partisan. I think a lot of these histrionics about Trump are a product of having to double down and triple down about something that’s so obviously indefensible.
Yeah, that’s kinda where I trace the moment when the right wing really started to go off the rails.

Of the 16 examples provided by Florida’s Department of Education of how slavery was purported to have “benefited” Black people, nearly half were people who were likely never enslaved at all, the Tampa Bay Times reports.
The examples were supposed to justify the state’s new policies on teaching about slavery in the United States.
Another good point from Jonathan Last: “Slavery began in Jamestown in 1619 and wasn’t abolished until 1865. So that’s 246 years—a quarter of a millennium—in which generation after generation after generation of slaves wasn’t able to ‘parlay’ their good fortune at having been enslaved into professional advancement later in life.”
Rando 1: “Like we need to waste time debunking the Florida Department of Education. I mean, if you believe Blacks benefited from slavery, you’re pretty much lost already.”
Yikes. Actually pleased to make a bogey.

That’s the “one thing changed history” narrative that historians aren’t so big on.
Moving Evangelical Christians from apolitical to rabid Republicans was a decades-long project.
It involved a lot of lying to Evangelicals by Republican operatives, particularly Ralph Reed.
When Roe v Wade was first handed down, the Evangelical magazine Christianity Today came out with a special edition, featuring Evangelical theologians arguing why the decision was a good one, keeping the government out of private decisions.
Reed had tried in the past to harness the voting power of apolitical Evangelicals with no success. Evangelicals viewed abortion as “a Catholic problem.” The Bible in their view is clear that you don’t have a baby until the baby draws its first breath, and their theology reflected that.
Under President Ford, the Supreme Court handed down its decision against Bob Jones University saying segregated schools could not receive federal tax money. That threatened a whole lot of Evangelical segregation academies.
During the Carter Administration, Reed and other Republican operatives successfully lied and claimed Jimmy Carter’s administration had pushed for this outcome, and used the abortion issue as a way to rally Evangelicals behind Ronald Reagan in 1980, since the Catholic Church had an extensive network and theology opposing abortion and Evangelicals could leverage that to retain their segregation academies.
The Evangelical position became “see, we’re not racists, we’re concerned about abortion.”
After helping deliver the landslide victory (coupled with the Iran Hostage Crisis and the endless media coverage including freakin’ counters for the days) to Ronald Reagan.
On January 8, 1982, Ronald Reagan’s Treasury Department ordered the IRS to ignore the Supreme Court order, arguing that Congress had not given that specific authority to the IRS to suspend Bob Jones’s non-profit status. Reagan’s Justice Department then dropped the case against Bob Jones University, saying the case was moot.
The firestorm rained down on the Reagan Administration from non-wingnuts, forcing Reagan to seek Congressional action (which failed because Republicans), then a Supreme Court decision (which ruled 8-1 that the IRS did have the authority to revoke the not-for-profit status of segregated private schools).
That cemented Evangelicals to the Republican Party, because they saw Ronald Reagan fighting for their religious rights (to engage in segregation).

Bernie Kerik strikes deal with Jack Smith to turn over Trump records
Bernie Kerik, the former NYPD commissioner who collected evidence of supposed election fraud for the Trump campaign in 2020, has cut a deal to turn over records to Department of Justice Special Counsel Jack Smith as part of the investigation into Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
Smith previously sought the documents, which are related to Kerik’s role as the former president’s on-the-ground investigator looking into eventually disproven conspiracy theories about ballot stuffing and fake voters. However, Kerik’s legal team had refused to turn those documents over, citing attorney-client privilege stemming from the fact that Kerik was working on behalf of Trump’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani.
But on Friday, Trump himself waived that privilege and agreed to have the documents turned over, according to Kerik’s defense lawyer, Timothy Parlatore.
Smith is expected to now receive nearly 2,000 pages of material describing how Kerik looked into bogus fraud allegations. The records could prove pivotal for federal prosecutors, who are seeking evidence of Trump’s decision-making process as he relentlessly voiced baseless accusations that the 2020 election was “rigged,” even though top advisers had told him otherwise.
PA city demands Trump cough up thousands owed from 2018 rally before he returns again
The mayor of Erie, Pennsylvania is making an all-out effort to get Donald Trump to pay up tens of thousands of dollars he has refused to cough up for almost five years before the former president returns this weekend for another rally.
With Trump headed to Erie on Saturday as part of his campaign for the 2024 Republican Party presidential nomination, Mayor Joe Schember (D) told the Erie Times-News that pleas for the $35,000 owed have gone unheeded and city administrators are looking at ways to get him to pay before he hits town in less than a week.
According to the report, the $35,000 is for expenses incurred when the city hosted an Oct. 10, 2018, Make America Great Again at Erie Insurance Arena, which went to pay city workers assigned to the event, as well as police officers who worked overtime.
“I think we have to try, and I feel like my team feels the same way,” Schember said. “We’re going to see whether we can get some payment from them in advance this time. It’s important to do this because we’re talking about taxpayer money being used to help make his visit more safe.”
The Pennsylvania city is not alone in feeling ignored by Trump and his people over money owed after hosting rallies.

