I’ll never judge someone, either for cutting someone out of their life, or for not doing so when it seems like it would be healthier to do so. There are always extenuating factors, and the decision to cut a family member or close friend off completely is an extremely difficult one. I can mitigate issues with my family with distance; we only see them a few times a year, and my wife and I educate our kids so that they know not to bring up certain topics that will trigger the grandparents’ ire. I have a former friend to whom I could not show such grace; that is why he is now a former friend.
