This is the Republicans’ problem, and why the party as a whole is not long for this world. In order to win a primary in a party that is increasingly centered on Trump, you have to be as hard right as possible. But these hard-right nutjobs are completely unelectable in a general election. The career GOP’ers - who know how the sausage is made, and want to actually win elections and gain power - know this, and are trying as hard as they can to tamp down the influx of pants-on-head crazy. They are losing this war, and badly.
