I hate to say this but most diamonds on the market have laser inscribed numbers on the girdle.

What’s the purpose. ID? Tying them to their source? Certification? Seems like it would be easy enough to polish them off and etch in new numbers. Sounds like its a DeBeers security kabuki dance.