Seems like a campaign that has taken in hundreds of millions of dollars ought to be able to pay up, unless they were just passing the money along as some sort of laundering scheme.
re: #56 Unabogie
Again, Trump does not care. And he will not care until he faces serious consequences for something.
If the city threatened to cancel the rally or something, that might get his attention, but beyond that, there’s not much they can do except keep sending him bills.

Regarding debates:
Back when my wife was the Libertarian Party Campaign Treasurer for Keith Hamburger (CO-5, Colorado Springs), Mr. Hamburger appeared in a live debate with the Democratic and Republican candidates.
She brought up to me that the debate answers were only to be directed to the moderator. Mr. Hamburger and the Democratic candidate sparred on various issues regarding their respective positions. Any time the Republican candidate was asked, he simply responded “I agree with Mr. Hamburger.” She asked me if I faced such a debate (say, for the Unicameral), how would I respond to that?
I replied, “It would appear that my Republican opponent has no thoughts of his own, and can only agree with mine. Why vote for him then, when you can vote for me and my ideas?”

We used to have it just about right here on the Rhine: a scenic dusting around Christmas, maybe one or two good snowstorms per winter with a blanket of snow, and a few more flurries over the course of the season.
Now it barely snows here, maybe an inch or so and melts by the next day.

Same here. I might complain about the snow and extreme cold here, but our hot summers are very short.

Ummm…what?
Obviously, we’re not forcing anything on anyone, but I fail to see the downside to people buying more efficient appliances.

The more I think about this, the X branding just becomes dumber and dumber.
If you Google “Twitter”, you get all kinds of stuff about Twitter. But if you Google “X”, you get all kinds of stuff about…all kinds of stuff (some of it NSFW). Googling “X Social Media” will generate top results not for the former Bird service, but a marketing in company in Florida that goes by that name. Searching for “X Twitter” gets you mainly news stories about Elmos rebrand.
I could go on, but I think the point is made. Going with just X is an SEO nightmare.
Also, a few non-SFW things that will impact search results for X:
X-Men
X-Factor
X-Games
D-Generation X (pro wrestling)
Project X
The X-Files
Xbox
X-ray
And that just scratches the surface.
In the tropics, I don’t know what the hell MSN is talking about. They say Super Typhoon Mawar is about to hit Guam.
They are recycling a video clip from CNN from May, saying this is new (as of three hours ago).
A monster typhoon is barreling toward a US territory with deadly winds and dangerous storm surge (MSN)
In reality in the Western Pacific, Super Typhoon Doksuri’s Track has been bumped south. The storm is now predicted to slide through the channel between Luzon and Taiwan, brushing both islands but not going ashore. Maximum sustained winds are 130 knots gusting to 160 knots.
That storm is expected to slam into China. JTWC has extended how far inland they expect the storm to reach, downgrading it to a tropical depression by the time it reaches the upper reaches of the Huangpu River (creating a flood risk for the valley and the City of Shanghai).
There are no other storms in the Pacific.
Over in the far North Atlantic, Don is now downgraded to a post-tropical storm. It is no longer in Canada’s area of responsibility. The storm still is maintaining windspeeds of 40 knots, but no longer has central convection. It is expected to be absorbed into a large extra-tropical low moving toward Europe in about twelve hours.
Don is the fifth-longest lasting July tropical cyclone in the North Atlantic.

I don’t like cold weather, but I can dress warmer as needed. There’s a limit to how much cooler a person can dress.

If that happens, Hillary/Joe and the Deep State CIA will be accused of murder. You know none of his followers are going to believe that a fat 73-year-old who lives on McDonalds and KFC could possibly have any health issues.
Any Republican will guarantee that women have permanently lost the right of choice — SCOTUS will become even more unbalanced than it currently is. Minorities will suffer
even more loss of electoral rights. The departure of Trump may give DeSantis the opening he needs for victory in the primary. The age argument against Biden will be far more effective with an opponent in their 60’s or younger. Democrats have to launch campaigns that make it clear that any Republican, not just Trump, will do irreversible damage to our nation.

Again, Trump does not care. And he will not care until he faces serious consequences for something.
If the city threatened to cancel the rally or something, that might get his attention, but beyond that, there’s not much they can do except keep sending him bills.
What if they refused to provide any security or assistance? Or is that akin to canceling the rally? Or would that leave the city open to law suits?

Ainsworth’s comments today: I barely knew him. He had some minor function on my staff but it was insignificant. Look! A squirrel!
Insignificant. After working for the Lt. Gov., he went to work for the state Department of Education. That’s an insignificant job in a GOP-run state.
DOE fired him after he was arrested.
