Is this really the reason, or just the excuse he’s giving why he changed his mind to his constituents and fellow GOPers? I’m not surprised one bit that Russia is persecuting Evangelicals like they’ve been persecuting members of all “non-traditional” religions (including members of Hare Krishna, etc.).

As far as I know, he’s not giving it as an excuse at all. Johnson is stating that he believes the US intelligence and that a Russian victory would be a disaster. I think that’s part of it, too: this guy is a wet behind the ears backbencher who got post-turtled into a leadership role, and went from listening to Fox News and whackjob preachers to getting the most sensitive US intelligence from grim-faced very competent looking people.

But little Mikey is a true believer, and it would have been a lot easier to dismiss it all as the DeEp StAtE except there was his people, the evangelists, telling him that his people were getting hurt.
